The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the brand's entry-level compact luxury crossover SUV. The first-generation GLA (codename X156) made its global debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was locally assembled in China by Beijing Benz in 2014, serving as the fourth model built on Mercedes-Benz's MFA front-wheel-drive architecture. The second-generation GLA (codename H247) debuted globally in 2019, built on the second-generation MFA platform (MFA2). As the smallest member of the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup, the GLA targets the youthful, urban luxury crossover market, competing primarily against the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. In April 2025, Beijing Benz launched the 2025 facelifted GLA lineup, offering 3 variants priced between RM299,900 and RM346,900. For 2026, selected overseas and regional markets received the GLA Nightfall Edition minor update, further sharpening its competitive edge.

Design Language
The GLA incorporates contemporary design cues from Mercedes-Benz's compact luxury lineup. Up front, polygonal LED headlamps with torch-like daytime running lights flank a diamond-pin radiator grille, paired with a sporty front bumper for an aggressive and dynamic stance. The side profile retains taut, muscular proportions, complemented by high-luminosity quad-ring LED tail lamps at the rear.
Compared to its predecessor, the second-generation GLA has grown across all dimensions, featuring a 2,729 mm wheelbase and a height of 1,611 mm to provide more generous knee room and headroom. The 2025 GLA 200 measures 4,427 × 1,834 × 1,620 mm, while the GLA 220 4MATIC measures 4,446 × 1,849 × 1,625 mm. The exterior is available in 7 paint shades, including Polar White, Obsidian Black, High-tech Silver, Mountain Grey, Spectral Blue, alongside two bespoke MANUFAKTUR finishes.
The GLA offers a variety of trim and styling packages, including the Style package, Progressive line, AMG Line sports package, and the Night Package. The 2026 Nightfall Edition dials up the de-chromed look further, adding high-gloss black finishes to the front bumper lip, side skirts, wing mirror caps, roof rails, and the front grille.
Inside, the entire GLA range features twin 10.25-inch digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system as standard. Higher-spec and AMG Line variants gain a flat-bottom Nappa leather sports steering wheel with contrast red stitching for a more driver-focused cockpit feel. A 64-colour ambient lighting system is standard across the board.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLA is offered with two powertrain options. The GLA 200 is driven by a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (co-developed with Renault) producing 120 kW (163 PS) and 270 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) driving the front wheels. The GLA 220 and GLA 220 4MATIC are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine churning out 140 kW (190 PS) and 300 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed wet DCT. The 2.0T variants feature a 48V mild-hybrid system that aids engine stop-start operation, provides an e-boost under acceleration, and recuperates energy while coasting. The GLA 220 4MATIC comes with the 4MATIC on-demand all-wheel-drive system. The GLA 220 completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.1 seconds. Selected global markets also offer the GLA 250 with 224 PS, as well as the GLA 250e plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Meanwhile, the performance-oriented AMG GLA 35 4MATIC pushes out 306 PS from its 2.0T engine, dispatching the century sprint in 5.2 seconds.
Chassis and Handling
The GLA is underpinned by Mercedes-Benz's second-generation MFA modular front-wheel-drive platform. The suspension setup comprises MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link independent setup at the rear. The rear suspension features separate springs and dampers, which ensures precise wheel control while maximising interior boot and cabin packaging. Drivetrain layouts include front-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, with the latter utilising an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch central differential. Steering is managed by an electric power steering (EPS) rack. The chassis setup is tuned for urban driving and comfort, delivering a composed, planted ride quality that soaks up road imperfections effectively.
Cabin and Equipment
The cabin features dual 10.25-inch displays running the latest MBUX infotainment system as standard. The setup supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, advanced voice control, and localised navigation systems. The system also supports continuous voice recognition and third-party app downloads via the onboard store. Standard equipment includes 64-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air conditioning vents, keyless entry with push-button start, and a hands-free powered tailgate. In terms of practicality, the rear bench features 40:20:40 split-folding seats that slide fore-and-aft by up to 140 mm alongside a 7-stage backrest recline function. Boot capacity stands at 435 litres in standard guise, expanding to 1,430 litres with the rear seats folded completely flat. A 12-speaker premium sound system is available as an option on higher variants.
Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
The GLA comes well-equipped in the safety and driving assistance department, packing 2 exterior cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 1 millimetre-wave radar unit. Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance comes standard across the range, encompassing Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), a reverse camera, and Active Parking Assist with Parktronic. The top-spec GLA 220 4MATIC can be optioned with the "Driving Assistance Package Plus", which adds Blind Spot Assist, Lane Centring Assist, route-based speed adaptation, traffic jam restart assist, PRE-SAFE collision protection, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Passive safety includes a comprehensive array of airbags and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
Market Performance and Reception
Globally, cumulative sales of the Mercedes-Benz GLA have surpassed the 1,000,000-unit milestone. However, the model has faced steep headwinds in the Chinese market in recent times. Despite an official sticker price ranging from RM299,900 to RM346,900 for the 2025 model year, massive showroom discounts have seen entry-level variants transacting around RM150,000 in certain regions, with high-spec AWD models dropping to around RM180,000. Even with heavy discounting, sales figures have continued to slide—retail volume stood at just 523 units in March 2025 before plunging to 10 units in November 2025. Full-year sales for 2025 closed at approximately 3,400 units.
Market analysts attribute the sluggish uptake to several factors: the 1.3T engine and dual-clutch transmission setup exhibits noticeable low-speed hesitation and jerkiness; the infotainment system's responsiveness and tech features lag behind domestic new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the same price tier; and the 2,729 mm wheelbase offers only modest space, with rear passenger headroom slightly compromised by the sloping roofline. As the entry point into the Mercedes-Benz SUV family, the GLA's struggles highlight the broader growing pains faced by legacy premium marques amidst rapid industry electrification and smart vehicle transformation. From 2026 onwards, Mercedes-Benz plans to roll out the next-generation GLA built on the all-new MMA platform, leading with fully electric (EV) powertrains.
