JAC JS6

2026-09-22 10:00:01

Model Overview

The JAC JS6 is a C-segment compact SUV developed by JAC Group (JAC Motors) on its MIS Haoxue modular platform, engineered primarily for global export markets and officially unveiled worldwide on 14 October 2022. It is essentially the overseas export counterpart of the domestic Chinese market's "Sehol QX". Positioned as a youthful, tech-driven compact SUV, the JS6 fills a vital product niche for the JAC brand in international markets.

Under the bonnet, the SUV is predominantly powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, offering outputs between 174 PS and 184 PS, paired with either a 6-speed or 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. A newer JS6 PHEV plug-in hybrid variant has also joined the lineup. As a global strategic product, the JS6 is currently on sale in multiple countries, including Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the JAC JS6 is sculpted around the brand's "Starship Aesthetics" design philosophy, projecting a futuristic and sporty demeanour. The front fascia adopts a split-tier layout, featuring a sleek full-width chrome bar connecting the split LED headlamps, sitting above a bold trapezoidal lower radiator grille for instant road presence. Down the sides, a sweeping fastback roofline is paired with a rising character line and 18-inch alloy wheels, giving the SUV an athletic, poised stance. At the rear, full-width LED tail lights feature a "Big Dipper"-inspired internal lighting signature that complements the front lighting architecture.

Inside, the JS6 embraces a "Minimalist Luxury" design ethos, striking a balance between cutting-edge technology and everyday practicality. The focal point of the cabin is a floating 24.6-inch dual-screen display (comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen), anchoring a high-tech cockpit environment. Soft-touch materials are applied generously across the cabin, enhanced by contrast stitching for a refined finish. A rotary electronic gear selector and continuous horizontal air-conditioning vents further elevate the cabin's modern ambience. Dimension-wise, the JS6 measures 4,605 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,700 mm in height with a 2,720 mm wheelbase, providing a roomy cabin alongside an expandable boot capacity ranging from 670 litres to 1,080 litres.

Powertrain & Performance

The petrol-powered JS6 is driven by a 1.5-litre TGDI turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Depending on market-specific tuning, maximum output ranges between 174 PS (approx. 128 kW) and 184 PS (approx. 135 kW), with peak torque rated at 280 Nm or 300 Nm. This engine delivers its maximum torque across a broad band between 1,600 and 3,500 rpm, providing responsive low-end pull for urban driving. Gearbox choices comprise a 6-speed or 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT), balancing swift gear changes with low-speed smoothness. Top speed is rated at 180 km/h, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time clocking in between 9.8 and 10.1 seconds. In terms of efficiency, combined fuel consumption is rated at approximately 7.4 litres/100 km under the WLTC test cycle.

In line with the automotive industry's electrification push, JAC also rolled out the JS6 PHEV plug-in hybrid. This variant pairs an 81 kW petrol engine with a 150 kW electric drive motor. It delivers a total cruising range of up to 1,150 km and an all-electric range of 120 km, achieving a combined fuel economy of just 0.9 litres/100 km in charge-sustaining mode. In standard hybrid mode with low battery reserves, fuel consumption stands at 5.3 litres/100 km, while the 0-100 km/h sprint is dispatched in a brisk 7.3 seconds.

Chassis & Handling

Under the skin, the JAC JS6 comes exclusively in a front-wheel-drive configuration. The suspension setup consists of front MacPherson struts and an independent rear multi-link layout. The multi-link rear setup stands out as a notable advantage in its price bracket, maintaining optimal tyre contact and wheel articulation to boost cornering stability and rear passenger comfort. Media reviews have also commended its chassis tuning for absorbing road undulations and suppressing harsh vibrations. Additionally, the electric power steering offers three selectable weighting levels, enabling drivers to toggle between Sport, Standard, and Comfort modes to suit diverse road conditions and driving preferences.

Cabin & Equipment

Cockpit intelligence and comfort appointments are among the JS6's core highlights. Taking centre stage is the floating 24.6-inch dual-screen setup that integrates digital vehicle instrumentation and infotainment, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support for seamless smartphone connectivity. The infotainment unit also supports intelligent voice control and online navigation. In terms of comfort amenities, higher-spec variants come equipped with a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable and heated driver's seat, keyless entry, and push-button start. A 64-colour ambient lighting system, Qi wireless smartphone charging pad, and an 8-speaker sound system further craft an inviting, tech-centric cabin atmosphere.

Safety & Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the JS6 is engineered with an extensive suite of passive and active protection systems. In terms of passive safety, high-strength steel makes up 70% of the body structure to meet C-NCAP five-star crash safety standards, backed by standard dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags across the range.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) serve as a primary selling point, offering up to Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities on upper-tier variants. Available active safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). A 360-degree surround-view camera system and front/rear parking sensors are also standard on high-grade variants, making parking and low-speed tight manoeuvres effortless. Notably, the AEB system actively detects preceding vehicles and pedestrians to initiate automatic braking in critical situations, while ACC modulates vehicle speed and maintains a safe following distance, significantly reducing driver fatigue during highway cruising.

Market Performance & Outlook

As a key strategic export for JAC, the JS6 commenced its global sales campaign in October 2022, securing over 500 customer bookings on its debut day in Mexico. In terms of overseas pricing, the JS6 sits at a higher market tier than its domestic equivalent, retailing in Mexico for approximately RM208,600 to RM255,100, and in Russia for around RM220,000 to RM225,000. For its domestic counterpart, the Sehol QX, market reception in China was generally positive, earning praise for its sharp styling, spacious interior, and smart connected features. From 2023 onwards, the JS6 expanded into Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan with refreshed model iterations, followed by the introduction of the JS6 PHEV to spearhead JAC's new energy vehicle drive in regions like Central Asia.

However, the vehicle has seen minimal direct retail presence in its domestic Chinese market. With the "Sehol" marque sidelined in China, the JS6 has faced mounting challenges abroad, while its domestic counterpart suffered from limited market visibility. Coupled with JAC Motors' broader sales challenges heading into 2025, the export outlook for the JS6 remains demanding. In summary, the JS6 functions essentially as an "export-bespoke model" developed by JAC Motors during a transitional phase, leveraging its modular platform efficiencies to bolster traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) exports. Its ultimate success will directly determine whether JAC can defend its global market footprint and secure a vital operational runway for its transition toward full electrification.
