Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival cross-boundary travel tips and traffic arrangements

The Transport Department said on 22 September that passenger and vehicle flows at Hong Kong's land boundary control points are expected to increase significantly during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday from 25 to 27 September.

The busiest period is expected to be afternoon and evening on 27 September, when more people will return to Hong Kong. Waiting times for cross-boundary public transport services may also be longer.

People planning to travel across the boundary are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time and avoid peak periods where possible.

More cross-boundary services

Public transport operators will add services during the holiday period.

From 25 to 27 September, MTR will increase services on the East Rail Line between Admiralty and Lo Wu/Lok Ma Chau at different times to meet demand.

The Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link will also add services from 23 to 27 September. More long-distance sleeper trains will run between Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and Beijing West Station, while additional trains will operate between Hong Kong West Kowloon, Futian and Shenzhen North.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Shuttle Bus (Gold Bus) and Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang Shuttle Bus (Huang Bus) will also run more frequently. During the busiest periods, the two services can run at average intervals of around one minute and two minutes.

Additional quotas will also be made available for cross-boundary coach services. Local franchised B routes serving the various land boundary control points will also operate at frequencies above normal weekend levels.

Zhuhai Port traffic could be heavy

The Transport Department has also warned that Zhuhai Port and surrounding roads are expected to be particularly busy during the holiday peak.

Traffic conditions have become more challenging since the temporary construction bridge linking the Zhuhai Port artificial island with Qinglv South Road was taken out of service.

People travelling between Hong Kong and Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge are therefore advised to use public transport where possible, plan ahead and allow extra time.

Drivers of cross-boundary private cars should also expect possible delays. Lok Ma Chau Control Point and Shenzhen Bay Port may introduce special traffic arrangements depending on conditions on the ground, and private cars may face longer queues during peak periods.

Those taking cross-boundary coaches should book their tickets in advance and follow the instructions from police officers and transport operator staff while waiting.

The HKeMobility app and website provide live traffic snapshots at the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Real-time vehicle clearance information at Zhuhai Port is also available through the official WeChat account for the port.

The Security Bureau's one-stop platform Easy Boundary also provides the latest information on land boundary control points, including Golden Bus, Huang Bus and MTR services and waiting times.

The Transport Department's Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will operate 24 hours a day, monitoring traffic and public transport conditions across Hong Kong, at boundary control points and major railway stations. It will coordinate measures as needed in response to changes in traffic and passenger flows.
