Design Language
The exterior styling of the smart #5 was crafted by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, staying true to the brand's design ethos of "Love, Pure, Unexpected". The body features an iconic "Boxy silhouette"—an upright, squared-off profile with sculpted lines that balance playful character and sophistication. The front fascia boasts cyber light-and-shadow full-width matrix LED headlights, paired with segmented light strips and a rugged lower bumper that exudes a muscular stance; the rear is fitted with ultra-red 3D floating LED tail lamps housing 196 ultra-red LED light units. The vehicle also delivers an excellent drag coefficient. Subtle design highlights include the letter "a" in the rear badge doubling as a physical boot release button, wiper arms concealing capsule-shaped cutouts, and an illuminated logo on the D-pillar. In 2025, the smart #5 bagged the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in Germany, completing a "triple crown honour" for the smart brand. Exterior colour choices include Star Vortex Blue, Slate Grey, Particle White, Quicksand Gold, Cyber Silver, and more.
Inside, the cabin embraces a sleek, modern, and upscale design, blending cutting-edge technology with high-grade materials. Soft-touch materials cover up to 85%–90% of the interior, lining virtually every surface occupants can reach. The centre console and door panels are accented with genuine Italian Alpine oak wood trim. The cabin is further equipped with a 256-colour "S-Class level" luxury ambient lighting system that syncs with music beats and driving modes. A panoramic glass roof and frameless doors further elevate the vehicle's premium appeal.
Powertrain & Performance
The smart #5 is available with two powertrain options: all-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV):
All-Electric Version offers two drivetrain configurations: single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD. The standard dual-motor AWD variant delivers a maximum output of 432 kW and 643 Nm of peak torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds; the range-topping BRABUS Edition pushes out 475 kW and 710 Nm, hitting 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. For CLTC driving range, 670 km and 660 km options are available; maximum range extends up to 740 km. The Ultra-Long Range Luxury AWD variant is equipped with a large 100 kWh battery pack.
Plug-in Hybrid Version (EHD Super Hybrid) is powered by Geely's Thor EM 2.0 system, featuring a dedicated 1.5T hybrid engine (boasting 47.26% thermal efficiency) paired with a 3-speed DHT dedicated hybrid transmission. The system delivers a total combined output of 320 kW. It achieves a CLTC pure electric range of up to 252 km and an overall combined driving range of 1,615 km; fuel consumption in depleted battery state is rated at just 4.4 L/100 km. It supports RON 92 petrol.
For charging, the entire line-up is built on an 800V high-voltage architecture supporting 4C ultra-fast DC charging, enabling a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in as little as 15 minutes; the EHD hybrid version completes a 10%-80% fast charge in under 20 minutes.
Chassis & Handling
Underneath, the chassis employs a high-spec suspension setup consisting of front double wishbones and a rear five-link independent suspension. The entire range comes standard with "smart Magic Carpet" air suspension and Continuous Damping Control (CCD) shock absorbers. The air suspension provides ±95 mm of ride height adjustability, achieving a maximum ground clearance of 231 mm; wading depth is rated at 500 mm. In terms of drive layout, the BEV version is offered in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD); the EHD version utilizes a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup. The vehicle features five dedicated off-road driving modes: Sand, Snow, Mud, Rock, and Adaptive; with a maximum climb gradient capability of 45 degrees. The steering is precise and communicative, backed by a chassis tuned to be "supple yet firm", seamlessly blending handling agility with ride comfort.
Cabin & On-Board Tech
The cockpit is powered by an AMD V2000 desktop-grade high-computing chip paired with a console-grade Unreal Engine rendering engine. It features a 5-screen interactive digital cockpit: a 10.3-inch full-colour ultra-HD digital instrument cluster, dual 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K infotainment and front passenger dual displays (utilising Tandem dual-layer OLED technology), and a 25.6-inch AR Head-Up Display (AR-HUD). The infotainment system is integrated with the Doubao AI large language model voice assistant, supporting natural conversational dialogue and multi-screen content sharing. Other tech highlights include wireless Apple CarPlay, four-zone voice recognition, and facial recognition.
In terms of comfort amenities, the front row is fitted with zero-gravity seats offering a 121° zero-pressure recline angle and integrated calf leg rests; complete with seat heating, ventilation, and an 8-point pneumatic SPA-grade massage function. The rear seats feature power backrest adjustment and heating. Audio is handled by a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature sound system arranged in a 7.1.4 surround layout with Dolby Atmos support. Boot capacity stands at 625–630 litres in standard configuration, expanding to 1,525–1,530 litres with the rear seats folded; the cabin also provides 32 dedicated storage compartments.
Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the smart #5 earned a 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP 2025 crash tests, achieving the highest overall score among all large SUVs tested that year; it was also awarded Euro NCAP's "Safest Large SUV" accolade for 2025. Individual category scores include: Child Occupant Protection 93%, Safety Assist 92%, Vulnerable Road Users 84%, and Adult Occupant Protection 88%. The body structure is constructed from a steel-aluminium hybrid with 82% high-strength materials, forming an ultra-rigid safety passenger cell. Seven airbags come standard across the entire range.
For intelligent driving, the vehicle is equipped with the smart Pilot Assist ADAS suite. Top-spec variants feature 33 perception hardware units (including LiDAR) powered by dual NVIDIA DRIVE Orin X computing chips. The system supports mapless Urban and Highway Navigation Smart Pilot (NSP) assist. Level 2 ADAS functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, and a 360° surround-view camera are fitted as standard across all variants.
Market Performance & Outlook
The smart #5 has drawn substantial attention since its unveiling, with the BEV version garnering 4,527 firm orders within 72 hours of its launch. However, as the brand's largest vehicle to date, its sales volume has fallen short of targets—recording full-year sales of only 3,670 units in 2025, well below the targeted 8,000 units per month; latest monthly deliveries stood at 1,842 units, bringing total 2025 cumulative volume to 5,512 units. The brand as a whole faces headwinds—smart's total annual sales in China for 2024 reached 33,427 units, reflecting a 19.37% year-on-year decline. To navigate shifting market dynamics, smart introduced the EHD Super Hybrid variant in 2025 with promotional introductory prices starting from RM169,900. Internationally, the smart #5 was crowned Family Electric SUV of the Year for 2026 by the UK's "What Car?" magazine. In this segment, key rivals include mid-size electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y and NIO ES6. Serving as smart's maiden entry into the premium mid-size SUV fray, the smart #5 carves out a distinct "new-premium" niche in a fiercely competitive market, backed by its Boxy silhouette, Mercedes-Benz design pedigree, 800V high-voltage architecture, and comprehensive intelligent safety suite.
