The Trumpchi GS4 is a C-segment compact SUV launched by GAC Trumpchi, with the first-generation model making its market debut on 18 April 2015 positioned as an "international new-style SUV". Serving as the core pillar of GAC Trumpchi's SUV stable, the GS4 enjoyed a stellar run between 2016 and 2017, consistently recording monthly sales exceeding 30,000 units to rank among the top-selling Chinese domestic compact SUVs. In 2019, the second-generation GS4 was introduced on GAC's Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA), spawning petrol, PHEV, and Coupe variants, with official price tags ranging from RM89,800 to RM151,800. The 2022 update brought Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities and a super-sensing interactive smart cockpit, offering a choice of a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. By 2026, cumulative sales of the GS4 family had approached 1.8 million units; however, amid the surge of new energy vehicles, monthly deliveries plummeted to 174 units in April 2026. The current lineup includes the 2024 GS4 MAX, with the Pilot Edition priced officially at RM115,800 and the Flagship Edition at RM125,800, while promotional showroom prices hover around RM92,800 and RM102,800, respectively.
The exterior styling of the Trumpchi GS4 has evolved across three generations. The original 2015 model debuted GAC Trumpchi's first-generation "Flying Dynamics" family design language, characterised by a triple-slat chrome grille flanked by eagle-eye headlamps—a look that offered strong road presence among domestic SUVs at the time. The second generation (2019) upgraded to the "Flying Dynamics 3.0" styling, featuring dual-module LED headlamps, diamond-matrix indicators, and an enlarged front grille. For 2022, a new "Photon Wing" grille was introduced to mimic the diffusion of light in a digital explosion for added tech appeal, joining the Sky-shaking Wing and Flying Dynamics grille options. Round the back, a full-width taillight cluster replaced the previous chrome strip, adding greater visual depth.
Inside, the second-generation GS4 features an X-themed dashboard layout, with range-topping variants equipped with dual 12.3-inch continuous displays running the ADiGO intelligent connected ecosystem. The 2022 model offers three interior colourways—Black-Red, Black-Brown, and All-Black—along with a sportier steering wheel featuring a red 12 o'clock marker tailored for younger buyers. Seats are trimmed in leatherette, while rear passengers benefit from a centre armrest, dedicated headrests, and rear air-con vents; a 2,680mm wheelbase and a fully flat rear floor ensure generous rear legroom.
In terms of dimensions, the first-generation GS4 measures 4,510mm long, 1,852mm wide, and 1,708mm tall, with a 2,650mm wheelbase; the second-generation grows to 4,545mm in length, 1,856mm in width, and 1,700mm in height, riding on a 2,680mm wheelbase; the 2024 GS4 MAX measures 4,685mm long, 1,901mm wide, and 1,690mm tall, with an extended wheelbase of 2,750mm.
The Trumpchi GS4's powertrain options have evolved across iterations. The first generation was powered by two four-cylinder turbocharged engines: a 1.3T (200T) and a 1.5T (235T). The 1.5T unit produced 112kW (152PS) and 235N·m of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual, a 7-speed dry dual-clutch, or an Aisin 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, with an all-wheel-drive option also offered.
The second-generation GS4 standardises the third-generation 270T 1.5T high-output turbo engine across the range. Incorporating GCCS combustion control, a low-inertia E-Turbo, and DCVVT dual variable valve timing, it churns out 124kW (169PS) and 265N·m of torque from 1,700 to 4,000rpm, delivering a thermal efficiency of 36%. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed wet dual-clutch, and an Aisin third-generation 6-speed automatic. Power is sent to the front wheels (earlier first-gen models offered an on-demand AWD system). Combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.8L/100km (NEDC), with the powertrain tuned for smooth power delivery and punchy low-end torque, propelling the SUV from 0 to 100km/h in around 9 to 10 seconds.
The 2024 GS4 MAX carries on with the 1.5T engine paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, returning a fuel economy figure as low as 6.8L/100km.
Underneath, the second-generation GS4 rides on MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link independent rear setup, marking a notable upgrade from the first-gen's rear torsion beam configuration. Chassis development and tuning were led by GAC R&D Center's Chief Technical Officer Marco (formerly of Fiat and Alfa Romeo) on GAC's modular GPMA platform. On the move, the chassis delivers a solid, planted feel, soaking up minor road imperfections effectively for a refined ride; the suspension is set up on the softer, comfort-oriented side, though body roll is noticeable when pushed through consecutive corners. The steering offers Comfort, Standard, and Sport modes, calibrated with a light, easy-going feel and a modest dead zone suited for everyday family motoring.
