Model Overview

The Foton Grand General EV is an all-electric pick-up truck under BAIC Foton Motor, serving as the new energy commercial branch of the Foton Grand General series. The model first made its market debut in 2022; in 2025, Foton introduced the Grand General EV Pioneer Edition, officially going on sale from RM119,800. Available variants offer multiple CLTC-rated electric range options of 405 km, 505 km, 520 km, and 535 km, alongside 2WD and 4WD configurations, as well as standard wheelbase and long wheelbase options, with an official recommended retail price range of RM119,800 to RM368,800. Positioned as a "super pure electric large pick-up", the Grand General EV centres on commercial productivity and business utility, catering to sectors such as agriculture, forestry, livestock, fisheries, construction, and urban logistics, as well as commercial fleet operators prioritising low running costs.
Design Language
On the exterior, the Foton Grand General EV retains the bold, rugged styling of the petrol Grand General series while incorporating distinctive new energy design cues. The front fascia features a fully enclosed grille integrating the brand badge, highlighted by full-width blue trim accents across the top and bottom to signify its EV powertrain. Clean-cut front headlamp clusters on either side connect seamlessly with the grille, visually widening the front end. Along the sides, sharp character lines, prominent wheel arches, and lower side steps deliver a tough, muscular presence. The rear styling mirrors the petrol version, equipped with vertically oriented tail lamp clusters, a sturdy rear bumper protector, and an 'EV' badge on the tailgate. In terms of dimensions, the standard wheelbase (SWB) variant measures 5,340 × 1,940 × 1,870 mm (L × W × H) with a 3,110 mm wheelbase; the long wheelbase (LWB) variant measures 5,630 mm long, 1,940 mm wide, and 1,870 mm tall. The 1,940 mm wide body and 1.58-metre wide cargo bed provide class-leading load-carrying capability.
Inside, the cabin of the Grand General EV adopts a functional and utilitarian layout. The dashboard features leatherette upholstery across the upper section and durable hard plastics below. Higher-spec variants are equipped with a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, while retaining a full array of conventional physical buttons and dials beneath the display for intuitive operation.
Powertrain & Performance
The Grand General EV is driven by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, delivering a maximum output of 130 kW (approx. 177 PS) and a peak torque of 330 Nm. The drivetrain is paired with a single-speed EV reduction gearbox. For energy storage, it offers two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack capacities of 63 kWh and 88 kWh, with cells supplied by CATL. Driving range under CLTC test cycles spans from 405 km to 535 km. For charging, it supports both AC slow charging and DC fast charging, taking approximately 0.6 hours for a 20% to 80% DC fast charge. In terms of energy efficiency, electricity costs remain below 0.5 yuan per kWh, translating to running costs as low as 0.05 yuan per kilometre.
Chassis & Handling
The Grand General EV is built on a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis featuring two longitudinal side rails and nine crossmembers to prevent frame distortion under heavy loads. The front suspension uses an independent double wishbone setup, while the rear utilizes a robust leaf spring rigid axle. Drivetrain options include rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD). Steering is managed via an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. Braking is handled by disc brakes on all four wheels, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). It is fitted with 265 mm wide tyres. Minimum ground clearance stands at 230 mm unladen and 200 mm fully laden. Selectable driving modes include Standard/Comfort, Eco, and Sport.
Cabin & Equipment
In terms of cabin equipment, the Grand General EV comes standard with a reverse camera and cruise control. The infotainment system supports Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone screen mirroring, and 4G telematics. High-spec variants offer an optional 10.25-inch central screen. For interior comfort, synthetic leather or fabric seats, remote keyless entry, and an electronic gear selector are standard across the range. Cargo bed dimensions for the LWB variant are 1,805 × 1,580 × 440 mm, while the SWB cargo bed measures 1,520 × 1,580 × 440 mm. The maximum rated payload reaches up to 950 kg, with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,495 kg. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with a 25 kW + 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power export function, supplying on-site power for drone operations, road maintenance, fishery aeration, and other commercial applications.
Safety & Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the Grand General EV is fitted with active safety features including ESP, four-wheel disc brakes, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The battery pack, electric motor, and electronic control units are rated to IP67 dust and water resistance standards, with maximum protection reaching IP68. The reinforced frame structure provides exceptional structural rigidity. For driver assistance, cruise control and a reverse camera come standard on all variants, with high-spec trims offering an optional 360-degree surround-view camera. Foton Pick-up also provides a lifetime warranty on the core electric powertrain components.
Market Performance & Verdict
Following its market debut, the Grand General EV became one of the most accessible ladder-frame pure electric pick-up trucks on the market, backed by its competitive starting price of RM119,800. In November 2025, the Grand General EV Pioneer Edition was officially launched in South China, quickly securing bulk fleet procurement orders from heavy industries including mining. Owner feedback has widely praised its rugged exterior, solid powertrain performance, generous cabin space, and the exceptionally low operating costs of its electric platform. However, some automotive reviews have pointed out that the cabin retains a rather utilitarian design with extensive use of hard plastics, which feels somewhat basic for top-spec variants priced above RM400,000. Overall, leveraging its key strengths of an all-electric powertrain, robust ladder-frame chassis, wide cargo bed, and high-capacity V2L power export, the Foton Grand General EV offers strong commercial appeal in the new energy pick-up segment thanks to its value-driven pricing and ultra-low running costs.
