2026-10-05 12:00:00

Model Overview

The Kia EV3 is an all-electric B-segment SUV from South Korean carmaker Kia. Officially unveiled on 23 May 2024, it stands as the smallest and most accessible entry-level model within Kia's dedicated EV line-up. Built on the Hyundai Motor Group's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV3 utilizes a 400V electrical architecture. In terms of exterior dimensions, it measures 4,300 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm. For the South Korean domestic market, the EV3 is offered in three trim variants—Air, Earth, and GT-Line—with prices ranging between KRW 42,080,000 and KRW 51,080,000 (equivalent to around RM217,000 to RM264,000). The electric crossover has already gone on sale in South Korea and across Europe, with its North American debut slated for the 2026 New York International Auto Show.

Design Language

The EV3 inherits Kia's signature  "Opposites United"  design philosophy seen on the flagship EV9. Up front, it features a clean and minimalist aesthetic highlighted by the Star Map LED lighting signatures, where distinctive angular headlamps integrate a full-width light bar with a 7-shaped motif for unmistakable road presence. Down the sides, the crossover features a boxy and compact silhouette with flush-fitting door handles, while the rear door handles are integrated seamlessly into the C-pillars, helping it achieve an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just Cd 0.263. At the rear, distinctive Y-shaped tail lamps are paired with a prominent roof spoiler, lending it an overtly futuristic stance. Inside, the cabin features Kia's latest family layout, boasting a dual 12.3-inch widescreen display (comprising a fully digital instrument cluster and a central infotainment touchscreen) flanked by a dedicated 5-inch climate control screen, offering a combined digital interface spanning nearly 30 inches. Steering wheel options include a two-spoke design on standard variants and a sporty three-spoke wheel on the GT-Line. In line with modern eco-conscious trends, sustainable materials such as recycled fabrics and recycled plastics are used extensively throughout the interior.

Powertrain and Performance

Underpinned by a 400V architecture, the standard EV3 is powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that delivers 150 kW (approx. 204 PS)  and 283 Nm of peak torque. It completes the century sprint (0-100 km/h) in 7.5 seconds, on to a top speed of 170 km/h. Battery choices comprise a 58.3 kWh pack for the Standard Range and an 81.4 kWh pack for the Long Range. On the WLTP test cycle, the Standard Range delivers up to 435 km, while the Long Range achieves between 600 km and 604 km on a single charge. When hooked up to a DC fast charger, a 10% to 80% state of charge can be completed in just 31 minutes. The crossover also comes with i-Pedal 3.0 one-pedal drive, which works across all regenerative braking levels, even in reverse.

Chassis and Handling

Thanks to the dedicated E-GMP platform, the EV3 features a well-engineered foundation. The chassis setup leans towards ride comfort, with European-spec variants receiving market-specific suspension tuning engineered to absorb uneven, pockmarked road surfaces with composure. Base models ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, while the range-topping GT-Line rides on 19-inch wheels. Power is delivered to the tarmac via a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration on standard models. Drivers can tailor the driving experience via multi-level regenerative braking, ranging from seamless coasting to full one-pedal operation. An upcoming high-performance GT variant will feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup pushing out 215 kW (approx. 288 PS) , lowering the 0-100 km/h sprint time to 5.7 seconds, alongside dedicated electronic controlled suspension (ECS), a virtual gear-shifting system, and active sound design.

Cabin and Equipment

The EV3's modern cabin is anchored by the dual 12.3-inch panoramic display and the 5-inch climate touch panel. The infotainment operates on Kia's latest connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system, complete with AI-powered voice commands, webOS streaming services, and built-in gaming capabilities. In terms of kit, it is available with a head-up display (HUD), a Harman Kardon premium sound system, heated, ventilated, and memory driver's seat, a heated steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charger, and configurable ambient lighting. A sliding centre console incorporates a slide-out tray table/work surface alongside a 230V household power outlet. For practicality, the rear boot provides 460 litres of luggage capacity, complemented by a 25-litre front luggage compartment (frunk). The rear seats can also be folded flat to maximise cargo capacity. The entire EV3 range comes standard with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power capability.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the EV3 is comprehensively equipped with Kia's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist. Higher-spec models feature the sophisticated Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2) —which integrates real-time driver monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane centring assist. In Euro NCAP's assisted driving assessments, the EV3's HDA2 system secured the top  "Very Good" rating, scoring 74 points for Assistance Competence and 88 points for Safety Backup (162 points overall), making it the highest-scoring model across Hyundai Motor Group in this assessment. Furthermore, the crossover features Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) , allowing the vehicle to autonomously steer into and out of tight parking bays. In terms of passive safety, it is fitted with driver and front passenger airbags, front and rear side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and knee airbags for both front occupants.

Market Performance and Reception

The Kia EV3 has garnered strong sales momentum since hitting the South Korean market in August 2024. In the first quarter of 2026, global deliveries of the EV3 reached 17,878 units, making up 64% of Kia's total EV sales—a massive 153% surge over Q4 2025. Over in the UK, the EV3 quickly became an instant hit, topping the passenger EV sales charts in Q1 2026. The crossover earned a double victory at the  "2025 Korea Car of the Year"  awards, taking home the overall title as well as the "Electric SUV" category crown, while also making the final shortlist for the prestigious 2025 World Car of the Year. It also clinched overall first place in a comprehensive group test conducted by an authoritative German automotive publication. Globally, Kia aims to achieve cumulative sales of over 1,600,000 units for the EV3 by 2030. While the EV3 has not been officially launched in mainland China yet, industry sources suggest it could eventually be locally assembled by joint venture Yueda Kia. In its segment, the EV3 goes head-to-head with rivals such as the BYD Yuan UP and smart #1. As the entry-level offering in Kia's dedicated EV portfolio, the EV3 cements its competitive edge in the mainstream electric crossover segment on the back of its 600 km-class electric driving range, comprehensive active safety tech, and proven E-GMP platform credentials.
