2026-09-23 21:20:01

Model Overview

The Jaecoo J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) is the debut plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) mid-size SUV from Chery's premium sub-brand, Jaecoo. Combining the German word "Jäger" (hunter) with "Cool", the Jaecoo brand is positioned above Chery's mainstream stable with an emphasis on "rugged luxury". Its primary rivals in the global mid-size SUV arena include established nameplates such as the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, BYD Sealion 6, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

The petrol-powered Jaecoo J7 made its global premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024, followed by the progressive rollout of the plug-in hybrid variant—the J7 SHS—in 2025 across markets including Australia, the UK, Malaysia, South Africa, the UAE, and the Philippines. Sharing its platform architecture with the domestic Chery Tansuo 06 C-DM, the export model is badged as the Jaecoo J7 SHS, featuring upgraded cabin materials, dedicated branding, and comfort-biased suspension tuning to differentiate between domestic and international market offerings.

In the UK market, the J7 SHS is priced between £29,195 and £35,165, undercutting the Kia Sportage Hybrid by around £5,000 to rapidly seize PHEV market share. Down Under in Australia, the entry-level SHS Track starts from a drive-away price of around 40 , 990 AUD, with the range-topping S H S S u m m i t at around 40,990 AUD, with the range-topping SHS Summit at around AUD 47,990, alongside a $3,000 cashback incentive during promotional campaigns. In Malaysia, making its regional debut as Southeast Asia's first market, the PHEV is priced at RM158,800 (approx. RMB 245,000).

Powertrain and Hybrid System

Under the bonnet, the Jaecoo J7 SHS pairs Chery Group's fifth-generation 1.5-litre TGDI Miller-cycle petrol engine with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, mated to a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) . The petrol engine puts out 105 kW (approx. 141–147 PS)  and 215 Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces 150 kW (approx. 204 PS)  and 310 Nm. Combined, the hybrid powertrain delivers a potent 255 kW (approx. 347 PS)  and an impressive 525 Nm of peak system torque.

The powertrain operates in both series and parallel hybrid modes, enabling seamless transitions between pure EV, pure petrol, and hybrid drive modes to balance punchy performance with fuel efficiency. The 0–100 km/h century sprint is officially completed in 8.5 seconds—shaving roughly 0.7 seconds off the petrol J7 (approx. 9.2 seconds)—with a top speed of around 180 km/h.

Key powertrain technical specifications are detailed below:

Parameter Specification
Engine Type 1.5L TGDI Turbocharged (Fifth-generation Miller-cycle)
Engine Output 105 kW / 215 Nm
Electric Motor Output 150 kW / 310 Nm
System Combined Output 255 kW / 525 Nm

In terms of battery capacity and efficiency, the J7 SHS is fitted with an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a pure electric range of 90 km on the WLTP cycle and up to 106 km on the NEDC cycle. Total combined cruising range with a full tank and full charge reaches 1,200–1,340 km. Under depleted-battery conditions, NEDC fuel consumption is rated between 4.77 L/100 km and 5.99 L/100 km. For charging, DC fast charging at up to 40 kW juices the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 20–30 minutes, while a 6.6 kW AC charger takes around 3–4 hours for a full 0–100% recharge. The vehicle also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply functionality.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Jaecoo J7 SHS retains the muscular, boxy silhouette of the petrol J7, headlined by the brand's signature vertical waterfall grille and split LED headlamp clusters. Full-width LED daytime running lights (DRLs) up front are matched by "Crystal Array" full-width LED taillights at the rear, exuding a rugged yet sophisticated road presence reminiscent of the Range Rover Evoque. Exterior details include flush pop-out door handles, a two-tone floating roofline, and aero-optimised 19-inch alloy wheels, with selected variants sporting sporty red brake callipers.

In terms of dimensions, the standard J7 measures 4,500 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height, with a 2,672 mm wheelbase. The 2026 Limited Edition introduced for the Russian market extends the length to 4,600 mm and width to 1,898 mm while retaining the same wheelbase, further boosting interior roominess.

The interior showcases a minimalist, tech-driven design featuring soft-touch trims and leatherette upholstery. High-spec and all SHS variants are equipped with a portrait-oriented 14.8-inch floating HD central touchscreen (with core trims utilizing a 13.2-inch or 14.8-inch display) and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to form a dual-screen cockpit. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in GPS navigation, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, with an 8-speaker Sony premium sound system fitted on higher grades. Additional amenities include a wireless charging pad, 64-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Ergonomic leatherette seats offer heating, ventilation, and memory functions for the driver depending on the specific variant.

