Hong Kong traffic updates: 7 transport hotlines and tips for the school rush on 1 September

The Transport Department has warned of heavier traffic today (1 September) as the new school term begins, and advised students and parents to allow extra time for their journeys. Drivers are also encouraged to avoid school areas where possible.

For parents dropping off or picking up children

Roads around schools are typically busiest during the first two weeks of the new term, especially from 7:30am to 8:30am. Leaving 15 to 20 minutes earlier can help avoid the worst of the morning rush.

For students travelling to school on their own

Take some time to get used to your route and the public transport services you will be using. New students may want to make a trial trip before the first day.

If you are taking a ferry, check the service and journey time beforehand. When crossing the road, please always use a designated crossing and keep your phone and headphones away.

For drivers

The Transport Department recommends using public transport instead of driving into school areas. It should make the journey easier while helping to keep traffic moving.

Transport Department preparations

Major public transport operators, including MTR, franchised bus companies, ferry operators and taxi companies, have been asked to provide sufficient services for the start of the new term. Extra departures and standby staff will be arranged if needed. Bus services serving cross-border students and special routes around school areas will also resume.

The Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will operate under its highest-level joint command arrangement on the morning of 1 September. It will work with the police and major transport operators to keep a close watch on traffic and public transport services, with staff stationed at major interchanges, stations, school areas, land boundary control points and tunnels.

Additional services or traffic management measures will be introduced if conditions require them.
