Automotive motor suppliers refer to companies that supply drive motors (traction motors), micro-motors, and related system solutions to carmakers. The drive motor serves as the "heart" of a new energy vehicle (NEV), directly dictating acceleration performance, energy efficiency, and driving range. Spurred by the electrification wave, motor suppliers are transitioning from conventional standalone motor manufacturing towards integrated, high-voltage, and flat-wire (hairpin) electric drive systems.
Motor suppliers can be categorised by product type and supply tier.
By product type, they primarily comprise drive motor assembly suppliers (providing traction motors as the core component of electric drive systems, such as UAES and Founder Motor), micro-motor suppliers (supplying auxiliary body motors such as seat, windscreen wiper, and power window motors, such as Shenghuabo and Hengshuai), and motor component suppliers (supplying core parts like stators and rotors, such as Xinzhi Group).
By supply tier, they are classified into system-level suppliers (Tier 1) (supplying complete drive motors or integrated e-axle assemblies directly to OEMs, backed by system integration and software calibration capabilities, such as UAES and FinDreams Powertrain) and component-level suppliers (Tier 2/Tier 3) (supplying core components like stators, rotors, and electrical steel sheets to Tier 1 suppliers, such as Xinzhi Group, Founder Motor [selected operations], and Baosteel [electrical steel raw materials]).
United Automotive Electronic Systems (UAES) is a market leader in China's drive motor segment. Established in 1995 as a joint venture between Zhonglian Automotive Electronics and Germany's Bosch, the company began expanding into NEV drive motors in 2010. UAES currently operates three manufacturing bases, five plants, and 14 production lines, churning out millions of motors annually for domestic marques, joint ventures, and new EV startups. In collaboration with Baosteel via a joint laboratory, its co-developed F-Super Motor hits a maximum rotational speed of 31,000 rpm, setting a new industry benchmark.
Zhejiang Founder Motor is the foremost independent third-party drive motor supplier in China. By the end of 2025, the company had delivered over 4 million NEV drive motors across nearly 50 vehicle models. Its client portfolio spans major local and global carmakers, including SAIC-GM-Wuling, SAIC Motor, Geely Auto, Chery Auto, HYCET, XPT, XPeng, Li Auto, Leapmotor, and Volkswagen. Founder Motor prioritises R&D breakthroughs in cutting-edge domains such as 800V high-voltage motors, hairpin/flat-wire motors, oil-cooled motors, and high-voltage 3-in-1 integrated electric drive units.
FinDreams Powertrain, a powertrain subsidiary under BYD, specialises in NEV drive motor assemblies and bespoke auxiliary motor products. Providing comprehensive powertrain solutions across battery electric (BEV), hybrid (PHEV/HEV), and internal combustion engine (ICE) applications, it primarily caters to BYD and its joint venture partners (such as Toyota).
Zhuhai Enpower boasts over 20 years of experience in NEV powertrains and power supply systems. Its core product lineup includes drive motors, motor controllers (inverters), and integrated powertrains, serving established marques such as Changan Auto, GAC Trumpchi, Great Wall Motor, Dongfeng Nissan, and XPeng.
Other prominent players include: Jing-Jin Electric (JJE) (serving FCA, XPeng P7, FAW Hongqi, etc.), Shanghai Electric Drive (supplying FAW, Chery, Changan, SAIC, etc.), Hefei JEE Power (BAIC BJEV, JAC, Chery, etc.), and Inovance Technology (Geely, WM Motor, Volvo, etc.), collectively completing China's comprehensive drive motor supply chain ecosystem.
In the auxiliary body motor segment, Zhejiang Shenghuabo stands as the market benchmark. According to QYResearch data, its windscreen wiper assembly sales ranked first in China for six consecutive years from 2020 to 2025, while its seat motor sales led the global market for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025. Its client base covers major Chinese OEMs like Geely, SAIC, Great Wall Motor, BYD, GAC, and Changan, whilst also indirectly supplying global marques such as GM, Ford, Volkswagen, and Toyota via Tier 1 seating giants including Forvia, Lear, and Magna.
Hengshuai Co., Ltd. specialises in automotive motor and fluid technologies, with a portfolio comprising micromotors, washer pumps, cleaning systems, and thermal management modules, supplying both OEMs and global Tier 1 component manufacturers.
Jiangsu Leili covers NEV motors and sub-components, producing LiDAR motors, Head-Up Display (HUD) motors, electric air-conditioning compressor motor assemblies, and electronic water pumps.
Xinzhi Group specialises in the production of electric motor stators and rotors. In October 2024, its cumulative output of NEV stator and rotor assemblies crossed the 1-million-unit mark. The company's Chongqing plant, designed for an annual capacity of 3 million sets, is now fully operational, supplying high-voltage, oil-cooled stator and rotor assemblies to over ten NEV manufacturers.
On the raw material front, upstream supplier Baosteel provides non-oriented electrical steel (silicon steel) to motor manufacturers like UAES. Its ultra-thin gauge electrical steel directly determines the ceiling for drive motor energy efficiency and power density.
The automotive electric motor sector is undergoing profound structural changes. System integration is the core development path, evolving from standalone units to "3-in-1" (motor + inverter + reducer) and multi-in-one e-axle assemblies, where system integration capability defines a supplier's competitive edge. The shift towards high-voltage architectures is prominent, with the rapid rollout of 800V platforms demanding higher dielectric strength and superior insulation. Meanwhile, offering superior slot fill factor and power density, hairpin flat-wire motors are progressively supplanting conventional round-wire designs as the industry standard.
Simultaneously, the supplier-client dynamic has shifted from relying on traditional joint venture brands to forming strategic alliances with Chinese domestic marques and new-age EV startups. As a result, top local suppliers now possess the engineering prowess to go toe-to-toe with established global Tier 1 giants.
