ORA

2026-08-09 09:40:01

Brand Overview

Ora is a new energy vehicle brand under Great Wall Motor, officially established on August 20, 2018, as the first independent new energy brand among mainstream Chinese automakers. The name "ORA" is derived from the famous mathematician Leonhard Euler and reflects the brand philosophy of "Open, Reliable, and Non‑traditional." In its early years, Ora focused on the pure electric micro‑car segment, and in 2021, it adopted the differentiated positioning of "The New Energy Car That Loves Women More." Since its founding, Ora has accumulated roughly 600,000 global users, with operations spanning more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.

Development History

Following its official brand launch in August 2018, Ora introduced its first model, the iQ, later that year. It was followed by the R1 (later renamed the Black Cat) and, in 2020, the White Cat.

The year 2021 marked a turning point for Ora. In January, monthly sales surpassed 10,000 units for the first time, reaching 10,260 units. That year, the brand clearly positioned itself as "the car brand that loves women more," embracing differentiated competition. New models such as the Ballet Cat and Flash Cat pushed the brand's price point upward into the 100,000‑to‑200,000‑yuan segment and beyond. In 2022 and 2023, Ora's annual sales held steady at around 100,000 units, hitting the brand's historical peak.

But from 2024 onward, Ora began to face serious market headwinds. Intense competition and slower product renewal took a toll: wholesale sales fell sharply to 63,300 units in 2024, a 41.69% year‑on‑year drop. The decline continued into 2025, with annual sales slipping further to 48,300 units—down another 23.68%. In response, Great Wall Motor made a leadership change in June 2025, appointing Lu Wenbin—who had previously led the Haval brand to strong results—as General Manager of the Ora brand.

Core Technologies

Ora's core technology has evolved from a pure‑electric‑only approach to full powertrain compatibility, anchored by Great Wall Motor's self‑developed "Guiyuan Platform."

Guiyuan Platform is the technical backbone of Ora's new strategic direction. It breaks the vehicle down into 49 core modules and 329 shared components, compatible with a range of powertrains—including pure electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), gasoline (ICE), and plug‑in hybrid (PHEV). With its high level of modularity, the platform achieves a parts commonality rate of over 70%, helping to cut both R&D and material costs.

All‑New Hi2 Intelligent Hybrid System is the key powertrain enabled by the Guiyuan Platform. It combines a 1.5T hybrid‑specific engine, a highly integrated intelligent drive module, and a high‑power battery pack. The system features the industry‑first P3 motor disengagement mechanism, enabling intelligent switching across "three engines, six modes" at all speeds. The Ora 5 Hybrid, equipped with this system, completed a 3,004 km real‑world test across China's four municipalities, achieving a combined fuel consumption of 3.74 L/100 km and earning a Guinness World Record in its category.

In addition, the Ora 5 gasoline version comes with Great Wall's 6th‑generation 1.5T engine and 3rd‑generation dual‑clutch transmission, while the pure electric version offers a maximum CLTC range of 580 km, with OTA updates and "spot‑to‑spot" continuous intelligent driving capabilities.

Brand Positioning and Strategic Adjustment

The year 2026 marked a turning point in Ora's strategic direction. On March 15, the brand held a global launch event in Bangkok, Thailand, officially moving beyond its long‑standing positioning as "The New Energy Car That Loves Women More" to a fully upgraded identity: a "Global Fashion Premium Car Brand" for young urban consumers worldwide.

On the technology front, Ora also shifted from a pure‑electric‑only track to a "Full Power" approach, covering pure electric, hybrid, gasoline, and plug‑in hybrid powertrains. The goal is to offer users in different markets the most suitable power option based on their local energy infrastructure and driving habits.

Brand Portfolio

Ora is in the middle of a full product and brand overhaul. Its lineup now falls into two main categories: the Cat Series Family and the all‑new Ora 5 Family.

Cat Series is Ora's legacy product line, including the retro‑styled Ballet Cat, the pure electric coupe Flash Cat, and the design‑led Good Cat—all focused on the pure electric market.

Ora 5 is the brand's new strategic series, built for global markets and designed to support Ora's move into multiple powertrains. The first pure electric Ora 5 SUV launched in December 2025, and at the April 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the gasoline and hybrid versions went on sale, with the Sport model also making its debut. The Ora 5 is the brand's first model to offer three powertrain options—pure electric, hybrid, and gasoline—while staying true to the "Experience Equity" philosophy, meaning all versions deliver the same level of intelligence, comfort, and design. Going forward, Ora plans to expand the Ora 5 Family with more derivatives, including sedans and station wagons, all built on the Guiyuan Platform.

Market Performance

Ora's market performance remained under pressure through 2024 and 2025, with sales falling to their lowest point in recent years. Within the Great Wall Motor Group—which posted overall year‑on‑year growth and broke one million units—Ora was the only business segment to continue its decline.

As the brand underwent a full strategic overhaul and product lineup transition, Ora's sales from late 2025 to early 2026 showed sharp fluctuations. In December 2025, deliveries of the Ora 5 pure electric version pushed monthly sales to 8,134 units. But as 2026 began, the two‑month transition period between old and new models caused sales to plunge, with just 3,320 units cumulatively sold in the first two months. While the launch of the new Ora 5 at the Beijing Auto Show generated a notable spike in market attention, whether it can truly reverse the brand's long‑term slide remains to be seen.

Global Footprint

As the global auto market shifts toward diverse energy needs, Ora has made globalization a core pillar of its future strategy. The first step: choosing Thailand—ASEAN's automotive production and export hub—as the launchpad for its global brand refresh.

On the technology front, the multi‑powertrain flexibility enabled by the Guiyuan Platform allows Ora to offer tailored solutions—pure electric, hybrid, gasoline, and more—for different countries and regions, matching local user needs. On the product front, the Ora 5 Family serves as the centerpiece of its global push, with plans to expand into Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and beyond. On the investment front, to back Thailand's role as a regional strategic hub, Great Wall Motor has announced an additional 10 billion Thai baht (roughly 2 billion RMB) in funding, targeting 40% sales growth in the local market by 2026.

Future Outlook

As Ora marks its eighth year, the brand is going through its biggest transformation yet. Its positioning has shifted from "Loves Women More" to a broader "Global Fashion Premium" identity, while its technology strategy has moved beyond pure electric to a full‑powertrain platform. This signals Ora's transition from a local EV brand to a globally focused, full‑spectrum carmaker.

With the Guiyuan Platform and a growing lineup of multi‑powertrain models, Ora is working to carve out a strong, defensible position in the new car market—backed by Great Wall Motor's high hopes in the new energy space.
