At first glance, the B30e's muscular, upright silhouette immediately grabs your attention. Staying true to BAIC's off-road pedigree cultivated since 1958, its crisp shoulder lines and chiselled geometric surfaces give off a purposeful, heavy-duty road presence.

Scratch-Resistant Body Armour: Durable, scratch-resistant cladding lines the flanks, drastically cutting down the risk of paintwork scuffs when negotiating tight Hong Kong parking bays or navigating narrow hillside trails on weekend getaways.

German Engineering Input: "Magic Core" 1.5T 2-Speed DHT Hybrid System

The powertrain is the star attraction of this test drive. BAIC Group (the largest single shareholder in Mercedes-Benz Group) joined forces with Aachen-based German powertrain specialists META to co-develop and calibrate this 1.5L Turbocharged "Magic Core" Hybrid System. 2-Speed DHT Gearbox: This ultra-compact, dedicated hybrid transmission boasts up to 97% drivetrain efficiency, shifting seamlessly between direct engine drive and parallel hybrid modes to eliminate the hunting and shift shock typical of conventional multi-ratio gearboxes. Overtaking on Tuen Mun Road or pulling uphill towards Tai Lam Tunnel, throttle response is instantaneous. Upshifts and downshifts feel snappy and decisive without a trace of sluggishness; the drivetrain calibration is buttery smooth and never feels bogged down. The system features 6 driving and energy states: Pure Electric, Series, Direct Engine Drive, Parallel, Regenerative Braking, and Stationary Power Generation. In cross-harbour crawl or stop-start traffic, it defaults to pure electric or series mode, mimicking the hush and linear response of a full BEV; with a combined WLTC fuel economy of only 6.45 L/100km, it makes immense financial sense under Hong Kong's steep petrol prices and heavy vehicle running costs.

Although primarily intended for urban commutes and light trail excursions, the B30e's off-road geometry and electric 4WD response are genuinely capable hardware.

E-4WD & ATS All-Terrain System: Dispensing with a mechanical prop shaft, the electric four-wheel-drive system reacts in a lightning-quick 0.03 seconds, shuffling torque between the front and rear axles dynamically from 100:0 down to 0:100. Tailored with four ATS settings—Sand, Mud, Wading, and Snow, the system smartly modulates throttle input and electronic brake slip control (Brake LSD), pulling the car out of sticky situations or loose surfaces with minimal fuss. Over broken tarmac or loose gravel, the suspension compliance irons out ruts effortlessly without feeling unsettled; just steady throttle pressure is all it takes to crawl across challenging surfaces without stress.
