2026-09-19 17:20:01

Model Overview

The ORA 03 is a flagship model from Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) all-electric sub-brand, ORA, originally known in China as the "ORA Good Cat". As a pivotal step in GWM's "One GWM" global strategy, brands under the group, including ORA, standardized to a "Brand + Number" naming convention from 2024 onwards. Here, the ORA 03 designation reflects its vehicle segment size, designed to strengthen its global presence with a cleaner, unified brand identity.

Positioned as a pure electric compact hatchback, the ORA 03 embraces a retro-futuristic design aesthetic tailored for urban trendsetters and young families. Serving as the vanguard of GWM’s international expansion, the EV has gone on sale across more than 20 countries worldwide, including the UK, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. In international markets, the model has successfully carved out a distinctive niche in the fiercely contested global EV landscape, courtesy of its generous standard equipment, stellar safety credentials, and stand-out styling.

Design Language

The design ethos of the ORA 03 centres around "Retro-Futurism", penned by former Porsche designer Emanuel Derta. On the outside, it incorporates unmistakable retro cues: rounded "frog-eye" full-LED headlamps, a clamshell bonnet, and a sweeping fastback silhouette, paired seamlessly with contemporary touches like flush door handles to strike a neat balance between vintage charm and modern flair. The cabin echoes this interplay: a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel harmonises with retro chrome piano-key toggles, while a dual-screen setup comprising a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen injects a high-tech ambience. Material quality is upscale, featuring soft-touch plastics, premium stitching, and faux-suede upholstery on higher-spec variants to deliver an upmarket feel that punches above its segment. In terms of dimensions, depending on the market and trim, it measures approximately 4,235–4,254 mm in length, 1,825–1,848 mm in width, and 1,596–1,632 mm in height, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. This delivers impressive interior packaging for its class, accommodating four 180 cm adults in comfort.

Powertrain and Performance

Across global markets, the ORA 03 is predominantly offered in two powertrain and battery configurations. The entry-level variant is powered by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 105 kW (approx. 143 PS) and 210 Nm of torque. The higher-output variant bumps outputs up to 126 kW (approx. 169 PS) and 250 Nm. Depending on the range specification, it is fitted with a 45.9 kWh, 63 kWh, or 57.78 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. In terms of driving range, rated figures span from 310 km to 501 km under NEDC or WLTP test cycles, catering to diverse commuting needs. DC fast charging can juice the battery from 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in around 30 minutes. Tuned primarily for urban duty, the power delivery is linear and progressive, making it effortless for everyday driving.

Chassis and Handling

Built on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) architecture, the ORA 03 rides on a familiar suspension setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam, typical for cars in this segment. The chassis is tuned predominantly for ride comfort, offering a supple and compliant drive over urban tarmac. The electric power steering (EPS) is light, making city commutes and tight parking manoeuvres effortless. Drivers can toggle between multiple drive modes—including Standard, Eco, and Sport—to adjust throttle response and regenerative braking levels. That said, some international reviews have noted that while the overall ride is pliant, the steering feels somewhat devoid of road feedback, and the boot capacity is on the tighter side compared to segment rivals, slightly compromising everyday practicality.

Cabin and Features

The cabin is one of the ORA 03's standout highlights, seamlessly blending digital tech with comfort. Dominating the dashboard is a dual-screen cockpit housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, powered by GWM's proprietary operating system with voice control, connected navigation, and media streaming. On the creature comforts front, top-spec variants feature a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A heated steering wheel, Qi wireless smartphone charger, and a CN95 air purification system further elevate in-cabin comfort and air quality. Notably, the EV also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging, allowing users to power external electrical appliances on outdoor trips. While standard boot space is modest, the 60:40 split-folding rear seats allow luggage capacity to be expanded when needed.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is a cornerstone of the ORA 03, garnering international acclaim with a prestigious 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. On the passive safety front, six airbags come standard across the range—comprising dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags—offering comprehensive occupant protection. In terms of active safety, the ORA 03 boasts Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities via an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The suite bundles Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent Cruise Assist (ICA), and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) for stop-and-go cruising. Lane management includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) to prevent accidental lane drift. Furthermore, the 360-degree surround-view camera can be augmented with a transparent chassis display to create a 540-degree field of view, effectively eliminating blind spots during tricky manoeuvres and tight parking.

Market Performance and Reception

The ORA 03 stands as a spearhead for GWM's global electrification roadmap. In January 2024, it became the first locally assembled battery electric vehicle (BEV) to roll off the line at GWM's Rayong plant in Thailand, marking a major milestone for the regional automotive industry. Since 2023, wearing the ORA 03 moniker, it has expanded into key global markets including South Africa, Brazil, and Chile, quickly gaining traction thanks to its quirky styling and strong value proposition. In the UK, with an entry price starting from around £32,000, it undercuts established segment rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3. Serving as a crucial catalyst in GWM’s international repositioning, the ORA 03 has inaugurated an exciting new global chapter under a streamlined alphanumeric naming strategy.
