The AION Y Plus is a fully electric C-segment SUV by GAC AION New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. Serving as the upgraded successor to the original AION Y (first launched in April 2021), it made its official market debut on 27 September 2022. Built on GAC's dedicated AEP 2.0 EV platform, the vehicle is one of the brand's primary volume drivers, heavily emphasising "versatile cabin space" and "exceptional value for money".
As of June 2026, the latest 2025 AION Y Plus was rolled out in June 2025, offering four variant trims: 430 Smart Edition, 510 Smart Edition, 510 Smart Luxury Edition, and 610 Smart Edition, with official on-the-road prices ranging from RM99,800 to RM123,800. Notably, both the 510 Smart Edition and 610 Smart Edition have seen substantial price reductions over their predecessors, with the 610km range variant seeing a price slash of up to RM22,000.
Centred around a "compact footprint, massive interior" design philosophy, the AION Y Plus delivers strong product differentiation in its class through clever packaging, dependable Magazine Battery technology, and aggressive pricing, standing out as a benchmark offering in the sub-RM100k EV SUV segment.
The AION Y Plus retains the signature design cues of the AION Y family, sporting a trendy and youthful aesthetic. The front fascia features a clean, closed-off grille flanked by distinctive "Angel Wings" LED headlights with an intricate dot-matrix lighting signature that ensures high night-time visibility. Down below, the bumper houses a trapezoidal air intake that lends added depth and character to the front profile.
Along the sides, clean and flowing character lines pair with a wheels-to-the-corners stance that maximises cabin room whilst projecting a planted, athletic posture. It comes equipped with flush pop-out door handles (powered on higher variants) and five-spoke aerodynamic alloy wheels that enhance its sporty appeal. Dimensionally, the EV measures 4,535 mm long, 1,870 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, riding on a 2,750 mm wheelbase — an increase of 125 mm in overall length compared to the standard AION Y. At the rear, it features a full-width smoked LED light bar with an illuminated central emblem that delivers a striking, high-tech night signature. Buyers can choose from up to 13 exterior paint finishes, catering extensively to individual tastes.
Inside, the cabin takes on a sleek, minimalist theme with horizontal lines dominating the dashboard layout. It features a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel and an electronic steering column-mounted gear selector (stalk shifter), doing away with the rotary gear dial found in older iterations. Fresh interior colour schemes like "Zero Anxiety Green" are also offered, striking a balance between modern technology and sportiness.
The entire AION Y Plus range features a front-mounted single electric motor driving the front wheels (FWD), driven by a 7-in-1 integrated electric drive unit across two output tunes. The standard output variant produces 100 kW (approx. 136 PS) and 176 Nm of torque, whereas the higher output tune pushes out 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) and 225 Nm. Both versions complete the 0–100 km/h sprint in roughly 9.8 seconds, with a capped top speed of 150 km/h.
On the battery front, all variants utilise GAC AION's next-generation Magazine Battery using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Three pack capacities are available: 49.75 kWh, 58.4/58.9 kWh, and 68.2 kWh, translating to CLTC-rated ranges of 430 km, 510 km, and 610 km respectively. The updated Magazine Battery successfully passes strict nail penetration tests without catching fire, ensuring class-leading thermal stability.
For charging, DC fast charging is supported up to 90 kW, taking around 24 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC). Standard AC charging at 6.6 kW takes around 9.5 hours for a full 0–100% charge. Aside from the base variant, an energy-saving heat pump air-conditioning system is standard across the board to curb winter power loss. From the 510 Smart Edition onwards, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power supply functionality is included, enabling external electrical appliances to be powered during outdoor trips or emergencies.
Underpinnings comprise a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear torsion beam semi-independent setup, paired with ventilated front disc brakes, solid rear disc brakes, and an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold. The steering system relies on an Electric Power Steering (EPS) rack tuned for a light, effortless feel in town. It rides on 215/55 R17 tyres as standard, with optional 18-inch and 19-inch alloys available. The EV has a kerb weight of roughly 1,720 kg, a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 2,180 kg, a minimum ground clearance of 150 mm, and a compact turning radius of 5.5 m.
