Vehicle Overview

The TANK 400 New Energy is a mid-to-large-size plug-in hybrid hardcore SUV under Great Wall Motor's dedicated TANK marque. On 6 November 2025, the updated TANK 400 New Energy was officially launched. As of June 2026, the 2026 TANK 400 New Energy lineup comprises 3 variants, including the TANK 400 Hi4-T (priced at RM285,800), TANK 400 Hi4-T Intelligent Edition (priced at RM299,800), and TANK 400 Hi4-Z Intelligent Edition (priced at RM319,800). Positioned as an all-terrain hardcore SUV tailored for both city commuting and rugged off-roading, it primarily rivals segment contenders such as the Fangchengbao Bao 5 and Beijing BJ60.
Design Language
The TANK 400 New Energy retains its signature, rugged mecha design language with a distinctly boxy and muscular silhouette. Up front, it features a slim horizontal hexagonal grille flanked by angular LED headlamp clusters, complemented by a restyled front bumper with black mesh accents that elevate its imposing, aggressive stance. The newly introduced "Dunhuang Purple" bespoke exterior colour serves as the visual centerpiece. In profile, the SUV sports a classic boxy profile accentuated by sharp character lines, prominent riveted wheel arch claddings, and gloss black alloy wheels that together forge a robust, mechanical look. At the rear, it features a semi-exposed tailgate-mounted spare tyre and "energy-wing" mechanical tail lamps, which cleverly conceal the autonomous driving "blue indicator light" within. Dimensions for the 2026 model stand at 4,964 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, 1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. For off-road capabilities, it boasts a 33° approach angle, a 31° departure angle, a 235 mm minimum ground clearance, and a maximum water-wading depth of 800 mm.
Inside, the cabin adopts a symmetrical dashboard layout lined with extensive soft-touch materials, accented by sleek chrome trim pieces to deliver an enveloping cockpit feel. Nappa perforated leather upholstery is standard across the range. The dashboard houses a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster alongside a 15.6-inch 2.5K floating infotainment touchscreen; the Intelligent Edition further adds a Head-Up Display (HUD) and a digital streaming rear-view mirror. The gear selector has been upgraded to a steering column-mounted stalk, freeing up valuable storage space across the centre console.
Drivetrain and Performance
The TANK 400 New Energy is offered with two plug-in hybrid powertrains: Hi4-T and Hi4-Z.
The Hi4-T variant pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor. The ICE unit generates a maximum output of 185 kW (252 PS) and a peak torque of 380 Nm, while the electric motor produces 120 kW (163 PS). Together, the system delivers a combined output of 300 kW and 750 Nm of torque, mated to a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission (9HAT). The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 6.8 seconds. Juiced by a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, it delivers a WLTC pure electric range of 105 km. Rated WLTC combined fuel consumption stands at 2.26 L/100 km, with a depleted battery consumption of around 8.4 L/100 km. DC fast charging from 30% to 80% takes just 24 minutes.
The Hi4-Z variant delivers even greater performance, pairing the 2.0-litre turbo engine with dual P2 and P4 electric motors. The engine outputs 185 kW (252 PS), while the two motors churn out 215 kW and 240 kW respectively, taking total system output beyond 400 kW (approx. 544 PS). This setup is paired with a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Drawing power from a larger 59.05 kWh battery pack, it achieves a CLTC pure electric range of 200 km, with depleted battery fuel economy hovering around 8.3 L/100 km.
Chassis and Handling
The TANK 400 New Energy is built on a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis. Underneath, it features a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a solid-axle non-independent rear suspension. The Hi4-T version employs a mechanical four-wheel drive (4WD) system, with the off-road model equipped with a BorgWarner ESOF part-time 4WD system. The vehicle comes fitted with triple differential locks (front, centre, and rear). The traction battery is safely integrated above the chassis frame rail within the boot floor, preventing undercarriage impacts during extreme off-roading. The Hi4-Z version features an electronically decoupled 4WD setup. Standard off-road driver aids include Tank Turn and Crawl Control. Power-deployable side running boards are fitted as standard across the range.
Cabin and Equipment
On the connectivity front, the 2026 TANK 400 features the third-generation Coffee OS 3 infotainment system driven by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset. The setup integrates the Coffee GPT AI voice model. The 15.6-inch 2.5K display supports 4-zone voice recognition, "see-and-speak" commands, and continuous multi-turn dialogue. Smartphone integration covers HUAWEI HiCar, Apple CarPlay, and Carlink. 5G connectivity and Over-The-Air (OTA) update capabilities are standard across the range.
In terms of convenience and comfort, heated and ventilated front seats are standard; the Intelligent Edition adds 3-level 8-point seat massage along with 4-way power lumbar support for the driver. A newly incorporated 5.4-litre on-board refrigerator offers cooling down to -6°C and warming up to 50°C. The Intelligent Edition also gains a 15.6-inch fold-down rear entertainment roof monitor paired with a 14-speaker premium audio system. A 540° surround-view camera system (with transparent underbody display) is standard equipment. Boot capacity stands at a generous 789 litres, expandable to 1,803 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance
Advanced driver assistance systems represent the highlight upgrade of the 2026 TANK 400, powered by Great Wall Motor's cutting-edge Coffee Pilot Ultra suite. On the hardware side, the Intelligent Edition is equipped with 1 LiDAR unit, 11 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The system supports end-to-end City Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) and Highway NOA. Following its first OTA rollout in May 2026, the vehicle added "point-to-point" full-scenario NOA, which works alongside ETC toll systems to provide uninterrupted assisted driving from parking bay to parking bay. Automated valet parking and reverse tracking assist are also included. Active safety aids comprise Lane Change Assist, Door Opening Warning, Rear Collision Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with auto brake. In independent third-party summer evaluations, the TANK 400 Hi4-T achieved top rankings in the off-road group for both the stationary truck ACC braking test and the reversing child pedestrian avoidance test.
Market Performance and Verdict

In terms of market reception, the TANK 400 New Energy has cemented its benchmark status in the RM280,000 to RM320,000 mid-to-large PHEV hardcore 4x4 segment, propelled by its mecha styling, the Hi4-T hybrid powertrain's balance of potent power and low fuel consumption, the rugged capabilities of its ladder-frame chassis with triple diff-locks, and the advanced Coffee Pilot Ultra driver assistance system. The Hi4-T variant serves as an ideal package for daily commuters who engage in weekend off-roading; meanwhile, the Hi4-Z variant—with its larger battery pack and higher horsepower—caters to buyers seeking extended electric driving range and supreme performance. Overall, through this dual-powertrain strategy, the TANK 400 New Energy accurately satisfies diverse requirements ranging from suburban trail-bashing to cross-country overland expeditions, establishing itself as a dominant force in the new energy hardcore off-road vehicle market.
