The Hyper HL is the flagship SUV from Hyper, the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) marque under GAC Group. It officially went on sale on 12 April 2025 during the "2025 GAC Tech Day & Hyper HL Launch Event". Positioned as an "intelligent new luxury family SUV" and styled around a "land yacht" design ethos, the model is available with two powertrain options (fully electric and range-extended) and two seating layouts (5-seater and 6-seater) across 8 variants, with official price tags ranging from RM269,800 to RM319,800. Among these, the range-extended (REEV) line-up comprises 4 variants priced between RM269,800 and RM299,800, whilst the all-electric (BEV) version retails from RM269,800 to RM319,800. Underpinned by GAC's Xingling Electronic and Electrical Architecture and an 800V high-voltage platform, the Hyper HL is also the debut production model to feature the GAC Xingling Safety Protection System.

Design Language

Penned by the GAC Los Angeles Design Center, the exterior of the Hyper HL embodies a distinctive "land yacht" concept. Up front, it sports a closed-off grille flanked by split headlamp units and signature triple vertical daytime running light (DRL) signatures; the front fascia also integrates an intelligent dot-matrix interactive lighting panel that supports customisable displays. Along the sides, the sleek, elongated silhouette is defined by sculpted surfaces and 21-inch paddle-style alloy wheels, complete with self-levelling floating wheel hub caps that keep the Hyper emblem upright even on the move. At the rear, full-width taillight bars are accented by vertical light elements on either side.

In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 5,126 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, and 1,750 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,088 mm. Its aerodynamic profile yields an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.268 Cd. Four exterior paint shades are offered: Nautical Blue, Ice Rock Grey, Deep Sea Green, and Night Shadow Black. Inside, the yacht-inspired wraparound cockpit features generous soft-touch materials, paired with century-old real shadow wood veneers and a full Alcantara suede roof lining. Buyers can choose from three interior themes: Chibi Danxia Red, Iceland Black Sand, and Desert Sand Brown.

Powertrain & Performance

The Hyper HL is offered in both pure electric (BEV) and range-extended (REEV) configurations, both engineered on GAC's premium EP electric architecture with an 800V high-voltage system.

The Pure Electric (BEV) version is available in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) setups. The RWD variant features a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 250 kW, juiced by either a 95.9 kWh or 108.35 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, delivering a CLTC driving range of up to 750 km. The dual-motor AWD variant completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds. Charging is boosted by 800V/5C ultra-fast charging capabilities, enabling a 265 km range top-up in just 5 minutes.

The Range-Extended (REEV) version utilises the Xingyuan Range-Extender System, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine generator with electric drive motors. The dedicated generator churns out a continuous output of 85 kW, mated to a 60 kWh CATL Freevoy battery pack. The 0–100 km/h benchmark is clocked at 7.5 seconds for the 2WD model and 5.8 seconds for the AWD model. It boasts a CLTC pure electric range of 350 km and a combined cruising range exceeding 1,200 km on a full tank and charge. Real-world WLTC fuel consumption in depleted-battery mode is rated at 6.8 L/100 km, while its fuel-to-electricity efficiency stands at an impressive 3.73 kWh/L—the highest among REEV models in its class.

Chassis & Handling

The Hyper HL marks the debut of the Hyper Intelligent Digital Chassis. Its running gear employs a high-end suspension setup consisting of front double wishbones and a rear multi-link (five-link) independent layout, with adaptive air suspension and SDC intelligent damping control shock absorbers fitted as standard across the entire range. The air suspension provides 100 mm of height adjustability. By scanning the road surface 1,000 times per second and adjusting damping rates 100 times per second, the digital chassis proactively fine-tunes stiffness for road imperfections. Track and road evaluations reveal supple bump absorption over consecutive rumble strips in Comfort mode, while Sport mode tautens the setup significantly, restricting body roll to just 7.2° during 60 km/h cornering maneuvers. The body-in-white incorporates a 78% aluminium alloy and high-strength steel blend, achieving a torsional rigidity of 38,000 Nm/deg—a 25% uplift over rival models.

