Formula E (FE)
Definition and Historic Significance
Formula E, officially known as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, is the pinnacle of all-electric single-seater racing worldwide, sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The series made its debut in September 2014 on the Beijing Olympic Park Street Circuit, where Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi claimed victory behind the wheel of an Audi race car. The inception of FE ushered motorsport into the electrified era, serving not just as a competitive arena, but as a proving ground and promotional platform for electric mobility tech. In the 2020/2021 season, FE achieved FIA World Championship status, cementing its place among elite global motorsport series alongside F1, WEC, and WRC.
Technical Specifications of the GEN3 Evo Era
The 2025/2026 season marks the swan song for the GEN3 Evo machine and stands as one of the most hotly contested seasons in FE history. The GEN3 Evo puts out a maximum power of 350 kW (around 470 hp), hitting a top speed of up to 322 km/h and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 2.0 seconds. The signature Attack Mode allows drivers to unlock extra power output within designated activation zones, while the pit-stop fast-charging system can top up roughly 4 kWh of energy in just 30 seconds in the pit lane. Jaguar TCS Racing clinched the Teams' World Championship powered by the I-Type 7 powertrain, while Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein sealed the Drivers' World Championship, becoming only the second driver in FE history to be crowned a two-time champion. Mahindra Racing secured third place in the Teams' standings with 252 points for their best-ever season finish, as Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara locked out second and third at the London finale, ending the team's ten-year podium drought.
The Quantum Leap of the GEN4 Era
FE officially enters the GEN4 era for the 2026/2027 season, marking the most radical technical overhaul in the championship's history. The GEN4 car sees its maximum output boosted to 450 kW, topping out at 600 kW in Attack Mode—a 71% jump over the GEN3 Evo. Top speed breaches the 335 km/h mark, with 0–100 km/h taking just 1.8 seconds and 0–200 km/h dispatched in 4.4 seconds, shaving 1.5 seconds off the previous generation. GEN4 is FE's first-ever all-wheel-drive single-seater, and remains the only single-seater race car equipped with such a drivetrain. The battery pack adopts a rare-earth-free design, key components feature 20% recycled materials, tyres incorporate 65% natural and recycled materials, and the entire car is built from 100% recyclable or reusable materials. Works outfits including Jaguar, Porsche, and Nissan continue in-house powertrain development, while Opel GSE and Citroën join the manufacturer roster flying the flag for Stellantis Group.
Sporting Format Shake-Up for the 2026/2027 Season
The inaugural GEN4 season brings a major revamp to race weekend formats. Double-header weekends will ditch the traditional mirror-image race setup in favour of two distinct formats: E-Prix Unleashed will be a 30-minute flat-out sprint race featuring a high-downforce aero setup, Attack Mode trimmed to 6 minutes, and no compulsory pit stops; the traditional E-Prix will be a 45-minute tactical endurance run using a low-downforce setup to optimise energy management, with Attack Mode extended to 8 minutes and mandatory fast-charging pit stops retained. Qualifying will award championship points for the first time, rewarding all drivers who advance to the Duels knockout phase, with an extra point for the pole-sitter. This setup gives Saturday and Sunday completely different racing dynamics, demanding teams adapt quickly between contrasting aero setups and energy strategies.
2026/2027 Season Calendar
Season 13 kicks off on its grandest scale yet, spanning 21 races across 13 cities. The campaign gets underway on 18–19 December 2026 with a double-header night race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, before heading to Mexico City, Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Miami, and São Paulo. The Asian leg opens on 17 April 2027 at the Sanya Haitang Bay Circuit, marking the GEN4 racer's maiden track outing in China. The European stretch takes in Berlin, Monaco, London's Brands Hatch, Zandvoort, and Madrid-Jarama, before wrapping up with double-headers at the Shanghai International Circuit on 10–11 July 2027 and the Tokyo Street Circuit on 24–25 July 2027. The calendar is grouped regionally across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific to trim logistics mileage and cut carbon emissions.
Chinese Teams and Grid Footprint
Envision Racing stands as the sole Chinese-backed outfit on the FE grid, based in the UK and having shared powertrains with Jaguar throughout the GEN3 era. For the 2026/2027 season, Envision Racing has snapped up former DS Penske driver Maximilian Günther to lead the charge into the GEN4 era. Günther noted that the deciding factor in joining Envision was "the outstanding technology and powertrain stemming from the partnership with Jaguar," alongside the team's "immense ambition and hard-charging mentality". With double fixtures in Sanya and Shanghai, FE's presence in China continues to flourish, with Sanya's role as the Asian curtain-raiser making it a vital strategic springboard in the Asia-Pacific region for the GEN4 era.
