2026-10-04 18:30:01

Model Overview

The BMW X3 is the BMW Group's core mid-size luxury SUV (officially dubbed by BMW as an SAV—Sports Activity Vehicle). Since the debut of the first-generation model (E83) in 2003, it has evolved across four generations. In the Chinese domestic market, the BMW X3 is assembled by Brilliance BMW. In February 2025, the all-new locally assembled long-wheelbase BMW X3 (chassis code G48) was first launched, marking the first time the X3 nameplate has offered a long-wheelbase variant. On 23 January 2026, the 2026 BMW X3 Long Wheelbase was officially rolled out. The updated line-up continues with three variants, carrying official recommended retail prices ranging from RM318,000 to RM398,000. Compared with the 2025 model's pricing of RM349,900 to RM449,900, the 2026 range sees substantial price reductions across the board, down by RM31,900 to RM51,900 depending on the variant. Key rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5L.

Design Language

The 2026 BMW X3 carries forward the design styling of the latest-generation model. Up front, it features a kidney grille that is roughly 20% larger and equipped with the BMW Iconic Glow illuminated grille; the headlamp units have been upgraded with twin L-shaped daytime running light (DRL) signatures. Along the sides, it features semi-flush door handles, while the rear gets arrow-feather-styled LED taillights and concealed exhaust tailpipes. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,865 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,664 mm tall, with a wheelbase stretching to 2,975 mm. Compared to the previous-generation model (2,864 mm wheelbase), the wheelbase has grown by 111 mm. The 2026 line-up comes standard across all variants with the M Sport Shadowline Package, M Sport steering wheel, and M Sport alloy wheels. Five exterior colours are available: Mineral White, Speed Blue, Brooklyn Grey, Skyscraper Grey, and Carbon Black; the range-topping variant also offers Frozen Grey matte paint and 21-inch BMW Individual wheels as a no-cost option. Inside, the cockpit features an integrated floating curved display pairing a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Upholstery choices include three dual-tone Veganza synthetic leather options: Dual-tone Mocha, Dual-tone Stellar Blue, and Dual-tone Flame Red. Higher-spec variants further gain CraftedClarity crystal glass interior elements.

Drivetrain and Performance

The 2026 BMW X3 is powered across the range by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system fitted as standard across all variants. Two states of tune are on offer:

  • xDrive25L M Sport Shadowline Package (Low Output): Delivers a maximum output of 140 kW (190 PS) and a peak torque of 310 Nm.

  • xDrive30L Leading / Exclusive M Sport Shadowline Package (High Output): Delivers a maximum output of 190 kW (258 PS) and a peak torque of 400 Nm.

The high-output version completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.6 seconds. The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is standard across the board.

Chassis and Handling

The BMW X3 is underpinned by a double-joint spring-strut front suspension and a five-link rear independent suspension. The chassis has been meticulously calibrated by engineers to deliver significantly enhanced ride comfort and bump absorption. The vehicle achieves an almost perfect 50:50 front-to-rear axle weight distribution. A 19% increase in the front wheel caster angle improves straight-line cruising stability. The fourth-generation xDrive system can adjust torque distribution in just 0.1 seconds. Boasting a ground clearance of 214 mm alongside ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and ARB-X actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation, it offers capable light off-road passability.

Cabin and Equipment

On the smart cockpit front, the 2026 BMW X3 runs on the BMW Operating System 9 (iDrive 9). The interface employs a "Zero-Layer" user experience, supporting four-zone intelligent voice control, wake-word-free commands, and continuous voice recognition.

Standard kit across the 2026 range includes: heated front seats, powered driver seat lumbar support with memory function, 5G connectivity, a 360-degree surround-view camera, 200-metre Reversing Assistant, Driving Assistant, and rear side airbags. The mid-spec xDrive30L Leading variant gains a full-colour Head-Up Display (HUD). Audiophiles will appreciate the 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system fitted on the 30L variants. Courtesy of the generous 2,975 mm wheelbase, rear legroom extends beyond 1 metre; the rear seat squab has also been lengthened by 65 mm and thickened by 10 mm, with backrest reclining adjustability up to 31 degrees.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the all-new BMW X3 Long Wheelbase has earned dual five-star safety ratings from both C-NCAP and C-GCAP. The 2026 model now comes standard with rear side airbags across all trims. For active safety, an L2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is standard-fit across the range, packing Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, and Automated Parking Assist. Higher-spec models are equipped with the 3rd-generation BMW Intelligent Driving System, which adds highway exit/ramp assist with eye-tracking gaze confirmation.

Market Performance and Verdict

The BMW X3 continues to post robust sales figures in the Chinese market, clocking 7,417 units in December 2025 alone. The 2026 model sharpens its competitive edge via a "more kit for less money" formula—slashing official retail prices by RM31,900 to RM51,900 while considerably expanding standard kit. That said, the exterior design of the all-new X3 has drawn mixed reactions among enthusiasts. Within the mid-size luxury SUV arena, the X3 carves out its niche via a distinct blend of "driving dynamics heritage and accessible smart tech", setting itself apart from the comfort-oriented Mercedes-Benz GLC and the tech-led Audi Q5L. Standing as a pillars of BMW's X family, the X3 sustains its formidable market presence in this hotly contested segment thanks to class-above cabin space from its stretched wheelbase, engaging dynamics from the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and fully upgraded smart tech.
