GWM WEY G9

2026-09-28 00:10:00

Model Overview

The WEY G9 is a premium new energy MPV introduced by WEY, the luxury marque under GWM (Great Wall Motor). Positioned as a seven-seater luxury plug-in hybrid MPV, it centres around the core philosophy of "Family, Technology, and Trust". In its nameplate, "G" signifies a cross-generational emotional bond, "9" represents family, and "WEY" pays homage to GWM Chairman Jack Wey (Wei Jianjun)—a moniker reflecting the G9's dedicated positioning for high-end family transport.

Built on GWM's world-first dedicated new energy premium MPV architecture, the G9 is underpinned by the intelligent Hi4 all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid powertrain. In its domestic market, it is known as the WEY Gaoshan. Primarily targeted at Southeast Asian markets including Malaysia and Thailand, its rollout marks the WEY brand's official foray into the ASEAN region while standing as the first Chinese-brand new energy luxury MPV assembled locally in the region.

In Malaysia, the 2026 WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is priced at RM269,800 (approx. RM476,000). The model is locally assembled (CKD) and comes backed by a 6-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, alongside an 8-year or 180,000 km hybrid system warranty covering the high-voltage battery pack, drive motors, and power control unit. In Thailand, the G9 is fully imported (CBU) from Malaysia, with a retail price of THB 2,350,000 (approx. RM517,800).

Design Language

Styling-wise, the WEY G9 mirrors the exterior design language of the China-spec WEY Gaoshan, exuding an imposing and upscale road presence. Up front, a bold, expansive chrome grille integrates seamlessly with the full-LED headlamp clusters to deliver an authoritative, wide-track aesthetic. The side profile is defined by clean contours and dual powered sliding doors, complemented by 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels shod with Michelin e.Primacy tyres (245/50 R18), striking a balance between aesthetics and NVH refinement. The rear is kept sleek with full-width LED taillights that accentuate its visual breadth.

In terms of dimensions, the short-wheelbase G9 measures 5,050 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,900 mm tall, riding on a 3,085 mm wheelbase. This gives it a larger footprint than the Toyota Alphard, providing generous space for its three-row, seven-seat configuration. The Malaysian market also receives a medium-wheelbase variant measuring 5,280 mm in length, bridging the gap between the standard Gaoshan 7 and the extended-wheelbase six-seater Gaoshan 9.

Inside, the cabin adopts a wraparound architecture tailored with a minimalist yet luxurious aesthetic. The Malaysian-spec model features a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster, and a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, though it does away with the front passenger entertainment screen. Generous Nappa leather upholstery is complemented by continuous horizontal air vents and brushed metallic accents, cultivating an undeniably premium ambiance.

Powertrain and Performance

At the heart of the WEY G9 lies GWM's proprietary Hi4 intelligent all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid system, featuring dedicated electric drive setups across both front and rear axles. Depending on the target market and specification, powertrain figures are split between two key setups:

The Malaysian-spec 2026 G9 Hi4 PHEV pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual permanent magnet synchronous electric motors on the front and rear axles. Together, they generate a combined output of 442 hp and 642 Nm of peak torque, allowing the MPV to complete the 0-100 km/h century sprint in just 5.7 seconds on to a top speed of 200 km/h. Power is supplied by a 44.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, delivering up to 170 km of pure electric range on the NEDC cycle and a total combined range exceeding 1,000 km on a full tank and charge. Even in charge-depleted hybrid mode, fuel consumption is rated at an efficient 6.2 L/100 km.

The Thailand-spec model and earlier Malaysian variants feature a slightly different setup, packing a 37.96 kWh battery pack for a CLTC pure electric range of 140 km. This configuration is driven by a 156 hp 1.5T engine, a 177 hp front electric motor, and a 183 hp rear electric motor, delivering a higher combined output of 487 hp and 762 Nm of torque. Across the board, drivers can toggle between three drive modes: EV Mode, EV Priority Mode, and Smart Hybrid Mode.

For charging, the G9 supports up to 60 kW DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in 26 minutes, while 6.6 kW AC charging achieves a 15% to 100% state of charge in 6.5 hours. A 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply function is also included to run outdoor appliances. On the domestic facelifted model, the battery capacity has been upgraded to 51.55 kWh, extending pure electric range to 201 km under the WLTP cycle.

