Parking Surveillance

2026-10-20 23:40:00

Parking Surveillance (also known as Sentry Mode) refers to a technical system that continuously monitors a vehicle's surroundings using in-car dashcams, 360-degree surround-view cameras, or dedicated security sensors while the vehicle is parked, switched off, and left unattended. As a vital extension of modern connected vehicle safety systems, parking surveillance automatically wakes up and records video evidence whenever the vehicle experiences an impact, scratches, suspicious movement nearby, or unauthorised towing, effectively preventing property damage and hit-and-run incidents when stationary.

Core Technical Architecture and Operating Principles

The technical architecture of parking surveillance centres around low-power hardware wake-up, multi-sensor integration, and encrypted cloud storage:

Ultra-low power sleep mode with all-weather radar/vision trigger:

To prevent the vehicle's 12V battery from draining completely during prolonged parking, the surveillance system enters a deep sleep state once the engine/ignition is turned off. Only micro-power ultrasonic sensors, millimetre-wave radars, or vision AI modules remain active. When the system detects unusual body vibrations, impacts, or a moving subject loitering within the preset perimeter for an extended period, it instantly triggers the main processor and cameras to capture critical video footage before and after the event.

Encrypted cloud transmission and remote security alerts:

In high-end smart vehicles, parking surveillance is deeply integrated with the vehicle telematics system. Once a security incident is triggered, the system not only saves encrypted footage to a local micro-SD card or automotive-grade solid-state drive (SSD), but also pushes real-time alert notifications to the owner's smartphone via the built-in 4G/5G module. Owners can remotely access live camera feeds or check the vehicle's status via the mobile app at any time.

Safety Guidelines and Operational Limits

Do not run high-load parking surveillance continuously without a low-voltage battery cut-off protector or during extended parking, as this can severely drain the car battery:

Parking surveillance systems draw continuous power from the 12V auxiliary battery. It is essential not to exceed the battery's operational limit. Leaving the vehicle parked for long periods without setting a voltage cut-off threshold (which cuts power automatically when battery voltage falls below a preset safe level) can lead to deep battery discharge, degrading battery life and leaving the vehicle unable to start.

Do not misuse high-sensitivity parking surveillance in privacy-sensitive public zones or legally restricted areas to avoid infringing on personal privacy:

The wide-angle cameras on parking surveillance systems indiscriminately capture footage of surrounding public and private spaces. Misusing surveillance footage in breach of local laws and regulations is strictly prohibited. Particularly in jurisdictions with strict data protection and privacy laws, publishing or commercially using recorded footage that reveals pedestrians' faces and vehicle registration number plates without consent may violate privacy legislation. Vehicle owners should always adjust surveillance parameters responsibly and lawfully.
