The Mercedes-Benz EQA is the first compact all-electric SUV under the Mercedes-EQ sub-brand. The model made its initial debut in concept form in 2017, followed by the official launch of the production version in the Chinese market on 19 November 2021. Built on an adapted ICE platform derived from the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the EQA represents a key offering for the brand in the entry-level luxury EV segment. Currently, the facelifted 2025 EQA on sale is offered in a sole variant, the EQA 260, with an official retail price of RM322,000. Positioned as a compact pure electric SUV, its primary rivals include the BMW iX1 and smart #3.

Design Language
On the styling front, the EQA carries forward the progressive design ethos of the Mercedes-EQ family. The front fascia features a "Black Panel" enclosed grille flanked by a continuous full-width LED light bar and sleek headlamp clusters, delivering a bold visual stance. An illuminated Mercedes star emblem is standard across the range. The front bumper is sculpted to balance sportiness with refined elegance. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,463 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width (1,834 mm on select variants), 1,619 mm in height, with a 2,729 mm wheelbase. At the rear, continuous light-strip tail lamps mirror the front lighting design. The vehicle achieves an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. AMG Line bodystyling comes standard across the line-up, with 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels available as options. Inside, the EQA retains the signature Mercedes-Benz cabin architecture, featuring a dual 10.25-inch twin-screen display setup. Interior upholstery options include Black, Cocoa Brown, and a Sage Grey/Black dual-tone scheme. The three-spoke steering wheel and column-mounted DIRECT SELECT gear selector ensure effortless ergonomics.
Powertrain and Performance
The facelifted 2025 EQA 260 is driven by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor in a front-wheel-drive configuration. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 140 kW (around 190 hp) and a peak torque of 380 Nm. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 8.6 seconds, with an electronically governed top speed of 160 km/h. Energy is supplied by a 73.5 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, utilising cells from Farasis Energy. Under CLTC testing standards, it delivers a pure electric range of up to 619 km. DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in 30 to 45 minutes. Energy consumption is rated at 12.7 kWh per 100 km. Earlier production runs also offered the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive EQA 300 4MATIC variant.
Chassis and Handling
The EQA adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The suspension configuration comprises a front MacPherson strut setup and a rear multi-link independent suspension. Steering is managed by an electric power steering system. Braking hardware includes ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear. The chassis setup leans towards ride comfort, though lateral body support remains somewhat modest. Thanks to the low centre of gravity inherited from the GLA-derived architecture, the vehicle exhibits poised, refined road manners under everyday driving conditions. It rides on 235/55 R18 tyres.
Cabin and Equipment
The EQA comes equipped with dual 10.25-inch high-resolution displays serving as the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen. The system runs on the MBUX multimedia interface, featuring voice control, AutoNavi integrated navigation, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. A suite of integrated third-party apps is preloaded, including Tencent Video, Volcano Car Entertainment, Ximalaya, and QQ Music. The upgraded "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant supports dual-command recognition and wake-word-free interactions. Seats are trimmed in synthetic leather, with heated front seats fitted as standard. The front passenger seat features power adjustment. Creature comforts include 64-colour ambient lighting, a hands-free powered tailgate, automatic climate control with the Haze Buster 3.0 air purification system, and a panoramic sliding sunroof. Audiophiles can opt for a Burmester premium surround sound system. Boot space is rated at 340 litres, expandable to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The EQA is equipped with a comprehensive safety suite. Passive safety kit includes front airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and an active bonnet for pedestrian protection. Active safety and driver assistance features are headlined by Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Lane Keeping Assist as standard, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability. The driver assistance suite covers full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Active Brake Assist. In addition, Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Active Parking Assist are standard. Available options include a Head-Up Display (HUD), Lane Centring Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, and Blind Spot Assist.
Market Performance and Overview
Sales performance of the Mercedes-Benz EQA in the Chinese market has remained subdued. Total deliveries stood at 3,360 units in 2024, before dropping further to 1,721 units throughout 2025. Momentum slowed considerably heading into 2026, recording just 2 units sold in February 2026. In the first quarter of 2026, global sales of Mercedes-Benz entry-level models (including the EQA and EQB) declined by 7% year-on-year. To clear inventory, showroom discounts deepened significantly, with price reductions in select areas reaching up to RM152,000, bringing entry prices down to around RM170,000. Industry analysts attribute the lacklustre sales to the packaging constraints of an adapted ICE platform, electric range and smart connectivity features trailing behind segment rivals, as well as aggressive competition from homegrown Chinese NEV manufacturers. Furthermore, Beijing Benz initiated a safety recall in February 2026 for selected EQA units produced between 1 April 2021 and 12 March 2024, citing high-voltage battery manufacturing variations and battery management system software calibration issues. While serving as an entry-level vanguard for the Mercedes-EQ portfolio in the compact EV arena, the EQA's market trajectory underscores the wider challenges traditional premium marques face amid the industry-wide transition to electrification.
