Intelligent Chassis

2026-10-30 02:40:00

An automotive intelligent chassis (Smart Chassis) refers to a next-generation vehicle chassis system that deeply integrates traditional mechanical chassis components (steering, braking, suspension, and driveline) with modern electrical and electronic (E/E) architectures, sensor networks, and artificial intelligence algorithms. It is capable of autonomously perceiving, decision-making, and executing coordinated control based on road conditions, driver inputs, and vehicle dynamics, serving as the core physical foundation for high-level autonomous driving and superior ride and handling.

Core Operating Principles and Technical Characteristics

The core of an intelligent chassis lies in "by-wire actuation, centralised domain controller coordination, and active vehicle dynamic posture adjustment":

Chassis-by-wire and decoupled control: By adopting steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and active suspension systems, rigid mechanical linkages between conventional chassis components are completely eliminated. Vehicle control inputs are transmitted purely via high-reliability electronic signals, allowing actuators to independently modulate individual wheel steering angles, braking torque, and damper settings with millisecond-level response times.

Multi-sensor fusion and full-domain chassis control: Equipped with road preview cameras, LiDAR, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and wheel-speed sensors, the chassis domain controller (VDCM) gathers real-time 3D vehicle motion data (longitudinal, lateral, and vertical) alongside road surface undulation profiles. It proactively adjusts suspension damping, ride height, or torque vectoring to effectively counteract pitch, body roll, and harsh road bumps.

Global Market Applications and Evolution

Intelligent chassis systems are widely deployed in premium smart new energy vehicles (NEVs), flagship luxury saloons, and autonomous Robotaxi fleets worldwide, representing a key technological battleground for carmakers seeking to build competitive technical moats.

As vehicle E/E architectures shift towards centralised computing, intelligent chassis technology is rapidly evolving from isolated electronic sub-systems (such as standalone adaptive dampers or electric power steering) towards "integrated full-vehicle dynamic control" (coordinated four-wheel control combining steering, braking, suspension, and propulsion). Modern intelligent chassis setups not only tailor ride and handling characteristics across various drive modes, but also intervene in extreme driving conditions for active hazard avoidance.

Operational Precautions and Industry Guidelines

Unauthorised modifications to chassis-by-wire hardware—such as retrofitting non-genuine stiffened lowering springs, installing aftermarket electronic piggyback modules, or tampering with chassis CAN bus protocols—are strictly prohibited. These modifications disrupt the chassis domain controller's vehicle dynamics calibration, significantly increasing the risk of loss of control at high speeds or under limit-handling scenarios.

Never continue driving at high speeds if the vehicle indicates sensor calibration errors, chassis domain controller fault codes, or active air suspension malfunctions. Intelligent chassis systems rely heavily on precise hardware-software synergy; a single component failure can cause abnormal vehicle stability issues. The vehicle should be taken immediately to an authorised service centre for recalibration and diagnostic troubleshooting using dedicated OEM scan tools.
