NVIDIA DRIVE Orin

NVIDIA DRIVE Orin is a high-performance, automotive-grade system-on-chip (SoC) unveiled by NVIDIA in 2019 and officially entering mass production in 2022. Serving as the "central computer" for intelligent vehicles, Orin delivers core computing power for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as well as Level 2+ to Level 5 autonomous driving, making it one of the most prominent production-ready chips in the industry.

Core Performance and Technical Architecture

The DRIVE Orin SoC integrates up to 17 billion transistors on a 7nm process, delivering a computing capacity of up to 254 TOPS (254 trillion operations per second) on a single chip. With a power draw of around 50W, it strikes an optimal balance between processing capability and energy efficiency.

Built on a heterogeneous computing architecture, the chip mainly comprises the following core units:

  • CPU: 12 ARM Hercules (Cortex-A78AE) cores, paired with an ARM Cortex-R52 functional safety island

  • GPU: Integrated NVIDIA Ampere architecture GPU featuring 2,048 CUDA cores and 64 Tensor Cores

  • Dedicated Accelerators: Deep Learning Accelerator (DLA) and Programmable Vision Accelerator (PVA)

  • Memory: Supports up to 64GB LPDDR5 with bandwidth reaching 204.8 GB/s

Orin complies with the ISO 26262 ASIL-D functional safety rating, the highest safety standard currently available for automotive chips. Its DRIVE OS platform has also earned ASIL-D certification from TÜV SÜD.

Product Lineup and Scalability

Orin is offered in multiple performance variants to cater to diverse application needs:

Variant Computing Power Market Positioning
Orin N 84 TOPS Entry-level ADAS / Level 2
Orin X 254 TOPS Mainstay for advanced autonomous driving

Leveraging NVLink-C2C chip interconnect technology, Orin can be configured into a "superchip"—delivering 508 TOPS in a dual-chip setup and exceeding 1,000 TOPS in a quad-chip setup to meet high-compute demands such as Level 4 Robotaxis.

Mass Production Applications and Market Presence

DRIVE Orin is currently one of the most widely deployed high-compute platforms among automotive-grade chips globally, adopted by mainstream EV start-ups and legacy carmakers alike. Typical deployment configurations include:

  • Single Chip: Models such as the GAC Toyota Bozhi 3X and Hyper HL

  • Dual Chips (508 TOPS): Li Auto L9 / L-Series AD Max, XPeng G9 / P7+, the entire Zeekr range, among others

  • Quad Chips (Over 1,000 TOPS): Standard across the entire NIO lineup, Pony.ai 7th-generation Robotaxi, etc.

As of 2026, Orin remains a staple solution in China's premium intelligent vehicle market priced above RM400,000. In parallel, the industry is transitioning towards the higher-compute next-generation DRIVE Thor (1,000 TOPS) platform, which entered series production in 2024, with several new-generation vehicle models already adopting the new architecture.
