The MG QS is the first full-size 7-seater SUV from SAIC Motor's MG marque. Positioned as a D-segment family SUV, its core selling proposition is a "true 7-seater space"—featuring a three-row seating layout capable of comfortably accommodating adult passengers rather than an occasional "5+2" configuration. Built on SAIC's second-generation GS61 platform, it is the international market twin of the Roewe RX9 sold in China. While known domestically as the Roewe RX9 under the SAIC Roewe badge, it is badged as the MG QS across export markets and named MGS9 in the UK.
The MG QS first made its debut in Australia and New Zealand in mid-2025 before expanding into global markets, including the Middle East and the UK. Serving as a crucial expansion to MG's global SUV portfolio, it goes up directly against mainstream 7-seater SUVs like the Toyota Kluger (Highlander), Kia Sorento, and Hyundai Santa Fe. In the Australian market, it is offered in two variants: Excite (FWD) and Essence (AWD), with on-the-road drive-away prices of RM46,990 and RM50,990 respectively. This undercuts the Toyota Kluger Hybrid by over RM20,000, anchoring a highly competitive value-for-money position.
The exterior styling of the MG QS adopts MG's latest corporate design identity. The front fascia is dominated by an imposing octagonal front grille with parametric diamond-pattern mesh, flanked by integrated LED headlights that deliver an aggressive stance. Its side profile is boxy and functional, characterised by clean, muscular lines. Dimension-wise, the SUV measures 4,983 mm in length, 1,967 mm in width, and 1,778 mm in height, with a 2,915 mm wheelbase—eclipsing the Toyota Kluger (4,966 mm) and Kia Sorento, while sitting just shy of the Hyundai Palisade. At the rear, it gets a full-width LED taillight bar and a concealed exhaust layout beneath the rear bumper. Exterior colour options comprise Oxford White, Black Pearl, Camden Grey, Regal Green, and Cashmere Silver, with 21-inch dual-tone alloy wheels exclusive to the top-spec Essence variant.
Inside, the cabin features a wraparound dashboard layout emphasising modern tech and premium comfort. The dashboard comes standard with dual 12.3-inch displays, while top-spec variants add an additional digital screen to complete a triple-display cockpit. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in satellite navigation, voice control, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Higher-end trims are further equipped with a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, 64-colour ambient lighting, tri-zone automatic climate control, a front wireless smartphone charger, and a hands-free powered tailgate. Upholstery is finished in perforated leather (high-spec), with the front seats offering heating and ventilation functions (high-spec), alongside sliding and reclining second-row seats.
The MG QS is offered with two powertrain configurations: pure petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Petrol Variant (Australia & Middle East Markets) Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 153 kW (approx. 208 PS) and 360 Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrain configurations include Front-Wheel Drive (Excite) and on-demand All-Wheel Drive (Essence). Running on minimum RON 95 petrol, it claims a combined fuel consumption of 8.4 L/100 km for the FWD spec and 8.8 L/100 km for the AWD spec, with AWD CO₂ emissions rated at 198 g/km and a 65-litre fuel tank.
Plug-in Hybrid Variant (UK & European Markets, Badged as MGS9 PHEV) Equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) driving the front wheels. Total system output is rated at 220 kW (approx. 295 PS). Supplying the electric motor is a 24.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, delivering a WLTP pure electric driving range of 100 km and an overall cruising range exceeding 1,000 km on a full tank and full charge. This variant is currently exclusive to selected European markets, with rollouts to other regions yet to be announced.
Underneath, the MG QS rides on an all-round independent suspension setup consisting of front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup. The petrol AWD variant (Essence) features an on-demand all-wheel-drive system with a multi-plate clutch centre differential, alongside an adaptive suspension system that dynamically adjusts damper stiffness to suit road conditions.
For drive modes, the AWD model offers six selectable settings: Normal, Snow, Off-Road, Sport, Custom, and Eco, switchable via the infotainment screen or physical toggles. The steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system tuned to be light at low speeds and reassuringly weighted at cruising speeds. Stopping power comes from ventilated disc brakes all around, with the flagship variant riding on 21-inch rims shod with 255/45 R21 tyres. While official ground clearance figures have not been published, the chassis tuning is clearly skewed towards urban family comfort on paved roads.
The primary highlight of the MG QS is its practical 7-seater cabin. The second-row seats feature fore-aft slide adjustment and reclining backrests, while the third row features a 50:50 split-folding setup that folds completely flush into the floor to create a flat cargo area. Boot volume stands at 203 litres with all seven seats up, expanding to 503 litres with the third row folded down, and reaching a cavernous 1,052 litres with both rear rows folded flat. A "one-touch slide" mechanism on the second row ensures easy ingress and egress to the third row, which accommodates adults under 175 cm for short trips comfortably.
In terms of convenience and comfort, the petrol range comes standard with keyless entry and push-start ignition, tri-zone automatic climate control, rear air-con vents, and a PM2.5 cabin air filter. The range-topping trim adds heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and ambient interior lighting.
The MG QS has earned top crash test safety ratings internationally, securing a full five-star ANCAP safety rating in 2025 alongside a five-star Euro NCAP rating that same year. In ANCAP testing, it scored 84% for Adult Occupant Protection, 85% for Child Occupant Protection, and 74% for Safety Assist.
Passive safety equipment across the range includes seven airbags as standard: dual front, front side, full-length curtain airbags, and a front centre airbag. The body structure utilises a high-strength safety cage construction.
Active safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offer Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities as standard. Key functions include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian detection and junction assist), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) with auto brake, Driver Monitoring System (DMS), and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). The higher trim adds Rear Cross Traffic Braking and a 360-degree surround-view camera (reverse camera and rear parking sensors are standard). The petrol lineup comes with a 7-year/unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty, while electrified powertrain warranties vary by market.
Launching first in Australia and New Zealand in mid-2025, the MG QS marked the brand's entry into the full-size 7-seater SUV space in the region. MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao billed the SUV as a "tailor-made, practical choice for modern Australian families." At launch, the two trims were priced at drive-away figures of RM46,990 and RM50,990, significantly undercutting primary rivals such as the Toyota Kluger Hybrid (from approx. RM71,000) by RM24,000 and the Hyundai Santa Fe (from approx. RM59,000) by RM8,000, establishing itself as one of the most accessible 7-seater SUVs in Australia.
In the UK market, the model debuted in Q2 2026 as the MGS9 PHEV plug-in hybrid with a starting price of around RM34,200. Undercutting segment competitors like the Skoda Kodiaq and Kia Sorento, its main selling points revolve around its 100 km pure EV range and ultra-low combined fuel consumption.
From an expert review standpoint, Australian motoring media widely praised the MG QS for its spacious practicality, generous kit list, and aggressive pricing. CarsGuide awarded it a 7.1/10 rating, noting that while it "lacks some dynamic driving polish, it delivers exceptional value in space and equipment." Drive highlighted an artificial steering feel and budget-feeling trim in certain cabin areas as notable drawbacks. ANCAP also noted the absence of ISOFIX points in the third row, though the overall crash structure easily maintained a five-star rating.
As of mid-2026, the MG QS is on sale across Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and the UK, standing as the flagship SUV in MG's global lineup. Flanked by the MG HS and MG ZS, it completes MG's global SUV portfolio, showcasing SAIC Motor's platform-sharing strategy in the D-segment family SUV space. As the PHEV variant rolls out to more international markets, the MG QS is set to further bolster MG's global electrified SUV footprint.
