Magna International Inc. is a leading global automotive parts supplier and mobility technology company. Unlike traditional automakers that produce their own branded vehicles, Magna focuses on providing parts, systems, and complete vehicle engineering solutions to almost all major car manufacturers worldwide. This unique position has earned it the reputation as the “Hidden Champion” and “Contract Manufacturing Emperor” of the automotive industry. Its business scope covers the entire value chain of automotive manufacturing, ranging from powertrains that determine vehicle performance and advanced driver assistance systems that ensure safety, to ultra-luxury interior seats and complete vehicle contract manufacturing.

Magna’s brand strength does not rely on the sales of its own branded vehicles but is reflected in its vast technical landscape. As the third-largest automotive parts supplier in the world, it reported sales of $42.8 billion in 2024. The company collaborates with major automakers such as Volkswagen and General Motors to develop software platforms. Headquartered in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, Magna operates 338 manufacturing plants in 28 countries, along with 106 product development, engineering, and sales centers. It employs approximately 164,000 people globally, and its stock is publicly traded on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

Guided by its mission, “Mobility for Everyone,” Magna is not committed to producing its own branded vehicles. Instead, it leverages its expertise in complete vehicle engineering and manufacturing to become an indispensable partner for both traditional automakers and new energy vehicle brands in their global expansion.

History

Magna’s development history is legendary, serving as a microcosm of the close intertwining between an entrepreneur’s personal struggle and the transformation of the global automotive industry.

From Mold Workshop to Business Empire (1957–1990s)
In 1957, Austrian immigrant Frank Stronach founded a small mold workshop named Multimatic (the precursor to Magna) in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, with only $200. Relying on persistent technological innovation, this small workshop gradually evolved into an automotive parts supplier that integrated parts production and mold manufacturing.

Acquisition and Integration (1998–2001)
At the turn of the century, Magna completed its most crucial strategic layout in history. In 1998, it acquired the Austrian automaker Steyr-Daimler-Puch, a company with profound engineering heritage dating back to 1904 (or 1864) and known as the joint developer and manufacturer of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV. In 2001, Magna officially renamed it Magna Steyr, establishing it as its flagship division for complete vehicle engineering and contract manufacturing, thereby laying the foundation for its future glory.

Globalization (2000s–2010s)
After acquiring Steyr, Magna quickly expanded its global contract manufacturing footprint, producing several best-selling models for brands such as BMW and Chrysler. Simultaneously, the breadth and depth of its business continued to expand, integrating into seven core business units and forming comprehensive software and hardware capabilities covering body, chassis, powertrain, and more. After 2010, the strategic focus shifted toward new energy vehicles. In 2018, Magna established a joint venture with BAIC, introducing a high-end intelligent manufacturing system to position itself in the Chinese new energy market.

Market Performance

Magna's market performance is stable and strong. According to the 2025 financial report, Magna's annual sales were approximately $42 billion, and net profit attributable to parents was $829 million.

Based on cash flow and strategic investment needs, Magna estimates capital expenditure for 2025 to be approximately $2.1 billion to $2.3 billion, and plans to repurchase approximately $1 billion in stock during the same period. Its complete vehicle contract manufacturing business is one of its largest growth engines, and the cooperation list covers almost all top automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Technology and Innovation

Magna’s core technologies cover all aspects from micro hardware to macro complete vehicle engineering, mainly focusing on the following three areas:

New Energy Powertrain Technology
Magna has launched its eDrive (Electric Drive System) portfolio, covering pure electric and hybrid solutions, along with the Etelligent series of sub-brands. For instance, the eDS Duo is a drive system that integrates dual motors with a two-speed transmission, enabling the “G-Turn” off-center turning function for the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Additionally, the EtelligentTerrain system ensures that electric off-road vehicles maintain strong passability across various complex road conditions.

Complete Vehicle Engineering and Intelligent Manufacturing
A core asset of the company is the “Magna Factory Concept” (MAFACT), a world-class manufacturing system that integrates lean production, quality management, and innovative vitality. Leveraging powerful engineering service capabilities, Magna provides customers with complete solutions ranging from concept design to complete vehicle mass production.

Smart Cockpit and Body Systems
This area includes a “Flexible Seating System” capable of realizing more than ten different scene configurations, next-generation 800V high-voltage eDrive electric drive systems, and the CLEARVIEW™ advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which integrates cameras, millimeter-wave radars, and LiDAR.

Global Presence

Magna’s global layout is a core component of its competitiveness.

Europe
The Graz plant in Austria serves as the headquarters for Magna’s complete vehicle contract manufacturing and engineering services. It will continue to provide contract manufacturing for traditional giants like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, while increasingly focusing on undertaking production for new automotive brands from China.

North America
As the birthplace of the group, North America remains one of its core markets, contributing 48.6% of total revenue in 2025. States like Michigan are hubs for its R&D centers and technical talent, continuously leading the development of frontier technologies such as autonomous driving and electrification.

Asia
Magna entered China in 1996 and, by 2025, had established 62 factories with approximately 27,000 employees. Among these, the Zhenjiang factory, established in joint venture with BAIC, is an important link in its global manufacturing system.

In addition, Magna is becoming a strategic springboard for brands such as XPeng and GAC to enter the European market through its contract manufacturing services.

Future Outlook

Looking forward, Magna’s strategic goals are clear: “Mobility for Everyone.” Its future development will revolve around three core pillars:

Deepen Electrification Transformation
Magna will continue to increase R&D investment in pure electric and hybrid technologies, including the next-generation DHD REX extended-range hybrid drive system.

Accelerate China Market Layout
Its joint venture Zhenjiang factory will continue to expand. While continuing to contract manufacture for BAIC Arcfox, it will also open its advanced manufacturing capabilities to other brands.

Become a “Bridge” to Globalization
Magna will play a key “bridge” role between global clients and emerging markets. By utilizing its production network distributed worldwide, it aims to help traditional automakers adapt to challenges in the new energy era and assist Chinese brands in winning a place in global competition.

Magna is not only a behind-the-scenes giant in the automotive industry but also a model of the philosophy of open cooperation in global manufacturing. Today, as the automotive industry faces changes unseen in a century, it is evolving from a simple “contract manufacturing plant” to a core driver leading future mobility, leveraging its strong technical strength and win-win business philosophy.
