Model Overview

The BMW X1 is an entry-level compact luxury SUV from the BMW Group. Since the debut of the first-generation model (E84) in 2009, it has now evolved into its third generation (U11). The first-generation X1 was built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, boasting sharp handling but limited rear legroom; the second-generation model was locally produced in 2012, cementing its lead in China's compact luxury SUV segment; the current third-generation model made its local production debut in 2023. In the domestic market, the BMW X1 is built in long-wheelbase guise by BMW Brilliance. On 26 January 2026, the 2026 BMW X1 was officially launched across 5 variants, priced between RM258,000 and RM338,000. The 2026 line-up receives a standard 5G network upgrade, along with standard equipment such as a leather steering wheel, powered tailgate, and BMW Digital Key, bolstering its market competitiveness under an "added specs with no price hike" strategy. Main rivals include fellow compact premium SUVs such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLB.
Design Language
The 2026 BMW X1 retains the brand's signature design language. The front fascia sports the iconic kidney grille with vertical slats, flanked by smoked headlight clusters integrating projector lenses and angular daytime running lights. The lower bumper adopts a three-section layout, flanked by vertical air curtains on the front fenders and an inverted trapezoidal air intake below. The new model is offered in two styling trims: xLine and M Sport: the xLine package features extensive chrome accents on the front and rear bumpers to accentuate a premium feel; the M Sport package dials back the chrome for cleaner lines; meanwhile, the Shadowline version incorporates more blacked-out trims to enhance its youthful, sporty vibe. Along the sides, it features semi-flush door handles, complemented by roof rails and a shark-fin antenna up top. The rear is fitted with a prominent roof spoiler and smoked tail lamp clusters. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm (1,854 mm on selected variants) in width, and 1,641 mm (1,627 mm on selected variants) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,802 mm. This wheelbase provides a distinct edge in the compact luxury SUV segment, comfortably eclipsing the Audi Q3 (2,680 mm) and Mercedes-Benz GLA (2,729 mm). For 2026, three new trendy exterior colours have been added: Brooklyn Grey, Star Twilight Blue, and Fire Red.
Inside, the 2026 BMW X1 retains the marque's classic layout. The cockpit is dominated by an integrated curved dual-screen setup comprising a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch floating curved display, paired with a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a toggle-style gear selector. A leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel comes standard across the range. For 2026, the previously optional 737 Aluminium dark shadow brushed interior trim is now standard, while selected variants gain the option of Veganza synthetic leather upholstery.
Powertrain & Performance
The 2026 BMW X1 is powered across the range by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. It is available in two states of tune:
sDrive25Li / xDrive25Li (Low Output): Maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) and peak torque of 300 Nm. 0-100 km/h acceleration is achieved in 7.9 seconds for the 2WD variant and 7.7 seconds for the AWD variant.
M35Li (High Output): Maximum output of 246 kW (335 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.6 seconds.
The entire range complies with China VI emission standards. Selected variants feature the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The standardisation of a 5G network across the range serves as the most meaningful update in this annual refresh—a feature that previously cost an additional RM2,500 on the 2025 model.
Chassis & Handling
The BMW X1 features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup (officially described as a five-link setup). The chassis tuning stays true to BMW's dynamic pedigree: the suspension delivers taut body control and ample roll resistance, keeping cornering lean well in check; the steering is direct with no dead zone, and the rear end tracks faithfully. The overall driving feel is closer to a 3 Series than a conventional SUV. Adaptive M Suspension is optionally available on selected variants. In terms of tyres, 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels are offered depending on the trim, wrapped in tyre sizes of 245/45 R19 or 245/40 R20.
Cabin & Equipment
On the smart cabin front, the 2026 BMW X1 is powered by the 9th-generation BMW iDrive operating system. The standard 5G connectivity leverages low latency and high bandwidth to enhance infotainment responsiveness, streamlining online navigation, voice commands, and OTA software update efficiency. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Selected variants are equipped with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
For creature comforts, standard equipment across the range includes: a powered tailgate (with memory height adjustment), front keyless entry, power-adjustable front seats (with driver's side memory), front and rear centre armrests, automatic climate control (with rear air vents), and multi-colour interior ambient lighting. Rear comfort headrests are standard across the board to enhance long-distance comfort. Optional equipment includes: a head-up display (HUD) (RM9,000), heated front seats (RM3,000), and an interior cabin camera (RM2,000). The boot offers a standard cargo capacity of 540 L, expandable via split-folding rear seats.
Safety & Smart Driving
On the safety front, the 2026 BMW X1 comes standard across the board with front airbags, front and rear full-coverage side curtain airbags, and front side airbags. Active safety features include ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), tyre pressure monitoring display, and seatbelt reminders for all seating positions. Front and rear parking sensors are standard across the range; 2WD models get a reverse camera, while AWD models are upgraded to a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
For advanced driver assistance, the 2026 BMW X1 comes standard with a Level 2 driving assistance system. Features include cruise control, automated park assist, Auto Hold, and hill-start assist. Buyers can also opt for the Driving Assistant Professional package (RM27,500 for 2WD / RM18,800 for AWD), which adds high-tier features such as full-speed adaptive cruise control. However, amenities like heated front seats and certain Level 2 ADAS features remain optional paid add-ons.
Market Performance & Review
The BMW X1 continues to deliver solid sales numbers in the Chinese market. Full-year sales in 2025 reached approximately 82,000 units, maintaining strong competitiveness in the luxury compact SUV segment; single-month sales in December 2025 stood at 3,326 units. Thanks to its class-leading rear legroom and an effective entry-level transaction price hovering just above RM200,000, the locally assembled long-wheelbase X1 has successfully captured buyers with budgets between RM200,000 and RM300,000 seeking an entry into a premium marque. Since its launch in 2009, the BMW X1 has evolved through three generations. Amid the industry's EV transition and the rise of domestic Chinese brands, the X1 not only competes with ICE models from traditional luxury brands such as the Mercedes-Benz GLB and Audi Q3, but also faces fierce competition from local new energy SUVs. The 2026 iteration bolsters its value proposition with standard 5G connectivity and an enhanced spec sheet without price increases. As the gateway to BMW's SUV portfolio, the X1 remains a firm favourite among Chinese buyers owing to its generous cabin space, commendable driving dynamics, and strong badge appeal.
