Brand Overview

Radical (formerly Radical Sportscars) is a British racing and high-performance sports car manufacturer, founded in 1997 by racing driver Mick Hyde and automotive engineer Phil Abbott in Cambridgeshire, England, now headquartered in Peterborough. The brand started with unique technical routes of open-cockpit prototype racing cars, lightweight tubular frames, and motorcycle engine power. After more than two decades, it has developed into the world's second-largest professional racing car manufacturer by production volume, with mass production scale second only to Porsche Motorsport.Radical's core product line covers series of racing cars and road-legal models from entry-level SR1 to top-level RXC, with over 3,000 owners globally, business covering 23 countries and regions, and operating 14 single-brand series races. In 2009, Radical SR8 LM topped the production car lap time leaderboard at Nürburgring Nordschleife with a lap time of 6 minutes 48 seconds. This record lasted for 12 years, becoming the most dazzling performance tag in the brand's history.

Development History

The brand's history starts in 1996. Phil Abbott handcrafted the first prototype - the 1100 Clubsport - in his workshop in Cambridgeshire. Designed based on Kawasaki motorcycle engines and small open-cockpit steel tube frames, it aimed to compete in the Sports 2000 category under the 750 Motor Club.On January 28, 1997, Abbott and Mick Hyde officially registered Radical Sportscars. In April of the same year, the 1100 Clubsport made its debut at Brands Hatch track.By 1999, the number of 1100 Clubsports was enough to fill the entire starting grid. The Radical Challenge single-brand series race was born, regarded as the prototype for Radical's commercial unified racing.

In 1999, the 1300 Prosport was launched, equipped with a handcrafted RPE 1300cc racing-spec engine, featuring F3 size slick tires and adjustable rear wing, and entered the US market for the first time that year for SCCA D-Sport category competition. In 2001, the landmark SR3 was officially launched. This model adopted a two-seater layout for the first time, positioned as a global competition machine compliant with FIA CN prototype specifications, and quickly became Radical's best-selling and most iconic model. In 2005, the SR8, equipped with a self-designed RPE 2.6-liter V8 engine by Radical, joined the product line. With 460 hp pushing a 650 kg carbon fiber body, it accelerated to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, pushing the brand's performance to a new height.

In 2006, Radical participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time with the SR9 LMP2 racing car, taking a step towards the international top endurance racing scene. In August 2009, the SR8 LM created a Nürburgring Nordschleife production car lap time record with a time of 6 minutes 48 seconds. In 2011, the brand unveiled the SR3 SL, its first road-legal model with a four-wheeled car engine, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Since then, it has gradually extended from a track-exclusive manufacturer to the road-legal racing sector. The RXC launched in 2013 is the brand's first fully enclosed cockpit model, integrating all aerodynamic and engineering experience accumulated from the SR9 Le Mans race car, and received EU whole vehicle type certification in 2015.

In 2016, the 1,000th SR3 officially went off the line. In 2017, marking the brand's 20th anniversary, total production exceeded 2,000 units, and a new brand logo was released in the same year.In 2020, the turbocharged SR10 model was launched. Equipped with a Ford EcoBoost 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, 50 units were sold within 9 months of launch, becoming the fastest-selling model in the brand's history. In 2022, the brand was officially renamed from Radical Sportscars to Radical Motorsport, marking a strategic shift to fully focus on track-exclusive models.

Core Technologies

Tubular Space Frame and Lightweight Composite Body

Radical series models adopt high-strength steel tube space frame structure, providing excellent strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity. Body panels use lightweight composite fiberglass, combining low cost and easy maintenance advantages. On flagship models, carbon fiber and Kevlar reinforcement materials are widely used, body torsional stiffness and safety protection performance are at top level.

RPE Engine Technology

Radical has an independent subsidiary Radical Performance Engines (RPE), dedicated to developing racing-grade engines for the brand. RPE's core products include multi-generational 1.34-liter to 1.5-liter inline-four naturally aspirated engines (max RPM up to 10,000 rpm) and the iconic 2.6-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine (max RPM 10,500 rpm, max output 460 hp).RPE is also responsible for track customization of Ford EcoBoost series engines, covering internal forging parts, dry sump, and custom Garrett turbo exhaust manifold deep modifications.

Motorcycle Engine Power Route

Radical started with a motorcycle engine power route in the early days, 1100 Clubsport was designed based on Kawasaki motorcycle power system. The SR8 merged two Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engines into a dedicated 2.6-liter V8 engine, achieving ultimate engineering fusion of motorcycle engine lightweight, high-RPM response, and large-displacement V8 output characteristics.

Aerodynamics and Chassis Tuning

Radical's pursuit of aerodynamic downforce runs through all models. SR3 can produce 600 kg of air downforce at a speed of 200 km/h, far exceeding the level of conventional production supercars.High downforce combined with low center of gravity, double wishbone pushrod suspension and sequential gearbox, as well as drive torque distribution precisely optimized by Quaife limited-slip differential, formed the hard power of Radical models to be unmatched on the track.

Overseas Layout

Radical's globalization layout adopts a "Headquarters Production + Regional Distribution + Unified Racing" integrated strategy. Headquarters and core manufacturing plants are located in Peterborough, UK, all models are designed and produced by hand here.As of 2026, the brand has 34 authorized dealers, business covering 23 countries, operating 11 national championships, 5 regional series races, and 1 intercontinental championship globally.

In the Americas, Radical established a mature racing system with North America as the core. Starting from 2026, it will return to the European continent under the name of Radical Cup Europe. The season covers multiple classic tracks such as Mugello, Barcelona-Catalunya, etc., setting SR3 and SR10 two competition levels.

In addition, mature Radical racing organizations are also established in Australia, Mexico, and the Middle East region. In the Chinese market, Radical gradually builds brand awareness through Greater China general agent Canhui International, relying on ChinaGT events and Southern track day activities such as Zhaoqing.

Future Outlook

As of 2026, Radical's future strategic direction is clearly focused on "Deep Expansion of Racing System" and "Continuous Update of Product Line". At the racing level, the brand is fully restoring the direct-operated unified racing system on the European continent. Radical Cup Europe is planned to be officially put into operation in 2026, initially planning five rounds. This will help the brand further integrate the dealer network in its market of origin and improve the penetration rate of the brand among regional high-end customer groups.

At the product level, the brand's existing core models SR1, SR3, and SR10 have all entered the XXR generation. In the future, platform iteration and technology upgrades will continue to be carried out annually. The delivery of Project 25 limited supercar is seen as an important signal for the brand to launch an attack on a higher performance level, but delivery progress has not been publicly updated so far. With global carbon emission regulations becoming increasingly strict, whether Radical will introduce hybrid or pure electric power systems while maintaining extreme lightweight and track DNA in the future will be a long-term indicator to observe the brand's technical shift.

At the capital and globalization level, Radical has obtained sufficient capital support for new model R&D and global network layout through the introduction of private investment consortia. According to the company's previous plan, the US market as the core export destination accounting for 90% is expected to continue to see further expansion of Radical Cup event scale. In Asia, with Japan as a fulcrum, the brand plans to extend the sales network to Southeast Asia and the Middle East.If the new product launch goes smoothly, Radical is expected to consolidate its position as the world's second-largest professional racing car manufacturer in the next few years, and continue to push the experience and quality of British hand-built racing engineering to a broader international stage.
