Model Overview

The AION ES is an entry-level, all-electric four-door sedan from GAC AION, serving as a key strategic model in GAC Group’s global roadmap. Built primarily for international markets, the EV has already been introduced in regions including Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Positioned as a C+-segment sedan with dimensions approaching the D-segment, the AION ES focuses on practicality, efficiency, and high value for money. Body dimensions measure 4,810 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,545 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. In Hong Kong, under the "One-for-One Replacement" Scheme, pricing initially started from HKD 179,000 before being revised downward to HKD 131,300 (without requiring the scheme); in Malaysia, it retails at RM 106,800 (approx. RMB 163,000). In mainland China, the AION ES is currently produced primarily for export and is not widely marketed domestically.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the AION ES embraces a sleek and minimalist design language, delivering a clean, contemporary road presence. Up front, it features an integrated bumper paired with angular multi-faceted LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The rear is defined by a trendy full-width LED taillight bar with sequential turn signals and integrated rear fog lamps. Standard exterior equipment includes automatic LED headlamps, an LED rear fog lamp, a high-mounted third brake light, and 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 215/55 R17 tyres. Exterior colour choices comprise Holographic Silver, Speed Silver, Arctic White, and Night Shadow Black.

Inside, the cabin features a practical grey-and-black dual-tone theme, with front seats upholstered in PVC synthetic leather accented by piano black trim on the centre console. The dashboard houses an 8-inch central touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay connectivity. The instrument binnacle adopts a classic twin-dial analogue gauge layout flanked by a central 3.5-inch colour TFT multi-info display (MID). Cabin climate is regulated by a dual-zone automatic climate control system equipped with PM2.5 air purification and dedicated rear air vents. The front seats are manually adjustable (6-way for the driver and 4-way for the front passenger), while the rear bench features a 60:40 split-folding function.

Powertrain and Performance

The AION ES is driven by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor in a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration. The motor outputs a maximum power of 100 kW (approx. 136 PS) and a peak torque of 225 Nm. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 12.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 150 km/h.

Energy storage comes courtesy of a 55.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) "Magazine Battery". It delivers a cruising range of 442 km under the NEDC cycle (or approx. 314 km on the WLTP cycle). For charging, it supports 6.6 kW AC charging (fully charged in approx. 11 hours) and 60 kW DC fast charging (30% to 80% state of charge in around 30 minutes; full charge in 1.5 hours). The vehicle also comes standard with a 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply feature to run external electrical appliances. Drivers can select from 3 drive modes and 3 levels of regenerative braking intensity.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the chassis employs front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension setup. Braking is handled by ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear. The steering is an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. It offers a laden ground clearance of 120 mm and a kerb weight of 1,665 kg (including spare tyre). Cruise control and an electronic parking brake (EPB) with Auto Hold come standard. Benefiting from the instant torque delivery of an electric powertrain, the AION ES provides noticeably sharper throttle response than conventional 1.5L or 2.0L naturally aspirated petrol models in its segment.

Cabin and Features

Prioritising functional everyday utility, the cabin comes equipped with an 8-inch central touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay), a 3.5-inch TFT colour multi-info display, and a multifunction steering wheel (with audio, telephony, cruise control, and trip computer toggles). For convenience, standard amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control (with PM2.5 filtration and rear AC vents), keyless entry with push-button start, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror (with an integrated USB power port), a front 12V power socket, and four USB ports across the cabin. Boot capacity stands at 450 to 453 litres, expanding significantly with the rear backrests folded flat. A front centre armrest with integrated storage and standard front cupholders round out the cabin's practicality.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety equipment, the AION ES is fitted with dual front airbags (driver and front passenger). Active safety systems include Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Parking aids consist of a reverse camera and rear parking sensors. Additional safety functions include a collision mitigation system, Traction Control System (TCS), and automatic high beam (AHB). Passive protection is reinforced by an impact-absorbing body structure. It should be noted that safety kit on the AION ES remains basic, omitting advanced driving aids such as a 360-degree surround-view monitor.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its Hong Kong launch in early 2024, the AION ES has met with enthusiastic demand, with initial allocations selling out ahead of first deliveries. By the end of February 2026, cumulative orders in Hong Kong surpassed 1,000 units, ranking it among the best-selling electric private cars in the region. In February 2026, GAC AION rose to third place in Hong Kong's overall EV brand sales and second among Chinese carmakers. In Malaysia, priced at RM 106,800, the AION ES stands as one of the most competitively priced electric sedans available.

Motoring media reviews highlight the AION ES's chief strengths as its near-D-segment footprint with a generous cabin, practical 442 km range, V2L capability, and aggressive price point. Noted shortcomings include its basic safety specifications (dual airbags only), a predominantly hard-plastic interior, and modest 0-100 km/h acceleration. The AION ES comes backed by an 8-year/160,000 km whole-vehicle warranty along with an 8-year/200,000 km battery warranty. As an essential pillar in GAC AION's global strategy, the AION ES leverages its compelling mix of interior room, usable range, and value for money to carve out a distinct presence in the international entry-level EV saloon market.