Out on the road, the suspension is clearly tuned for pliant everyday comfort, soaking up minor road ruts and humps effortlessly in urban commutes. Steering response is direct and linear with minimal play on centre; however, body roll is noticeable through quick directional changes owing to the rear torsion beam architecture and elevated centre of gravity. Drive modes include Eco, Normal, Sport, and Individual, catering to varied driving scenarios.
In the tech department, the AION Y Plus comes standard with a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, running on the ADiGO SPACE intelligent operating system backed by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6125 processor. The system supports Carlink and HUAWEI HiCar 4.0 smartphone mirroring, built-in satellite navigation (Amap with live traffic light countdown timers), a dual-zone AI voice assistant, and Over-the-Air (OTA) software update support. The refreshed user interface delivers slick and responsive operation.
The cabin seats five, finished in either fabric or premium synthetic leather upholstery. The 510 Smart Luxury Edition uniquely benefits from a power-adjustable, ventilated, and heated driver's seat, whereas other grades make do with manual adjustments. The standout highlight remains its remarkable packaging: the front seatbacks can fold completely flat to form a 1.8-metre double bed, while laying both rows flat opens up a massive 5 m² lounge area. Rear passenger doors open to nearly 90 degrees, making child seat installation and loading awkward items exceptionally easy. Boot capacity starts at 405 litres and expands to 1,200 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats laid down.
Other creature comforts include single-zone automatic climate control with rear air vents, a 6-speaker audio setup, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing automatic wipers, a wireless charging pad, keyless entry with push-start button, and functional roof rails.
Passive safety is anchored by a high-strength safety cage structure, dual front airbags, and front side airbags; however, front-to-rear curtain airbags are omitted. Standard across the range are Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat anchor points, and front seatbelt pre-tensioners with reminders.
Active safety kit includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Auto Brake Hold, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera. Driver assistance features vary significantly by variant: base trims only get basic passive cruise control; the 510 Smart Luxury Edition steps up with the GAC GSD ADAS suite delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, incorporating Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and a 540-degree panoramic parking monitor with transparent underfloor view. Crucially, the 610 Smart Edition lacks Level 2 driver aids, offering just passive cruise control like the 510 Smart Edition. In contrast, the dedicated 510 and 610 Smart Driving Editions introduced in 2024 (priced from RM145,800) come comprehensively equipped with the full ADiGO PILOT 3.0 L2 suite.
The AION Y Plus remains a crucial sales anchor for GAC AION. By June 2025, cumulative sales of the wider AION Y family (including the original AION Y and Y Plus) breached 520,000 units. In April 2025 alone, the AION Y Plus registered 7,364 units, taking 8th spot overall in the competitive Chinese NEV compact SUV segment. By Q1 2026, it held second place in the two-box hatch/crossover sales chart with 36,000 units delivered. Nevertheless, broader brand volumes have contracted: GAC AION delivered 290,000 units overall in 2025 (down 22.62% year-on-year), with the AION Y's annual volume halving from 156,000 to 78,000 units.
Industry commentators note that a significant proportion of the AION Y Plus's volume originates from the commercial B2B fleet sector, where its ubiquity in the e-hailing and ride-hailing space has earned it the nickname "King of E-Hailing". In an effort to shed this commercial image and capture more private retail buyers, AION revealed the all-new AION N60 in early 2026 — an upscale, heavily re-engineered successor boasting standard roof-mounted LiDAR, zero-gravity massage seats, advanced ADAS, a punchier 165 kW motor, up to 630 km of range, and a larger footprint. For now, the 2025 AION Y Plus continues to sell side-by-side with the incoming N60 in a dual-tier model strategy.
In terms of competition, the AION Y Plus goes toe-to-toe with electric crossovers like the BYD Yuan PLUS, Geely Galaxy E5, and GAC Toyota Bozhi 3X, standing out primarily on rear cabin space and aggressive price points, while trailing slightly behind rivals in onboard compute power and driver assistance standardisation. Owner reviews consistently praise its cavernous rear legroom (exceeding two fist-lengths on a totally flat floor), modular seating versatility, and proven battery safety. Conversely, common user gripes centre on the firmer rear torsion beam ride, missing ADAS features on select popular trims, and the brand's heavy e-hailing fleet association amongst private car buyers.
