Mercedes-Benz GLC PHEV

2026-10-11 09:50:00

Model Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLC PHEV is the plug-in hybrid variant of the brand's best-selling mid-size luxury SUV, the GLC. Built on the latest X254-generation GLC launched in 2022, it is engineered under Mercedes-Benz's comprehensive electrification strategy of developing ICE and electrified models on a shared platform. Pitching "petrol and electric versatility with zero range anxiety" as its core proposition, the GLC PHEV maintains the brand's hallmark luxury quality and ride comfort, primarily appealing to urban family buyers looking for SUV practicality alongside lower daily running costs. In the Chinese market, the GLC PHEV is offered in a sole GLC 350 e L 4MATIC (long-wheelbase) variant, with official pricing starting from RM518,000. Its key rivals include mid-size luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs such as the BMW X3 xDrive30e and Volvo XC60 Recharge.

Design Language

Visually, the GLC PHEV closely mirrors its ICE-powered sibling, distinguishing its electrified powertrain only through subtle styling cues. Up front, it features the marque's signature star-pattern radiator grille with chrome pins flanking a prominent three-pointed star emblem, flanked by LED High Performance headlights with projectors (with DIGITAL LIGHT available as an option). Sportier bumper air intakes flank the lower fascia. In profile, the sleek character lines and the signature "yacht-inspired" C-pillar design are retained, preserving the GLC's classic proportions. The charging flap is situated on the rear left wing. At the rear, slim, inverted-triangular tail lights are linked by a full-width chrome strip. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,826 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,714 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,977 mm (the long-wheelbase variant gains an extra 100 mm over the standard-wheelbase model, directly translating into more rear legroom). Wheel sizes are available in 19-inch and 20-inch options.

Inside, the GLC PHEV adopts Mercedes-Benz's latest interior architecture, echoing the dashboard layout of the W206 C-Class. The centre console is dominated by an 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display (canted six degrees towards the driver) alongside a 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster. Generous use of premium leather upholstery and metallic trims is complemented by 64-colour ambient lighting to create a plush, high-tech cabin. A flat-bottom sports steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather completes the cockpit.

Powertrain and Performance

The GLC PHEV is powered by a plug-in hybrid system pairing a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine with an electric drive motor:

  • Engine: 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine (M254), producing 150 kW (around 204 hp) and 320 Nm of torque.

  • Electric Motor: Permanent magnet synchronous motor (housed within the 9-speed transmission), delivering 100 kW (around 136 hp) and 440 Nm of torque.

  • Combined Output: Total system output stands at 250 kW (around 340 hp) and 600 Nm of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission (9G-TRONIC) paired with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in 6.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 218 km/h. Energy is stored in a 30.9 kWh liquid-cooled ternary lithium battery pack, delivering a WLTP-rated pure electric range of approximately 119–131 km (spec-dependent). Under China's CLTC cycle, the electric range extends up to 138 km. It supports 60 kW DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, while 11 kW AC charging completes a 0–100% recharge in roughly 2.5 hours. Combined fuel consumption under the WLTC cycle is rated at just 0.8–1.0 L/100 km with a fully charged battery, and around 7.0–7.5 L/100 km in charge-depleted hybrid mode.

Chassis and Handling

The GLC PHEV is built on the MRA-2 platform (longitudinal rear-wheel-drive architecture), which has been comprehensively optimised for weight savings, torsional rigidity, and electrification packaging. Suspension is handled by a four-link independent front setup and a multi-link independent rear setup, equipped as standard with the ADS+ adaptive damping system that continuously varies damper stiffness based on road conditions and the selected drive mode. Higher-spec variants can be optioned with AIRMATIC air suspension with active ride height adjustment.

A drive mode selector comes standard, offering modes including Electric, Hybrid, Sport, Off-road, and Individual. The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system provides sure-footed traction on wet tarmac and across light off-road terrain. Steering is handled by a speed-sensitive electric power steering rack for natural, linear feedback. Stopping power comes from ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, supported by an electronic brake booster and three-stage adjustable regenerative braking managed via steering wheel paddles.

Cabin and Equipment

The GLC PHEV adopts a 5-seater layout, with the long-wheelbase variant providing particularly generous rear legroom. The seats are wrapped in premium leather, with the front pews offering multi-way power adjustment, heating, and memory functions (seat ventilation is available on higher trims). The rear bench features a 40:20:40 split-folding design; standard boot capacity is rated at 470 litres (slightly lower than the standard ICE model due to battery packaging over the rear axle), expanding to 1,480 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Creature comforts include dual-zone automatic climate control (four-zone optional), a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, and a powered hands-free tailgate with kick sensor. Infotainment duties are managed by the second-generation MBUX system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected navigation, OTA software updates, and the "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant. Audiophiles are catered to by a standard Burmester® surround sound system pushing 710 W through 15 speakers.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The GLC PHEV comes standard across the range with the Mercedes-Benz Driving Assistance Plus package, delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The suite bundles active safety features such as Active Brake Assist (with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction monitoring), Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality), Traffic Sign Assist, and Active Parking Assist with a 360-degree surround-view camera. On the passive safety front, a rigid body shell is paired with a comprehensive airbag network including dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and a driver's knee airbag.

Market Performance and Verdict

The GLC remains one of Mercedes-Benz's global best-sellers, having racked up over 2.6 million deliveries worldwide since the nameplate debuted in 2015. As a plug-in hybrid, the GLC PHEV delivers around 130 km of pure electric range, enabling tailpipe-emission-free daily commutes alongside long-distance cruising without range anxiety—neatly satisfying luxury mid-size SUV buyers who want both efficiency and practicality. In China, Mercedes-Benz's decision to offer it exclusively in long-wheelbase guise further bolsters its core strength in rear cabin space. Compared to rivals like the BMW X3 xDrive30e (approx. 50 km EV range) and Volvo XC60 Recharge (approx. 64 km EV range), the GLC PHEV commands a decisive lead in pure electric range, which serves as its headline selling point. Backed by strong brand equity, the GLC PHEV holds a commanding position in the premium plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
