Kia EV9

2026-10-11 03:20:00

The Kia EV9 is a full-size flagship all-electric SUV built on Hyundai Motor Group's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Making its global debut in 2023, the vehicle serves as a pivotal model under Kia's "Plan S" electrification strategy. As the brand's largest and most luxurious electric SUV to date, the EV9 sets out to establish a new benchmark in the global large electric SUV segment with its bold, muscular styling, three-row seating layout, and 800V ultra-fast charging architecture.

Model Overview

Positioned as a full-size pure electric SUV, the EV9 stands as the electric flagship of the Kia line-up. Its key selling proposition blends the generous cabin room and three-row practicality of a full-size SUV with advanced EV technology and rugged aesthetics. In the US market, the 2025 EV9 starts from USD 54,900; in the Chinese market, the estimated starting price is around RM390,000. Dimension-wise, it measures 5,050 mm in length, 2,055 mm in width, and 1,790 mm in height, riding on a 3,100 mm wheelbase. Cabin layouts include a 2+2+2 six-seater and a 2+3+2 seven-seater configuration.

Design Language

While carrying forward Kia's signature "Tiger Nose" design heritage, the EV9's exterior adopts a robust, chiselled silhouette defined by a blanked-off front grille and bold, geometric character lines. The distinctive "Digital Tiger Face" fascia, paired with vertical LED headlamps and Z-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), delivers high visual impact and unmistakable road presence. Down the sides, clean surfacing, a floating roof design, and flush door handles accentuate its contemporary styling. The signature "Digital 3" LED tail lamps create a striking light signature at the rear. Inside, the cabin embraces clean horizontal lines, housing dual 12.3-inch curved panoramic screens alongside a dedicated 5-inch climate control display to deliver a tech-forward cockpit experience.

Powertrain and Performance

Underpinned by the E-GMP architecture, the EV9 is available with several powertrain options. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant features a rear motor delivering 160 kW (around 217 PS). The dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant delivers a combined output of 283 kW (around 385 PS) with peak torque ranging from 600 to 700 Nm. The flagship high-performance EV9 GT pushes total output up to a formidable 374 kW (508 PS), dispatching the 0-96 km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds.

Battery choices include 76.1 kWh and 99.8 kWh packs. On the range front, the GT-Line variant delivers approximately 453 km under WLTP testing, with another GT-Line spec offering up to 505 km; under US EPA testing, range tops out at roughly 489 km. Thanks to its native 800V electrical architecture, the EV9 supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) replenishment in as quick as 24 minutes, or adding around 239 km of range in just 15 minutes.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the EV9 employs a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The high-performance EV9 GT marks the first application of Kia's Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) on a large SUV, complemented by a standard electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD). Multiple drive modes are available, including a dedicated "GT Mode" that primes the vehicle for maximum dynamic response at the touch of a button. Furthermore, the EV9 GT features an innovative Virtual Gear Shift (VGS) system, which replicates the gear shifts and engine acoustics of a traditional ICE vehicle to heighten driver engagement.

Cabin and Features

The cockpit is fitted with twin 12.3-inch curved display screens paired with a 5-inch climate control panel. Higher-grade variants gain a 12-inch Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD) and a 14-speaker Meridian premium sound system. In terms of seating, the second-row captain chairs feature 90-degree and 180-degree swivel functions, facilitating flexible face-to-face seating with third-row passengers, complete with zero-gravity relaxation modes and ottoman leg rests. The vehicle also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging capability, delivering up to 3.68 kW of external power.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The EV9 boasts a comprehensive suite of safety and advanced driver assistance systems. Passive safety is headlined by 10 airbags, contributing to its five-star US NHTSA safety rating. On the active safety front, the vehicle packs an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite spanning 25 functions, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist. Semi-autonomous driving is supported via Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) with lane-change assist, while the GT-Line variant offers digital side mirrors in place of conventional door mirrors. Additionally, the EV9 is engineered with Level 3 autonomous driving capability and features Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Market Performance and Reception

The EV9 has enjoyed significant commercial traction in global markets, particularly in North America. In the first 11 months of 2024, cumulative US deliveries exceeded 20,000 units, cementing its status as Kia's best-selling EV model. By the end of 2024, global cumulative sales had surpassed 50,000 units, with international markets outside South Korea accounting for roughly 90%. However, impacted by policy adjustments to US EV tax incentives, EV9 sales recorded 15,051 units in 2025, representing a 32% year-on-year contraction.

Automotive media reviews highlight that the EV9 delivers strong global competitiveness courtesy of its striking design, cavernous cabin space, 800V fast charging, and robust powertrain output (particularly on the GT variant). Nevertheless, critics have noted the plasticky texture on select interior trim pieces, alongside brand perception and localisation hurdles in the Chinese market. As the flagship halo of Kia's electric revolution, the EV9 not only demonstrates the marque's EV engineering prowess, but also offers a compelling "large-sized, high-performance, fast-charging" proposition in the global large SUV arena.
