2026-10-02 19:10:00

Model Overview

The NIO ES7 is an all-electric mid-to-large luxury SUV from NIO, making its global debut on 15 June 2022 as the first SUV underpinned by NIO’s second-generation technology platform (NT2.0). In 2024, NIO rolled out a refreshed model, offering the 2024 ES7 in two battery variants—75 kWh and 100 kWh—priced between RM438,000 and RM518,000; the top-spec 100 kWh Signature Edition carries a recommended retail price of RM498,000. The 2026 model is priced from RM406,800 to RM456,800. Pitched as a "smart electric mid-to-large SUV," it caters specifically to the premium 5-seater family SUV segment, locking horns with rivals like the Li Auto L7, XPeng G9, and Tesla Model Y.

Design Language

The NIO ES7 wears NIO’s signature X-Bar family design language, taking styling cues from the ET7 saloon. Up front, it features a sleek closed-off grille paired with split LED headlamps and sharp daytime running lights. Along the sides, clean and muscular character lines are complemented by large, high-profile tyres and flush pop-out door handles. Round the back, the dynamic styling is highlighted by distinctive full-width LED taillights. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,912 mm long, 1,987 mm wide, and 1,720 mm tall, with a generous 2,960 mm wheelbase. It achieves an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.263 Cd. Buyers can choose from 8 exterior colour options.

Inside, the ES7 adopts a "Second Living Room" cabin philosophy, blending contemporary home comfort with natural elements. The dashboard showcases a dual-tier S-Shape layout, extensively trimmed in eco-friendly Karuun renewable rattan. The tech-laden cabin is fitted with a 10.2-inch HDR full-digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch AMOLED floating central touchscreen, and a 6.6-inch HDR rear multi-function control display for seamless multi-screen synergy. The interior is available in 3 bespoke colour themes.

Power and Performance

Under the skin, the NIO ES7 is built on NIO’s second-generation high-efficiency electric drive platform utilising silicon carbide (SiC) power modules. All variants come standard with an intelligent dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup, pairing a 180 kW front permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 300 kW rear AC induction motor. Together, the system churns out a total output of 480 kW (approx. 653 PS) and 850 Nm of torque. This allows the SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 3.9 seconds, on to a top speed of 200 km/h.

Range-wise, two battery packs are available: a 75 kWh unit (hybrid ternary lithium and LFP chemistry) and a 100 kWh ternary lithium pack, offering CLTC-rated electric ranges of 485 km and 620 km respectively; a long-range 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery promising up to 930 km of range will be introduced down the road. Equipped with a 400V high-voltage fast-charging architecture, a DC fast charge from flat to 80% takes around 30 minutes. Owners can also leverage NIO’s nationwide battery swap station network for a swift 3-minute battery swap. Energy consumption is rated at 17.6 kWh/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinning the ES7 is a front double-wishbone and rear H-Arm multi-link independent air suspension setup. Adaptive air suspension and Continuous Damping Control (CDC) come standard across the range, working in tandem with NIO’s in-house Intelligent Chassis Controller (ICC) for pinpoint suspension tuning. The system offers adaptive ride height and damping stiffness adjustments—dropping lower and firming up in Sport mode, while raising ground clearance and softening up in Comfort mode. The CDC system can perform real-time damping micro-adjustments up to 500 times per second. Furthermore, the chassis boasts an ideal 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. Stopping power is handled by standard high-performance Brembo four-piston front brake calipers. Drivers can toggle between 10 driving modes to effortlessly tackle diverse driving conditions.

Cockpit and Equipment

On the tech front, the 2024 ES7 upgrades to an automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset (replacing the previous Snapdragon 8155 chip), which roughly doubles CPU processing power and triples GPU graphic performance. The infotainment system runs on NIO’s proprietary Banyan smart operating system. A head-up display (HUD) is standard across all trims. The NOMI in-car AI voice assistant supports four-zone dedicated voice recognition and now features integrated LLM AI capabilities via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

In terms of cabin amenities, the front passenger seat features NIO’s signature ‘Queen Co-pilot’ setup with power extendable leg and footrests. The front seats come standard with 14-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions, while the rear seats feature seat heating and power-adjustable backrests that recline from 23° to 31°. The 2024 update further adds standard rear seat massage and four ultra-soft headrest cushions. Audiophiles will appreciate the 23-speaker 7.1.4 immersive sound system. Additional creature comforts include 256-colour ambient lighting, a smart zoned electrochromic panoramic glass roof, soft-close doors, and a hands-free powered tailgate. Boot capacity is well-proportioned to easily meet the luggage demands of a five-member family.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is anchored by a high-rigidity body structure. Passive safety equipment includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and a front-centre airbag.

Autonomous driving tech is a standout headline for the ES7, featuring NIO Autonomous Drive (NAD) as standard across the board. The hardware suite is anchored by the NIO Aquila Super Sensing suite, packing an Innovusion Falcon 150-line ultra-long-range high-precision LiDAR, 5 millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 7 8MP high-resolution cameras, and 4 surround-view cameras. Crunching the data is the NIO Adam supercomputing platform, driven by four NVIDIA Drive Orin-X SoCs with a combined computing power of 1,016 TOPS. The suite delivers Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assist, including full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Sign Recognition, and automated highway ramp entry/exit. It also supports Navigate on Pilot Plus (NOP+) for highway cruising and automated parking assist.

Market Performance and Verdict

Despite its solid technical credentials, the NIO ES7 has struggled to make a strong commercial impact since its debut. Total deliveries in 2025 stood at a modest 339 units, with monthly sales showing wild swings—recording 330 units in January 2025, dipping to just 1 unit in April and 3 units in May, before rebounding to 339 units in June. The headwinds worsened entering 2026, with retail sales recording just 29 units in January and 27 units in February. Industry observers point out that the ES7’s "critically acclaimed but slow-selling" predicament stems from its pure electric range not offering a distinct advantage in its class (given the steep entry price for the 485 km base variant), alongside a starting price of RM438,000 that feels uncomfortably high amidst an intensifying EV price war. On the ownership front, owners consistently praise its 3.9-second century sprint, refined ride from the air suspension + CDC combo, responsive NOMI voice AI, and the unmatched convenience of NIO's battery swapping. However, critics note that rear cabin space packaging and suspension finesse still fall slightly short of traditional European luxury marques. On the whole, backed by the NT2.0 architecture, brisk 3.9-second dual-motor AWD performance, air suspension with CDC, a 1,016 TOPS computing powerhouse, and a unique battery swap ecosystem, the NIO ES7 has carved out a unique high-tech proposition in the RM430,000 to RM520,000 premium pure electric SUV arena; nevertheless, hampered by tricky product positioning, premium pricing, and cut-throat market competition, its commercial sales have fallen significantly shy of expectations.
