e⁴ Platform Technology

2026-10-29 18:50:00

The e⁴ Platform (Yi Si Fang) is the Chinese automotive industry's first mass-produced quad-motor independent drive native powertrain architecture, officially unveiled in 2023 by Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD. Centred on a distributed electric drive layout, this technology moves away from traditional automotive engineering reliant on mechanical driveshafts and differentials. By employing four electric motors to independently govern each wheel, it delivers millisecond-level precision in regulating vehicle dynamic posture under all driving conditions.

Core Operating Principles and Technical Features

The core of the e⁴ Platform is built upon "quad-motor independent drive, distributed vector control, and a highly integrated electric drive architecture":

Quad-motor independent distributed control: The system equips each of the vehicle's four wheels—front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right—with an independent drive motor. Managed by the central computing power and high-speed communication of the vehicle domain controller, the system delivers millisecond-level commands for torque, rotational speed, and reverse rotation to all four motors. This enables virtually limitless permutations of forward drive, reverse rotation, independent wheel braking, or full-torque output across the vehicle.

Safety redundancy in extreme conditions and emergency recovery: With mechanical linkages eliminated, the system can instantly redistribute torque across diagonal wheels in critical situations—such as a sudden tyre blowout on one side, brake failure, or severely slippery road surfaces—ensuring the vehicle maintains its intended path and preventing loss of control. Furthermore, this architecture equips the vehicle with exceptional off-road recovery capabilities, enabling features such as "tank turn" (on-the-spot spin), "crab walk mode", and emergency flotation navigation propelled by independent wheel rotation during deep-water wading.

Global Market Application and Evolution

The e⁴ Platform has been widely deployed across BYD's ultra-premium brand line-up, including the Yangwang U8, Yangwang U7, and Yangwang U9, spanning hardcore off-roaders, flagship luxury saloons, and high-performance supercars. It represents a defining milestone in Chinese automakers' pursuit of core technological breakthroughs within the high-end NEV segment.

As distributed electric drive systems mature and vehicle electrical and electronic (E/E) architectures advance, the e⁴ Platform continues to evolve towards higher power density, lower energy consumption, and seamless integration with intelligent driving systems across diverse scenarios. It not only redefines the physical performance limits of new energy vehicles, but also establishes a solid engineering base for the future adoption of fully redundant drive-by-wire chassis systems.

Operational Guidelines and Industry Limitations

Drivers must never engage advanced specialised functions such as "tank turn" or "emergency flotation mode" in non-enclosed areas, unsafe waterways, or on hard paved roads without fully understanding the operating prerequisites. A tank turn requires specific surface traction characteristics; deploying it on low-friction surfaces may result in unintended trajectory deviation.

Strict adherence to service guidelines is mandatory for the quad-motor system, particularly regarding high-voltage wiring harnesses, wheel-end reduction gears, and multi-motor software calibration. Because the system endures sustained high-torque independent output, any single motor sensor fault or wheel-end seal failure must be diagnosed and recalibrated exclusively with official manufacturer diagnostic equipment. Unauthorised remapping or modification of the underlying drive control software is strictly prohibited.
