The Kia Sorento is a mid-size SUV under Kia. Since its debut in 2002, it has earned widespread global acclaim for its well-rounded product strengths. The current model on sale is the 2026 model year built on the third-generation platform, unveiled in 2025 as the second mid-cycle facelift for this generation. The Sorento was previously sold in the Chinese market as a fully imported model, but is currently discontinued locally.

Positioned as a mid-size SUV, the Sorento offers three seating layouts: 5-seater, 6-seater, and 7-seater, serving as a global strategic model from Kia targeted at family buyers. Its core appeal lies in its balanced cabin space, diverse powertrain options, and continuously upgraded in-car technology. The 2026 Kia Sorento starts from 35.8 million KRW in South Korea, approximately RM186,000; in the US market, the base variant is priced from around USD 32,390 (approximately RM230,000). In selected markets, a plug-in hybrid variant is also available with a starting price of around USD 48,000. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,695 mm (1,700 mm) in height, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase.
The 2026 Sorento incorporates Kia's latest "Opposites United" design philosophy, giving it a bold and dynamic exterior. The front fascia retains the signature "Tiger Face" grille, complemented by vertically stacked LED headlamps. The distinctive "Tiger Eye" daytime running lights feature a "Star Map" lighting signature, delivering standout visual recognisability. The side profile maintains clean lines, accented by chrome trim on the C-pillars for added sophistication. At the rear, vertically arranged LED taillights mirror the front design. The 2026 line-up introduces an "X-Line" variant (formerly known as Gravity), which features blacked-out detailing on the grille, emblems, and alloy wheels for a sportier aesthetic. Hybrid models also receive newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the 2026 Sorento carries over its seamless dual-screen layout integrating the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display. A new four-spoke steering wheel offers an improved grip. Ambient lighting now extends from the dashboard to the front door panels, elevating cabin ambience at night. Selected high-spec variants are expected to feature dual 12.3-inch curved displays.
The 2026 Sorento is available with several powertrain options:
2.5T Turbocharged Petrol Engine: Produces a maximum output of 281 hp. Depending on the variant, it is paired with either an 8-speed automatic or an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
2.2T Turbocharged Diesel Engine: Delivers a maximum output of 194 hp.
1.6T Hybrid (HEV) System: Features a petrol engine rated at 180 hp alongside a 44.7 kW (around 65 hp) electric motor, delivering a combined system output of roughly 227 to 235 hp. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
1.6T Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) System: Delivers a combined maximum output of 261 hp. It offers an all-electric range of approximately 48 km on the EPA cycle, and around 62 km under the WLTC test cycle. This setup is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, backed by a 13.8 kWh battery pack.
The Sorento is built on a monocoque platform, featuring a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The chassis is tuned for comfort, effectively soaking up road imperfections to deliver a smooth and stable ride. The light steering weight makes urban driving and tight manoeuvres effortless.
Both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations are available. AWD variants come equipped with a Terrain Mode selector to handle varying road surfaces. The PHEV model includes standard AWD equipped with a centre differential lock function.
The Sorento’s cabin prioritises practicality and modern technology. High-spec models feature dual 12.3-inch screens combining the fully digital instrument panel and central touchscreen infotainment. The multimedia system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Key convenience equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charger, ventilated and heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Seating options include 6-seater (2+2+2) and 7-seater (2+3+2) layouts. The 6-seater configuration features premium second-row captain seats with a central walk-through aisle for easy third-row access. The second-row seats also feature a one-touch tumble-and-slide mechanism to facilitate ingress and egress for rear passengers. Boot capacity stands at 187 litres behind the third row, expanding up to 1,996 litres with both the second and third rows folded flat.
The Sorento comes comprehensively equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance features, headlined by the SAE Level 2 DRIVE WiSE intelligent safety suite. Key active safety systems include Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle, and junction turning detection, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), Surround View Monitor (SVM), and Rear Occupant Alert (ROA). For passive safety, 7 SRS airbags are fitted as standard, including a front-centre airbag between the driver and front passenger seats.
The Sorento maintains solid sales momentum globally. Since the debut of the fourth-generation model in 2020, it has consistently ranked among the top-selling mid-size SUVs across North America, Europe, and South Korea.
In the Chinese market, the Sorento was previously offered as a fully imported vehicle. The 2018 model was priced between RM226,800 and RM336,800. However, Kia did not officially introduce subsequent models to China following the 2018 model year, leaving the brand's mid-size SUV segment currently vacant in the country.
Automotive media reviews highlight that the Sorento strikes an impressive balance between dimensions, contemporary styling, and onboard technology. The 2.5T unit delivers robust performance, while the hybrid models stand out with excellent fuel efficiency. On the downside, the steering is tuned on the lighter side, offering limited feedback during spirited driving. Nonetheless, as a family-focused mid-size SUV, the Kia Sorento continues to hold a strong competitive edge in the global market thanks to its balanced package, diverse powertrain line-up, and versatile cabin configurations.
