Development History

Entrepreneurship and Rapid Growth (1996–2000)

On August 28, 1996, Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. was established by one hundred corporate entities. In its early years, the company entered the market through agricultural vehicles and light-duty trucks. In March 1998, it obtained complete vehicle manufacturing qualifications and was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in June of the same year. Within only four years of its establishment, Foton became China’s best-selling light-duty truck brand, completing the historic “three major milestones in four years” of incorporation, public listing, and market leadership.

Full Commercial Vehicle Expansion and Initial Globalization (2001–2009)

Foton Motor expanded into a full range of commercial vehicle segments and was awarded the title of “China’s No. 1 Commercial Vehicle Brand.” In 2003, the Beijing Auman Commercial Vehicle Base was completed in Huairou District. In 2004, the company’s one-millionth vehicle, an AUV bus, rolled off the production line. In 2008, Foton established Foton Cummins as a joint venture with Cummins, initiating the localization of its core powertrain capabilities. In 2009, the company’s commercial vehicle sales rose to the forefront of the global market, marking another major stage of development.

Comprehensive Development and Deepened Joint-Venture Cooperation (2010–2020)

In 2010, Foton introduced a new corporate brand identity. In 2012, it established Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. in partnership with Daimler, bringing Mercedes-Benz heavy-truck technology platforms into its product portfolio. In 2015, Foton Thailand Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was established. In 2017, the company formed a joint venture with Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen AG to develop high-end automatic transmission technologies. In 2021, Foton officially produced its 10 millionth vehicle, achieving the milestone within just 25 years of its founding and setting an important benchmark in China’s commercial vehicle industry.

Strategic Transformation and High-Quality Development (2021–Present)

In 2023, Foton unveiled a new logo and launched its “Making the Movement of Everything Freer” brand strategy. In May 2025, the company announced its “World-Class Advancement Strategy,” accelerating its transformation into a world-class commercial vehicle manufacturer through three core pillars: comprehensive globalization, comprehensive new-energy transformation, and comprehensive intelligence. In December of the same year, Foton introduced a range of strategic products, including the Auman Galaxy Hybrid Heavy Truck, the KAVAN BEACON hydrogen-electric dual-route heavy truck, the AUV Intelligent Bus, and the Qimingxing battery-electric light truck. In 2026, Foton celebrated its 30th anniversary, appointed Lu Zhenghua as General Manager, and established Guangzhou Yuanfu Automotive Supply Chain Co., Ltd. in a joint venture with COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers to build an independently controlled global maritime supply chain system.

The company operates 19 R&D centers worldwide, including five domestic application development centers, three intelligent connectivity centers, eight overseas R&D centers, and three joint-venture technology centers. Its testing and validation capabilities are among the leading levels in China.

In terms of technology routes and core platforms, Foton adheres to a three-pronged strategy encompassing battery-electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel-cell technologies, achieving complete in-house development coverage across all technology pathways. Its next-generation core technology platforms include the Qimingxing platform, the world’s first dedicated battery-electric light truck platform. Developed over three years with investment exceeding RMB 1.7 billion, it utilizes 800V silicon-carbide dual motors and vector-control technology, delivering industry-leading energy-efficiency optimization. The KAVAN BEACON heavy-truck platform is based on the world’s first purpose-developed heavy-truck architecture capable of supporting both battery-electric and hydrogen-electric powertrains, integrating complete vehicle, electronic/electrical, and chassis architectures.
