Yangwang U9

2026-10-03 08:20:00

The Yangwang U9 is the debut fully electric supercar launched under BYD's luxury flagship sub-brand, Yangwang, competing in the high-performance series-production electric supercar segment. Integrating a comprehensive suite of BYD's cutting-edge new energy vehicle (NEV) technologies, the model is engineered to redefine the performance and dynamic handling limits of series-production electric powertrains. Following the rollout of the limited-run 2026 Xtreme variant, the Yangwang U9 has established itself as an iconic series-production benchmark in the global supercar arena.

Model Overview

The Yangwang U9 serves not only as the brand's halo model, but also stands as the pinnacle of BYD's vertical technology integration capabilities.

Market Positioning: High-performance fully electric supercar, aimed primarily at elite global supercar collectors and driving purists.

Key Highlights: e⁴ technology platform, DiSus-X intelligent fully active body control system, and Nürburgring Nordschleife series-production EV lap record holder.

Key USPs: Delivers bespoke torque vectoring control via a quad-motor independent drive layout, offers exceptional handling stability and dynamic poise courtesy of the active suspension system, and maintains uncompromising reliability under extreme high-speed conditions.

Development History

Debut and Preview: In 2023, the Yangwang brand officially debuted and revealed the U9 prototype, capturing global attention with its distinctive "Time Gate" design language and quad-motor architecture.

Performance Breakthrough: In October 2025, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme officially clocked a 6:59.157 lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife leaderboard, setting a new lap record for production EVs at the time. In November of the same year, the car went on to shatter production car lap records across four premier race circuits in Zhuzhou, Zhuhai, Chengdu, and Shanghai.

Production and Limited Run: In April 2026 at Auto China Beijing, the production-spec Yangwang U9 Xtreme was officially unveiled with a global allocation limited to just 30 units. Carrying a price tag surpassing RM20,000,000, it marked the model's definitive entry into the hypercar upper echelon.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: The Yangwang U9 benchmarks directly against world-class electric hypercars such as the Rimac Nevera. In an intensely competitive segment, it has successfully penetrated the elite hypercar circle on the strength of its bespoke handling characteristics enabled by the "e⁴" and "DiSus-X" systems.

Industry Reception: Bolstered by its benchmark run at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the U9 is hailed as a watershed milestone for the Chinese automotive industry in the high-performance electric propulsion arena. It not only demonstrates BYD's engineering prowess across core EV powertrains, but also elevates the brand prestige of Chinese carmakers in the halo supercar segment.

Core Technologies

e⁴ Platform: Serving as the powertrain cornerstone of the Yangwang U9, this quad-motor independent drive architecture enables real-time torque distribution to each wheel. This not only maximises traction off the line, but also unlocks capabilities such as "tank turns" and agile lateral manoeuvres. The four motors deliver a combined output of 960 kW (1,306 hp) and peak torque of 1,680 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h century sprint in just 2.36 seconds.

DiSus-X System: Standing as an industry-leading intelligent fully active body control system, DiSus-X employs high-power electric actuators to deliver active ride height adjustment and vehicle posture control in real time. It effectively counters body roll during cornering, squat under acceleration, and dive under heavy braking, while enabling unique dynamic capabilities such as vehicle "dancing" in complex conditions.

Super Body Structure: Built around an integrated carbon-fibre monocoque cockpit, the construction achieves superior torsional rigidity while keeping weight in check, offering uncompromising structural safety and chassis integrity under punishing track conditions.

Future Plans

As of 2026, the ongoing strategic roadmap for the Yangwang U9 focuses on the following key areas:

Track-Derived Telemetry & Development: Continually logging real-world telemetry from premier circuits worldwide to fine-tune power delivery calibration and suspension control algorithms, feeding vital data back into BYD's next-generation high-performance EV development.

Global Bespoke Deliveries: Executing deliveries and establishing an exclusive aftersales ecosystem for global limited-run clients, safeguarding Yangwang's ultra-luxury prestige and brand equity.

Technology Cascade & Spin-offs: Translating learnings in extreme thermal management and high-stress electric powertrain control into production features across other premium sub-models, further solidifying the technological moat established by "e⁴" and "DiSus" in the high-end NEV market.