Chassis and Handling

The Jaecoo J7 SHS adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. Underneath, suspension duties are handled by a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned primarily for urban driving comfort. A ground clearance of around 200 mm ensures sufficient capability across city tarmac and mild unpaved terrain.

Electronic power steering (EPS) is standard across the range, offering light and effortless low-speed manoeuvrability, though motoring media have noted that the steering feel is overly assisted and lacks communicative road feedback. The suspension isolates bumps effectively on smooth tarmac, but can exhibit a slight jittery or "slapping" sensation over rough or coarse road surfaces, accompanied by a marginally firm rear rebound. Unlike the petrol variant which offers an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option, the SHS PHEV range is strictly front-wheel drive. Drivers can switch between three drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—via the central touchscreen.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Jaecoo J7 SHS excels in safety, securing dual five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP crash tests in 2025. Euro NCAP scores were: Adult Occupant Protection at 81% , Child Occupant Protection at 85% , Vulnerable Road Users at 80% , and Safety Assist at 84%. ANCAP crash test results confirmed that the passenger cell remained structurally stable during frontal and side impacts, with protection for the driver's chest and lower legs rated as "Adequate".

Passive safety is comprehensively covered by 8 airbags as standard, comprising dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a front-centre airbag. The body structure utilizes a high-strength cage design with a substantial proportion of high-strength and hot-formed steels applied in critical areas to efficiently disperse crash forces.

On the active safety front, the J7 SHS comes standard with a full Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, including: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (with Stop & Go), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) (covering vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection as well as reversing scenarios), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA, with auto brake), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and Intelligent High Beam Control (IHC). All SHS variants also feature a 540° panoramic camera system (360° surround view + transparent underfloor display), Driver Monitoring System (DMS), and a 6+12 radar and ultrasonic sensor array.

Cabin and Practicality

The cabin of the J7 SHS sets a competitive benchmark in its segment for tech integration and everyday functionality. Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, keyless entry with push-start button, 540° surround view camera, electronic parking brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, and Hill Start Assist. High-spec and flagship trims add extra luxury with heated/ventilated/massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, multi-colour ambient lighting, and an 8-speaker Sony premium audio setup.

In terms of luggage room, boot volume is slightly reduced compared to the petrol J7 due to the underfloor hybrid battery pack. Standard boot space measures between 340 and 412 litres (varying by regional market specification); folding down the 60:40 split rear seats expands cargo volume up to approximately 1,265 litres for larger items. Rear passenger space accommodates three adults comfortably, though legroom for the middle occupant is slightly compromised by a minor central floor tunnel.

Market Performance and Reception

The Jaecoo J7 SHS has generated strong sales momentum across multiple export markets. In the UK, monthly registrations for the J7 lineup (encompassing both the SHS PHEV and SHS-H full hybrid) reached 10,064 units in March 2026, leading the UK SUV segment rankings ahead of established rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage, and Volkswagen Tiguan. In Australia, 2,706 units were delivered in 2025, with market share expanding further in early 2026 behind competitive pricing campaigns. In Malaysia, the locally assembled (CKD) J7 PHEV caters to strong domestic demand while also serving as a regional export hub to Southeast Asian markets like Vietnam.

On the warranty front, Jaecoo provides an 8-year/unlimited-mileage (Australia) or 7-year/150,000 km (selected other markets) factory vehicle warranty, along with an 8-year/160,000 km traction battery warranty (offering 1-to-1 replacement if State of Health drops below 70%). Early-bird buyers in select markets also received an extended 10-year/1,000,000 km warranty covering the engine and high-voltage battery.

Automotive media reviews have broadly praised the J7 SHS for its strong value proposition, outstanding total cruising range, and generous standard equipment. However, road tests have also pointed out several areas for refinement: occasional low-speed transmission hesitation, over-centralised touchscreen controls for routine air conditioning and ADAS adjustments, relatively firm seat cushioning on long highway stints, and moderate wind noise at high speeds.

Heading into mid-2026, Jaecoo is ramping up its global retail and dealer network, with the J7 SHS capturing greater market share across Australia, the UK, and Southeast Asia, serving as an important growth pillar in Chery Group's global expansion roadmap.
