JETTA VS8

2026-10-06 23:50:00

The JETTA VS8 is a D-segment SUV under FAW-Volkswagen's JETTA marque, officially launched on 5 September 2025. Underpinned by Volkswagen's MQB Evo platform, the model is offered in three variants with introductory launch prices ranging from RM95,900 to RM109,900. On 28 April 2026, the JETTA VS8 Black Knight Edition was introduced as the new range-topping variant, carrying an official recommended retail price of RM137,900 and an introductory price of RM112,900. The JETTA VS8 goes up against Chinese domestic brand rivals such as the Chery Tiggo 8 and Haval H6.

Design Language

The JETTA VS8 debuts the brand's latest "Overlord Armour" design philosophy. Up front, it features a frameless "Battle Shield Grille" with a three-dimensional parametric mesh insert; a full-width LED light bar connects to V-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) integrated into the headlamp clusters, while the front JETTA emblem illuminates in tandem. The side profile gets clean, contoured lines, with blacked-out B-, C-, and D-pillars creating a floating roof effect; conventional door handles are retained. At the rear, full-width LED taillights feature V-shaped position lamps at either end, echoing the front fascia. Dimension-wise, the SUV measures 4,629 mm in length, 1,851 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a 2,731 mm wheelbase. A variety of exterior colours is available, while the Black Knight Edition gains a full gloss-black exterior styling kit as standard. Inside, the cabin features a two-tone theme with contrast stitching, complemented by a steering column-mounted electronic gear selector akin to Volkswagen's ID. family.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the JETTA VS8 line-up is Volkswagen's EA211 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Output is rated at 110 kW (150 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. Drive is sent through an Aisin six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.95 L/100 km on the WLTC cycle, with a claimed top speed of 175 km/h. All variants come in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration, requiring RON 95 petrol as minimum. Notably, the VS8 carries over its powertrain wholesale from the JETTA VS7, which can feel somewhat sluggish under full passenger loads or during sudden kickdowns.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the JETTA VS8 features front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link (four-link) independent suspension setup. Having an all-wheel independent suspension layout gives it a notable edge against rivals in this price bracket. Ride and handling tuning preserves the taut, planted feel typical of Continental marques, delivering confident composure and agility in the moose test and through tight twisties. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, while stopping power comes from front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The entry-level model rides on 225/55 R17 tyres, while the mid-to-high specs upgrade to 225/50 R18 rubbers.

Cabin and Equipment

The interior represents the VS8's most substantial upgrade, headlined by a standard 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch floating central touchscreen across the range. Infotainment duties are managed by the "Yuexing OS" intelligent cockpit, deeply integrated with the Doubao and DeepSeek AI large language models. The system supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates, voice command, HUAWEI HiCar, and Carlink smartphone mirroring. Multi-colour ambient lighting comes standard across the board, while higher-spec trims add a 50W Qi wireless smartphone charger. The driver's seat benefits from six-way power adjustment and four-way lumbar support, alongside seat heating functions. Boot space is rated at 654 litres in standard guise, expanding to 1,913 litres with the rear seats folded flat. A total of 25 storage cubbies are dotted across the cabin. The Black Knight Edition further adds digital key access and smartphone remote vehicle telematics for the first time.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the JETTA VS8 is built around a body shell incorporating 80% high-strength steel. 9 airbags are fitted as standard across the range. In terms of active safety, mid-to-high variants are equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), packing features such as Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection/Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). A 360-degree surround-view monitor with a transparent underfloor view is standard across the board. Additionally, all microchips and electronic components are automotive-grade, certified to operate reliably from -40°C to 150°C.

Market Review and Verdict

The JETTA VS8 represents the fifth production model from JETTA since it was spun off as a standalone marque, serving as an essential flagship to push the brand upmarket. Its chief selling points lie in its Volkswagen MQB Evo-derived German engineering, an attractive entry price starting from RM95,900, an AI-enhanced digital cockpit anchored by the 14.6-inch screen, as well as standard 360-degree cameras and 9 airbags across the range. On the flip side, some compromises remain obvious: the 1.4 TSI unit lacks reserve punch when fully loaded or driven hard; the VS8 is barely distinguishable from the older VS7 in dimensions (body length is up by just 5 mm, wheelbase differs by 1 mm) and powertrain, prompting some local motoring media to label it as merely a facelifted and rebadged VS7; cabin trim materials and smart cabin finesse still lag behind similarly priced Chinese rivals; and a pronounced rear transmission tunnel hump eats into middle-passenger footwell space. On balance, the JETTA VS8 tackles the RM100,000 D-segment SUV market with a blend of "Continental engineering and accessible pricing", offering a practical alternative for family buyers seeking proven European underpinnings on a budget.
