Model Overview

The JMC Yuhu EV is the first all-electric pick-up truck under JMC, officially launched in December 2019. Developed based on the ICE-powered JMC Yuhu 7 platform, it is positioned in the commercial and passenger EV pick-up market, catering to fleet operators and private buyers who prioritise low running costs and strong payload capability. At its initial launch, two variants were introduced, priced between RM248,000 and RM268,000 before subsidies. The lineup has since expanded, with the 2022 iteration introducing a box-body variant starting from RM316,800. As of 2025, the retail price range for on-sale models has expanded to RM316,800–RM383,800, offering multiple configurations including open-bed, box-body, and multi-purpose passenger variants.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the JMC Yuhu EV carries over the rugged design DNA of the Yuhu 7. Up front, it features a bold black radiator grille detailed with horizontal silver louvres, accented with sky-blue trim to highlight its EV credentials. The angular headlamps, paired with a lower silver skid plate and fog lamp enclosures, deliver an assertive road presence. Along the sides, flared front and rear wheel arches alongside a dark sports bar reinforce its utilitarian, go-anywhere stance. Around the back, it features prominent vertical tail lamp clusters and a large inverted trapezoidal number plate recess.

In terms of dimensions, the 4x2 LX variant measures 5,375 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, while the 4x2 LX (Category M1) stands taller at 2,000 mm, both sharing a 3,085 mm wheelbase. Cargo bed dimensions are 1,475 × 1,475 × 500 mm and 1,475 × 1,475 × 1,000 mm respectively. The 2022 box-body model expands the cargo enclosure to 1,530 × 1,540 × 1,155 mm.

Inside, the cabin sports a dark colour theme with chrome accents on the centre console, air-cond vents, and three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. The dashboard adopts a clean, symmetrical layout with logically arranged physical controls. The overall cabin ambiance remains rugged and functional, yet elevated with tasteful details.

Powertrain and Performance

The JMC Yuhu EV is powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Early variants deliver a maximum output of 120 kW (163 PS) and 280 Nm of peak torque, while certain later models boast a nominal peak torque rating of up to 800 Nm. Power is sent to the wheels via a single-speed EV transmission. Performance-wise, the standard variant completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 15 seconds, with the Category M1 variant clocking 12.5 seconds. Top speed is rated at 120 km/h.

For energy storage, early versions are equipped with a 66 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack supplied by Cenat, before transitioning to CATL-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, which increased the battery capacity to 85.89 kWh. In terms of driving range, early models delivered 320 km and 335 km under the NEDC cycle, whereas the 2022 updates lifted the CLTC-rated range to 380 km. Charging-wise, it supports both AC and DC charging; a 0–80% DC fast charge takes approximately 1 hour, while a full AC charge requires around 10 hours. On select 2022 variants, the DC fast charging time is further reduced to 45 minutes (0.75 hours).

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the JMC Yuhu EV is built on a robust ladder-frame chassis featuring a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. Suspension duties are handled by a double-wishbone independent setup at the front and heavy-duty leaf springs at the rear. Steering is assisted by an electric power steering (EPS) system, while braking power comes from all-round disc brakes. The truck is fitted with 265/65 R17 tyres, offering an approach angle of 28°–28.5° and a departure angle of 24°–25°. Rated payload capacity ranges between 0.75 and 1.065 tonnes depending on the variant.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside the cabin, the JMC Yuhu EV comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit integrating multimedia, navigation, and vehicle telemetry displays. Also standard is the JMC Smart Travel T-Box telematics system, which supports GPS tracking, remote door lock/unlock, vehicle status monitoring, and self-diagnostics. Comfort and convenience features include a multi-function steering wheel, ergonomic leather seats, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding wing mirrors. The air conditioning system also incorporates a PM2.5 cabin air filter. Additionally, select 2022 variants support bi-directional power capabilities, including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the JMC Yuhu EV comes standard with dual front airbags for the driver and front passenger, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). Additional safety and convenience gear includes a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), child safety locks, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Driver assistance features include Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. In terms of warranty, the truck is backed by a 3-year/60,000 km manufacturer vehicle warranty alongside a 5-year/200,000 km warranty for the core EV powertrain, with the high-voltage battery pack covered for 6 years or 300,000 km.

Market Performance and Verdict

As JMC’s pioneer entry into the all-electric pick-up segment, the Yuhu EV garnered solid initial traction backed by the brand's established commercial vehicle heritage. In 2024, with domestic new energy pick-up sales surging by 68% year-on-year, the Yuhu EV was ranked alongside the Changan Hunter K50, Maxus T90 EV, and others as mainstream players in the pure electric pick-up segment. On the consumer front, owners generally praise its commanding road presence, generous cabin space (especially rear legroom), and versatile multi-purpose practicality. On the flip side, common owner feedback points out its relatively high price point and limited promotional discounts, a somewhat basic interior layout with limited storage cubbies, and perceptible electric motor whine under load. A few owners have also reported reliability concerns such as braking system faults and cabin water seepage. Overall, the JMC Yuhu EV serves as a credible pioneer in the electric pick-up segment, backed by the proven Yuhu 7 platform, CATL LFP battery technology, and an expanding variant lineup; nonetheless, its premium pricing and build quality consistency remain key areas for continued refinement.
