The BAW 212 now represents the flagship product line under Beijing Automobile Works' (BAW) dedicated off-road marque "212", tracing its lineage back to the iconic BJ212 military off-roader introduced in 1965. BAW operates as an entirely separate corporate entity from BAIC Group and Beijing Off-road. Backed by Weiqiao Pioneering Group, the 212 brand underwent a comprehensive revamp in 2024, rolling out the all-new T01 series built on a fresh dedicated platform. Positioned as a rugged, ladder-frame 4x4 that honours classic heritage with modern engineering, the series takes aim at the RM200,000-class segment against rivals like the Tank 300. The 2026 T01 series carries an official starting price of RM149,900, while the rugged T01 Changfeng Diesel Edition starts from RM198,800.
The 2026 T01 retains the signature "one arch, two rounds, three slats" design DNA, highlighted by its retro and muscular lines. Meanwhile, the brand continues to push its styling envelope, having unveiled the "212 X" based on the "Expedition" platform at Auto China 2026, incorporating contemporary touches such as a clamshell bonnet and distinctively shaped headlamps. 212 has also introduced the short-wheelbase three-door T10 variant with a removable roof, further amplifying its pure, hardcore lifestyle appeal.
Modernised powertrains form the core of the 212's transformation. The 2026 T01 comes standard across the range with a newly tuned 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 185 kW and 410 Nm of torque. The diesel variant is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit generating a peak torque of 415 Nm from just 1,500 rpm, serving up formidable low-end pulling power for technical off-roading. A ZF 8-speed automatic transmission comes standard across all variants, providing a refined balance of smooth gear shifts, proven durability, and fuel efficiency. Additionally, an 80-litre large-capacity fuel tank is fitted as standard to support long-distance overland touring.
A body-on-frame (ladder-frame) chassis with front and rear solid axles (five-link coil spring suspension setup) comes standard across the range—a hallmark of pure, uncompromised off-roaders. The BorgWarner part-time 4WD system offers 4L (low-range with a 2.64:1 torque reduction ratio), 4H (high-range 4WD), and 2H (rear-wheel drive) modes. A rear axle differential lock comes standard, with an optional front differential lock to deliver a three-lock setup, complemented by Crawl Control and Tank Turn functions. Terrain capability figures are impressive, featuring a 40° approach angle, a 36° departure angle, and a water wading depth of up to 850 mm, well ahead of conventional monocoque SUVs.
Beneath its rugged exterior, cabin refinement on the 2026 T01 has been substantially elevated. Thorough NVH improvements have been applied, incorporating high-damping bushings to effectively suppress road and wind noise. Equipment highlights include a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a floating central touchscreen with smartphone connectivity and voice command. Higher-spec variants add leather upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and rear air-con vents, achieving an ideal balance between utilitarian function and daily comfort.
In terms of safety, the body utilizes a high-strength steel safety cage structure to enhance crash protection, with front driver and passenger airbags fitted as standard across all variants. Higher variants come equipped with a 360-degree surround-view camera system to help drivers eliminate blind spots. Standard safety kit also includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The integrated Bosch ESP system further ensures optimal vehicle stability over wet and slippery surfaces.
Since its brand rejuvenation, the 212 has gained steady market traction, maintaining monthly sales between 1,000 and 2,000 units to carve out a solid niche in the hardcore off-road segment. In terms of user feedback, the diesel variant has earned high praise from seasoned off-roaders for its muscular low-end torque and long-range expedition capability. Viewed as a direct competitor to the Tank 300 and BJ40, the 212 T01 presents a compelling value proposition within its RM100,000 to RM200,000 price bracket. Operating under its new standalone brand identity, BAW 212 has carved out an appealing path that blends heritage appeal with genuine capability via its authentic ladder-frame chassis and modern 2.0T powertrain in China's competitive 4x4 arena.
