Overview

Ginetta is a professional race car and sports car manufacturer originating from the United Kingdom. Founded by the four Walklett brothers in 1958 in Suffolk, England, it is currently part of the LNT Group, with its headquarters located in Garforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire. The brand is renowned for producing various racing cars and limited-production road supercars. Its product line covers a complete racing ladder, ranging from entry-level formula cars to LMP1 prototype cars. The brand logo features a stylized initial 'G' combined with the full English name. Ginetta's core philosophy revolves around "Pure race cars built from scratch" and an "Uncompromised driver experience." It is recognized as one of the few top-tier hand-built manufacturers in the British racing industry, standing alongside prestigious sports car brands such as Lotus and Morgan.

History

Ginetta was co-founded by Bob, Ivor, Trevers, and Douglas Walklett. The first model, the G2, utilized Ford parts and a self-developed aluminum alloy body structure, with limited production of 100 units. Subsequently, all brand models followed the naming convention of 'G' plus a number and have remained active in European racing events.

In the 1960s, Ginetta gradually established a brand positioning focused on amateur racing cars. Starting in 1962, it began providing track-entry cars for amateur drivers. In the 1980s, the brand navigated financial difficulties through the sales of the GRS Tora model. In 1989, the founding family members retired, and management of the brand was handed over to Ian Phaff. During the 1990s, the brand underwent a series of ownership changes and struggled to maintain its position amidst intense market competition.

In 2005, the company was officially acquired by the LNT Group, owned by Yorkshire entrepreneur and Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race champion Lawrence Tomlinson. Under Tomlinson's leadership, the brand embarked on a path of revival, expanding its factory scale and broadening its customer base. In 2006, the brand launched the G50 concept car. The following year, it returned to the track with the G50 Cup single-spec racing series. In 2008, to commemorate the factory's 50th anniversary, Ginetta officially mass-produced the G50 series. That same year, the Ginetta G50 race car won the GT2 class championship at the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race.

In 2021, the brand established Ginetta North America. By acquiring the US-based TMI AutoTech, it set up sales, distribution, manufacturing, and engineering centers in the USA. In 2025, Ginetta returned to the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race after several years and secured the brand's first Le Mans championship in the Pro-Am LMP3 class. In the summer of 2025, the operation of the brand's GT2 race car customer racing series was taken over by the world-class SRO Motorsports Group. In 2026, Ginetta celebrated its 65th anniversary with grand events at the Silverstone Circuit.

Product Portfolio

Ginetta's product line is centered on race cars, supplemented by a small number of limited-run road supercars.

Ginetta Junior Championship entry-level racing is for 14-year-old drivers; G40 series is the brand entry race car; G50 series launched in 2008, with the first batch of 30 units sold; G55 series is the advanced version of G50; G56 GTP8 is equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 engine (390 hp), weighs approx 1255 kg, dedicated for North American GT America single-brand series; G56 GT2 made its competitive debut and reached the podium in the 2025 Barcelona GT2 European Series, planned to officially participate in the GT2 European Series and North American GT America Series in the 2026 season; G61-LT-P1 is the brand's top-spec LMP1 class race car, whose aerodynamic design influenced subsequent road car models.

Supercar: G60 launched in 2011, redeveloped based on the Farbio GTS chassis, using a tubular frame and carbon fiber body, vehicle weight only 1080 kg, equipped with a Ford 3.7-liter V6 engine (310 hp), 0-100 km/h acceleration approx 4 seconds, limited production of 50 units. Akula supercar debuted in prototype form at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, officially released the production version in 2024. The brand claims Akula means 'Shark' in Russian. The car uses a carbon fiber monocoque chassis (vehicle weight 1190 kg), equipped with a 6.4-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine (600 hp, 670 Nm), 0-100 km/h acceleration 2.9 seconds, top speed 290 km/h, limited to 20 units, starting price £275,000, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Lawrence Tomlinson acquiring the brand.

Market Performance

Ginetta is a niche manufacturer focused on racing cars and limited-production supercars, with very limited publicly available sales data. Since 2001, only 189 Ginetta units have been registered for road use in the UK. In 2025, the brand received multiple positive signals: the Junior series welcomed the highest number of participating drivers in its history; participation slots in the North American market increased significantly; and Ginetta teams returned to Le Mans after several years, winning the LMP3 Pro-Am class championship.

Technology and Innovation

Carbon Fiber Monocoque Chassis: Akula supercar uses a full carbon fiber monocoque chassis and carbon fiber floor structure, vehicle weight only 1190 kg, weight only 78 kg heavier than Mazda MX-5 RF. GT2 race car also uses a full carbon fiber body, controlling vehicle weight below 1250 kg. Brand's early G60 models used a lightweight combination of tubular frame and carbon fiber body.

Powertrain: Ginetta possesses engine self-development capability. GT2 race car is equipped with a self-developed 6.3-liter supercharged V8 engine, using an aluminum block and dry sump design, maximum power up to 800 hp. Akula is equipped with a 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, 60-degree angle design, aluminum block designed and manufactured by Ginetta, outputting 600 hp. G60 is equipped with a Ford 3.7-liter V6 engine (310 hp). All race cars are matched with professional-grade transmission systems; GT2 race car uses an XTrac LMP sequential gearbox.

Suspension and Aerodynamics: Flagship models use a pushrod double-wishbone suspension system derived from LMP1 race cars; GT2 race car is equipped with Ohlins TTX40 double-wishbone suspension and Alcon GT endurance braking system. Akula can generate 376 kg of downforce at 100mph speed, only 5% lower than Ginetta LMP3 race car. GT2 race car is equipped with a full carbon fiber aerodynamic kit, including front splitter, louvered body panels, and large rear wing.

Global Presence

Ginetta's overseas strategy takes the North American market as the core fulcrum. In March 2021, the brand officially announced the establishment of Ginetta North America. By acquiring US leading low-volume sports car manufacturer TMI AutoTech (located in South Boston, Virginia), it set up a sales, distribution, manufacturing, and engineering center of approximately 60,000 square feet locally. Brand products have been exported to many countries and regions including the USA.

In October 2025, Ginetta announced it will participate in the SRO GT America Series for the first time in the 2026 season, and run a single-brand series centered on the V8-powered G56 GTP8 race car. Ginetta GT2 race car will enter the GT America Series after completing certification. The brand has test drive activity points at famous European tracks such as Maniures in Spain, and actively participates in world-class events such as Le Mans and Silverstone. In the Asia-Pacific region, the Ginetta G55 GT4 model participated in the 2025 Macau Grand Prix GT4 Asian category racing.

Future Strategy

Ginetta is currently in a critical phase of product iteration and global market expansion. In the racing sector, the Ginetta GT2 will officially compete in the GT2 European Series during the 2026 season, potentially expanding to North America and other international GT events, thereby becoming the seventh manufacturer to participate in this series. Additionally, the Ginetta GTP8 will begin competing in the SRO GT America Series as a single-make category starting in the 2026 season. The brand continues to cultivate young driver talent through its Junior events.

Regarding road cars, the Akula supercar is expected to enter the customer delivery phase in 2026. In terms of electrification, while the brand previously announced R&D plans for high-performance electric sports cars, further progress remains to be clarified. Given that global motorsport is gradually adopting hybrid and sustainable fuel technologies, Ginetta may introduce hybrid race cars or electric racing solutions compliant with new regulations in the future. The brand's overall strategy will continue to follow a dual-wheel drive model of "race-driven development and limited-edition road cars establishing brand prestige," while consolidating its overseas growth hub centered on North America.