Chassis and Handling

The WEY G9 is engineered on a monocoque chassis. Underneath, it benefits from GWM's iTVC intelligent torque vectoring control system, which dynamically modulates power delivery across both axles and individual wheels in real time based on road conditions, ensuring composed handling over wet roads, through high-speed bends, or while cruising on highways.

When it comes to NVH suppression, significant engineering has been applied to the G9's soundproofing. Through acoustic double-glazed glass, strategic structural dampening, and the HALOSonic active noise cancellation system, in-cabin noise is kept down to just 63.4 dB at a 120 km/h highway cruise, matching the refinement standards of top-tier luxury marques. The chassis setup is explicitly comfort-biased, working in harmony with independent suspension and large, low-rolling-resistance tyres to effectively soak up road imperfections and ensure plush ride quality.

Cabin and Equipment

The WEY G9's cabin is lavishly appointed with comfort and convenience amenities. The 2+2+3 seven-seater layout features premium Nappa leather upholstery throughout. The second row houses individual zero-gravity captain seats with one-touch lie-flat functionality, 10-way massage modes, and seat ventilation, treating occupants to a genuine business-class travel experience. Both the front and second-row seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, and massage functions to minimize fatigue over long journeys. The second-row armrests also incorporate updated physical switches and a dedicated rotary dial for seamless massage adjustments.

On the tech front, the digital cockpit comprises a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen running GWM's Coffee OS 3.0 interface, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Rear-seat entertainment is handled by a 17.3-inch roof-mounted fold-down screen, paired with an audiophile-grade 2,440W, 21-speaker surround sound system. Catering to today's multi-device lifestyle, the cabin is fitted with 11 USB ports alongside a 50W air-cooled wireless smartphone charging pad.

Additional creature comforts include tri-zone automatic climate control, an intelligent air quality management system, 64-colour ambient lighting, a 12.5-litre dual-temperature on-board refrigerator/warmer (0–50°C, capable of running up to 24 hours after engine shut-off), heated/cooled storage bins, a head-up display (HUD), dual powered sliding doors, and dual panoramic sunroofs. A completely flat floor and a wide walk-through aisle ensure effortless third-row access, with the third row specially engineered to comfortably seat full-sized adults over extended road trips.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Passive safety on the WEY G9 is anchored by a high-strength safety cage body structure. 6 airbags are fitted as standard across the range, providing comprehensive wraparound occupant protection.

On the active safety and driver assistance front, the G9 is equipped with a full-fledged Level 2 ADAS suite. Key features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centering Assist (LCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA). A 360-degree surround-view camera system is also standard to assist with parking in tight spots, complemented by standard driver aids such as a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control.

Market Performance and Reception

The global rollout of the WEY G9 commenced in the second half of 2025. In December 2025, the first locally assembled WEY G9 rolled off the production line in Malaysia, marking the first time a Chinese-brand high-end new energy MPV achieved local CKD assembly in the country. The G9 subsequently made its official Malaysian market debut in January 2026, commencing mass exports to other ASEAN markets such as Thailand within the same month. In Thailand, bookings had already been initiated during the Bangkok International Motor Show in November 2025.

In the broader regional landscape, the G9 goes head-to-head with rivals such as the Toyota Alphard, Zeekr 009, XPeng X9, and Denza D9. Thanks to the running-cost benefits of its PHEV architecture, the ample power reserves of the Hi4 AWD setup, and luxury touches like Nappa leather zero-gravity seats, the G9 carves out a distinct competitive edge in this fiercely contested space. Back in China, the donor model, the WEY Gaoshan, recorded solid sales of around 35,000 units in 2025, consistently ranking among the top contenders in the large MPV segment.

Serving as the vanguard for GWM's "Ecological Global Expansion" initiative, the WEY G9 establishes a viable blueprint for Chinese-brand high-end new energy MPVs entering Southeast Asia and international markets via its Malaysia-Thailand dual-hub production and export strategy. The vehicle's seamless integration of luxury appointments, smart connectivity, and PHEV engineering firmly underscores GWM's technological prowess and global ambitions in the premium new energy MPV arena.