Braking duties are backed by a Bosch ESP 9.3 electronic stability programme, achieving a 100–0km/h emergency stopping distance of 36.5 metres. The earlier first-generation 2017 1.5T model offered an on-demand 4WD variant featuring 2WD, i-4WD, and LOCK modes, with LOCK mode fixing front-to-rear torque split at 50:50.
Up front, upper variants of the second-generation GS4 feature dual 12.3-inch HD screens (digital instrument cluster + infotainment touchscreen) powered by the ADiGO smart driving ecosystem, set within a layered X-theme dashboard. The 2022 model gained the Super-Sensing Interactive Smart Cockpit, developed alongside tech heavyweights like Huawei, iFlytek, and Volcano Engine. It packs features such as fatigue and distraction alerts, a car finder, rain-sensing auto window closure, auto window closure upon locking, a rainstorm mode, remote pre-cooling, smoke-sensing ventilation, gesture-based music track skipping, and gaze-activated screen wake-up, with support for OTA updates. Connectivity includes Huawei HiCar, Baidu CarLife, and Apple CarPlay, while the 2022 model debuted as the world's first mass-produced car with in-car WeChat, allowing voice-controlled messaging.
In terms of convenience and comfort, the 2022 GS4 added a hands-free powered tailgate, a 7-inch instrument display, and a 10.25-inch central screen to the Zhixing Pilot Edition and above. Baseline standard kit across the range includes a multifunction steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, rear AC vents, and USB charging ports. Higher-spec trims add a heated driver's seat, automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof, and wireless phone charging. Boot space stands at 470L in standard configuration and expands to 1,560L with the rear backrests folded flat, outperforming most segment rivals.
On the safety front, the Trumpchi GS4 employs GAC's cage-type crash energy absorption body structure, reinforced by a 5-longitudinal and 5-transverse high-strength steel skeleton alongside double inverted-V door crash beams. Key structural components such as door sills and lower longitudinal rails utilise 1,500MPa hot-formed steel, over five times stronger than standard automotive steel. High-strength steel makes up 62% of the body structure, meeting 2018 C-NCAP 5-star crash safety standards. In 2021 C-NCAP testing, the GS4 scored a 5-star rating with an impressive 91.0% overall score, topping safety rankings for vehicles in the RM100,000 bracket in its test batch. CATARC also broadcast the vehicle's public post-crash teardown live online, highlighting the crumple zone's energy dissipation with the A-pillars and roof cant rails intact, and all four doors opening normally.
For driver assistance, the 2022 GS4 equips mid-to-high variants with a Level 2 ADAS suite comprising Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC, 0–150km/h), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA). Bosch ESP 9.3, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and dual front airbags are standard across the board, with higher trims adding front side airbags and full-length curtain airbags for a 6-airbag setup.
The Trumpchi GS4 stands as GAC Trumpchi's single largest volume contributor, previously accounting for over 90% of the brand's total sales volume. The model enjoyed its heyday from 2016 to 2017, frequently breaching 30,000 units monthly and consistently finishing near the top of the domestic compact SUV charts. When the second-generation model arrived in 2019, it racked up over 11,000 orders within its first fortnight, with cumulative ownership surpassing 1.3 million by 2021. However, stiffening market competition and the aggressive rise of new energy vehicles led to steady sales erosion, with monthly deliveries slipping to just 174 units in April 2026. Notably, the model topped the compact SUV segment in the 2017 J.D. Power China Initial Quality Study (IQS), while GAC Trumpchi retained the top spot among Chinese mainstream domestic brands in the study for eight consecutive years.
Owner reviews highlight the GS4's roominess, fuel economy (approx. 6.8L/100km), well-sorted chassis, and generous equipment list as standout qualities. The flat rear floor significantly enhances middle-passenger comfort, and the 1,500+ litre expanded boot easily tackles family road trips. Its verified C-NCAP 5-star safety rating and live teardown demonstration have also bolstered buyer confidence. On the downside, owners report noticeable wind and tyre roar at highway cruising speeds, prominent hard interior plastics, sparse safety equipment on entry-level models, and low-speed hesitation in earlier DCT iterations. Overall, while the GS4 has been an exceptionally well-rounded workhorse for GAC Trumpchi, it faces steep headwinds amid the industry's electrification push. An all-new generation GS4 featuring an extended 2,770mm wheelbase and EV-inspired styling was submitted to MIIT in May 2026, aiming to breathe new life into the nameplate's decade-long legacy.
