Model Overview

The Frontlander is an entry-level compact SUV under GAC Toyota, built on the TNGA-C platform. First introduced in early 2022, it quickly established itself as a core sales pillar for GAC Toyota courtesy of its well-rounded product package. On 23 September 2025, the 2026 Frontlander was officially launched as a mid-lifecycle facelift, rolling out in 9 variants comprising four 2.0L petrol and five 2.0L hybrid models, with official retail prices ranging from RM132,800 to RM172,800, and a promotional refreshed price starting from RM102,800. The 2026 model brings comprehensive upgrades across exterior styling, interior refinement, intelligent cockpit tech, safety kit, and powertrain, going up against key rivals such as the Dongfeng Nissan Qashqai and FAW Toyota Corolla Cross.
Design Language
The 2026 Frontlander receives a substantial exterior redesign, featuring a horizontally stretched front fascia that moves away from the previous large grille setup in favour of an EV-style closed-off front face, with the Toyota emblem repositioned to the leading edge of the bonnet. Smoked matrix LED headlamps flank the front and blend seamlessly into the fascia. Along the sides, it retains its rugged appeal with prominent wheel arches and black lower cladding while introducing a floating roof design; the rear gets a newly styled full-width red LED light bar, significantly boosting nighttime visual signature.
In terms of dimensions, the new SUV measures 4,490 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,625 mm tall, riding on a 2,640 mm wheelbase—representing a 5 mm increase in both length and height over its predecessor. A new "Titanium Star Grey" exterior colour joins the palette alongside monotone shades such as Platinum Pearl White, Ink Crystal Black, Crystal Silver, and Desert Gold, as well as dual-tone options including Platinum Pearl White + Black and Desert Gold + Black.
Inside, the 2026 Frontlander benefits from a generational leap in interior design. The redesigned dashboard features a slimmer instrument binnacle profile and sleek, narrow air-conditioning vents. Soft-touch materials are now generously applied across the dashboard and door cards, noticeably curbing the heavy use of hard plastics found in the pre-facelift model. The cabin is available in two colourways: "Starry Black" and "Ivory White".
Powertrain Performance
The 2026 Frontlander offers both petrol and hybrid powertrain options. The petrol variant is powered by an "M20C" 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 126 kW (171 PS) and 205 Nm of torque, paired with a Direct-Shift CVT with 10 simulated speeds.
The hybrid variant features Toyota's 5th-generation intelligent hybrid system, pairing an "M20F" 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine (116 kW/188 Nm) with an electric motor (83 kW/206 Nm) for a higher combined system output of 147 kW (around 200 PS), mated to an E-CVT. Compared to the 2024 hybrid model's 144 kW output, throttle response is noticeably sharper.
On the fuel economy front, the petrol variant is rated at 6.42 L/100 km on the WLTC combined cycle; the hybrid variant achieves an impressive 4.56–4.58 L/100 km, dipping to as low as 4.2 L/100 km in urban driving. The entire range runs on RON 92 petrol.
Chassis & Handling
The 2026 Frontlander gains a major chassis overhaul. Up front, it utilizes a MacPherson strut independent suspension; the rear suspension has been upgraded from the previous torsion beam setup to an E-Type multi-link independent suspension. This hardware change yields noticeable gains in ride comfort and handling stability—body roll is well checked during emergency lane changes, and compliance over rough, potholed tarmac is significantly improved. The electric power steering (EPS) is calibrated with a well-weighted feel that is effortless to manoeuvre. Overall, the chassis feels planted and sure-footed, providing reassuring lateral support in corners.
Cabin & Equipment
The intelligent cockpit represents a headline upgrade for the 2026 Frontlander. The cabin features a 12.9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen (a 10.25-inch unit on the entry Comfort and Hybrid Leading trims) alongside an 8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster. Processing power is now driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SA8155P automotive chip, delivering a slick and responsive user experience. The infotainment suite supports wireless/wired Apple CarPlay, HUAWEI HiCar 5.0, and ICCOA Carlink, alongside the built-in "Hello Xiaoyue" voice assistant featuring dual-zone voice recognition, continuous dialogue, and wake-word-free commands. It also supports driver profile syncing, connected navigation, online streaming entertainment, an in-car app store, Smart Home IoT connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Comfort appointments are bolstered by new additions like 64-colour rhythm-synced ambient lighting and a 50W wireless smartphone fast charger. Synthetic leather upholstery is now standard across the range (with perforated finish on hybrid models), complemented by reshaped front seats that deliver enhanced lateral support and comfort. A power-adjustable driver's seat and automatic climate control are standard across all variants. NVH suppression has also been systematically refined—extra sound-damping material in the headliner reduces rain noise, doors and boot lid gain EPT weatherstripping, and the floor insulation mat features high-strength fibre reinforcement.
Safety & Driver Assistance
In terms of active safety, the 2026 Frontlander comes equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) suite as standard across the range. The system encompasses Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with full-speed stop-and-go functionality, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). Additionally, the new model introduces Parking Support Brake (PKSB) for added low-speed peace of mind in tight urban parking scenarios, while features like parking brake assist and a 360-degree surround-view monitor are now available across more variants.
On the passive safety front, the Frontlander is equipped with 7 airbags as standard (including a driver's knee airbag), with active driving aids delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
Market Performance & Verdict
The Frontlander remains a cornerstone model for GAC Toyota. Full-year sales in 2025 topped 170,000 units, with domestic deliveries in August 2025 alone hitting 14,920 units. Carrying that momentum into 2026, Q1 cumulative sales reached 46,142 units—consistently averaging over 15,000 units monthly—firmly anchoring its position as the bestselling joint-venture compact SUV. Sales in April 2026 stood at 10,876 units.
Industry reviews highlight that the 2026 Frontlander has systematically addressed the key shortcomings of its predecessor through an all-new exterior styling direction, an upgraded 8155-powered 12.9-inch intelligent cockpit, and the transition to a multi-link rear independent suspension. Its core selling points remain the exceptional real-world fuel economy of Toyota's proven 5th-gen hybrid powertrain, standard-fit TSS 3.0 active safety kit, and the solid road composure of the TNGA architecture. On the downside, the powertrain portfolio remains geared strictly toward fuss-free efficiency, lacking a turbocharged or high-performance electrified alternative. Amid aggressive competition from domestic new energy vehicles (NEVs), the Frontlander's proven reputation for bulletproof reliability, low running costs, and sharp refreshed pricing ensure it continues to be a rare, runaway success in the joint-venture compact SUV segment.