Cabin & Equipment

The digital cockpit of the Hyper HL is highlighted by a 17.3-inch 3K HD touchscreen infotainment display, an 8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster, and a massive 27-inch wide head-up display (W-HUD). Driven by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P processor, the system wakes in just 2.88 seconds and switches apps in 0.19 seconds. The infotainment suite deeply integrates the GAC AI Large Model and DeepSeek-R1 Large Model, supporting over 10 rounds of multi-turn natural dialogue alongside voiceprint-recognised personalised settings. Rear passengers are treated to a 17.3-inch entertainment display, enabling six-screen interactivity across the cabin.

On the comfort front, the second-row captains are dual zero-gravity seats inspired by NASA's 127.5° neutral body posture, offering 12-way power adjustment, one-touch zero-gravity recline, and an 18-point hot-stone massage function. Dual integrated armrest touchscreens provide seamless seat controls. Standard equipment across all variants includes soft-close doors, an on-board dual-temperature cooling/warming fridge, a 24-speaker ADIGO SOUND audio system, a heat-insulated panoramic glass roof, dual 50W wireless smartphone fast chargers, independent rear climate control, and rear foldable seatback tray tables. Boot capacity starts at 313 litres, expanding to a generous 930 litres with the third-row seats folded flat.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

As the pioneer model for the GAC Xingling Safety Protection System, the Hyper HL delivers a comprehensive safety umbrella covering crash protection, ADAS, night-time driving, battery integrity, and detail ergonomics. Passive safety is anchored by an ultra-rigid Titan cage-type steel-aluminium hybrid architecture (78% high-strength materials), achieving a 5-star safety rating in the 2024 C-NCAP crash tests. Full-length 2.83-metre side curtain airbags protect all rows. The traction battery benefits from a three-tiered "thermal insulation, heat resistance, and fire prevention" safeguard. Making its industry debut is the "Eye of the Dark Night" military-grade night vision system, which substantially enhances low-light object detection. Other detail safety touches include real-time driving hazard warnings, active pre-tensioning seatbelts, second-row rear-approaching vehicle alerts, and full anti-pinch sensors.

For autonomous and assisted driving, roof-mounted LiDAR and the NVIDIA Orin-X computing platform come standard across the range. Backed by GAC's GSD high-level smart driving suite and NDA 4.0 Navigation Driving Assist, it supports mapless Urban Navigation Assist and Highway Navigation Assist, covering over 99% of driving scenarios. The system handles end-to-end "parking-spot-to-parking-spot" pilot driving, automated transit through highway toll gantries, ultra-narrow parking bays, and automated cruising on unpaved gravel tracks. Automated parking features include 3 km long-range memory parking and remote automated parking via smartphone.

Market Performance & Verdict

Following its launch, the Hyper HL experienced lower-than-anticipated sales traction. It recorded 4,464 deliveries throughout 2025, with August 2025 seeing only 249 units sold, before dwindling into single digits per month by early 2026. Automotive industry analysts note that despite solid technical merits and strong state-owned manufacturer backing, subdued brand recognition and intense price wars in the segment hindered its market breakthrough.

From a product standpoint, starting at an accessible RM269,800, the Hyper HL offers segment-busting standard kit including LiDAR, the Orin-X chip, air suspension, and dual zero-gravity executive seats. Real-world media trials verified high electric range retention, a frugal 6.8 L/100 km depleted-battery consumption, and a swift 5.7-second 0–100 km/h sprint for the REEV variant, alongside class-leading infotainment responsiveness and a 98.5% voice recognition accuracy in noisy cabin environments. Motoring reviewers widely praised its powertrain efficiency, generous packaging, and intelligent safety envelope. In summary, the Hyper HL packages its core proposition of "land yacht styling, dual-powertrain flexibility, standard LiDAR, adaptive air suspension, and zero-gravity seating" into an undeniably competitive family SUV within the RM260,000–RM320,000 bracket, though elevating brand prestige and showroom footfall remains its biggest uphill task.
