Toyota Corolla

Model Overview

The Corolla is Toyota's core C-segment sedan. Since its global debut in 1966 spanning 12 generations, cumulative worldwide sales have surpassed 50 million units, cementing its status as one of the best-selling nameplates in automotive history and the very benchmark of Toyota's renowned reliability and balanced engineering.

In the Chinese market, the Corolla is manufactured and marketed by FAW Toyota. On 21 December 2025, the 2026 facelifted Corolla was officially launched. The updated lineup comprises six variants across three powertrain choices: a 1.2T turbo petrol, a 1.8L petrol-electric hybrid, and a newly introduced 2.0L naturally aspirated engine. Official retail prices range from RM118,800 to RM149,800, alongside direct-sales campaign pricing from RM99,000 to RM118,000. Its primary rivals include joint-venture compact sedans such as the Volkswagen Lavida and Nissan Sylphy, as well as similarly priced domestic new energy sedans.

Design Language

The 2026 Corolla adopts Toyota's latest "hammerhead" front fascia design language. Up front, it features Camry-style C-shaped full-width light bars and slim LED matrix headlights paired with signature "J"-shaped daytime running lights, complemented by a lower trapezoidal blacked-out honeycomb grille and vertical aero air curtains. In profile, it showcases sharp dual character lines and newly styled alloy wheels, while the rear receives a sleek full-width light bar. With an improved drag coefficient, the overall styling has transitioned from a conservative family look towards a sharper, sportier stance.

Body dimensions are offered in both standard and long-wheelbase options: the standard wheelbase version measures 4,635 × 1,780 × 1,455 mm (L × W × H) with a 2,700 mm wheelbase; the long-wheelbase variant measures 4,710 × 1,780 × 1,435 mm with an extended wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The long-wheelbase model gains an extra 50 mm over the previous generation, offering a boot capacity of 470 litres. Two new exterior paint options—Streamer Silver and Starry Grey—have been introduced; the minimalist interior adds a new "Mist Grey" colour scheme, featuring soft-touch materials across high-contact touchpoints on the dashboard and door cards.

Powertrain Performance

The 2026 Corolla offers three distinct powertrain options:

  • 1.2T Turbo Petrol: Produces a maximum output of 85 kW (116 PS / 114 hp) and 185 Nm of peak torque, paired with a CVT gearbox.

  • 1.8L Hybrid (5th-Gen Intelligent Dual-Engine Hybrid): The petrol engine outputs 72 kW (98 PS / 96 hp) while the electric motor produces 70 kW (95 PS / 94 hp), delivering a combined system output of 101 kW (137 PS / 135 hp). It drives through an E-CVT, returning a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 4.13 L/100 km and a driving range exceeding 1,000 km.

  • 2.0L Naturally Aspirated (New): Powered by a Dynamic Force M20E engine delivering 126 kW (171 PS / 169 hp) and 205 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT gearbox. WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.08 L/100 km.

Of note, the 2026 model line-up has officially phased out the previous 1.5L three-cylinder engine option.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by the TNGA-C platform, the Corolla rides on a suspension setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear E-type multi-link (officially dubbed double-wishbone) independent suspension. Thanks to the low centre of gravity inherent to the TNGA architecture and refined damper tuning, the Corolla delivers class-leading ride comfort, composed bump absorption, well-contained body roll in corners, and a notably more planted, solid chassis feel compared to its predecessor.

Cabin and Equipment

The smart cockpit serves as the headline update for the 2026 model. Higher-spec variants are equipped with an 8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen. Driven by an onboard Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor, the system supports wireless Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife, and Huawei HiCar smartphone integration. The voice assistant features dual-zone voice recognition with up to 30 seconds of continuous dialogue. Range-topping trims also gain a 50W wireless smartphone charger and 64-colour ambient lighting. Base variants continue with an 8-inch central screen and fabric seats, whereas higher trims feature stitched leather upholstery.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety remains a hallmark of the Corolla. The 2026 lineup comes standard across all variants with the Toyota Pilot / TSS 3.0 safety suite, providing full Level 2 (L2) semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Driver assistance features include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with full-speed range, Pre-Collision System (PCS with autonomous emergency braking), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Automatic High Beam (AHB). Passive safety is bolstered by eight airbags (including a driver’s knee airbag), while the high-rigidity GOA shell incorporates 1,470 MPa ultra-high-strength steel.

Market Performance and Verdict

The Corolla has long been one of the top-selling sedans in the Chinese automotive market, backed by a massive owner base in the compact family car segment. The 2026 facelift systematically sharpens its competitiveness by adding the 2.0L engine, introducing a long-wheelbase version (a 50 mm stretch expanding rear legroom to approximately 985 mm), standardising L2 ADAS via TSS 3.0 across all trims, and significantly elevating cabin refinement and connected technologies.

Motoring media reviews highlight that the Corolla's core strengths continue to be the outstanding fuel efficiency of Toyota's hybrid powertrain (delivering WLTC consumption as low as 4.13 L/100 km), the reassurance of standard L2 driver assistance across all trims, and Toyota's rock-solid reputation for reliability alongside strong residual values. Minor criticisms point to the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine offering less punch than similarly priced turbocharged rivals; entry-level trims still relying on steel wheels and hard cabin plastics; the navigation software switching from AutoNavi to NavInfo (which may require user acclimatisation); and the persistent floor hump in the rear centre footwell. Nevertheless, as a global family nameplate spanning over half a century, the 2026 Corolla demonstrates a sensible, pragmatic upgrade strategy, continuing to hold its ground in the petrol and hybrid family sedan market amid the relentless wave of electrification.
