Denza Z9 is a flagship D-segment tech-luxury saloon launched by BYD's premium sub-brand, Denza, having officially debuted at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2024. Offered in both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and all-electric (EV) powertrains, the entire line-up comes standard with the proprietary e3 technology platform and the DiSus-A intelligent air body control system. Featuring independent tri-motor drive and rear-wheel steering as its standout technical highlights, the Z9 serves as Denza's strategic contender in the high-end executive saloon segment.

Positioned as a D-segment luxury flagship saloon under BYD's Denza marque, its key selling points include standard equipment such as the e3 technology platform, independent tri-motor all-wheel drive, dual-motor independent rear-wheel steering, DiSus-A intelligent air suspension, and a brisk 0-100 km/h century sprint in just 3.6 seconds. The 2024 line-up comprises 5 variants, with the PHEV version priced between RM334,800 and RM414,800, and the pure electric version tagged from RM354,800 to RM384,800. Regulatory filings for the updated 2026 model were completed in January 2026, adding an entry-level single-motor RWD variant to lower the barrier to entry, slated for launch in the first half of 2026.
The Denza Z9 adopts the brand's "Solar Corona" design language, harmonising sleek elegance with athletic flair. Up front, it features dual-corona LED headlight clusters with a distinctive "double-eyelid" inner lens layout for instant recognisability, complemented by a gloss-black mesh lower air intake that aids cooling and enhances its sporty stance. Along the flanks, the saloon displays flowing, elongated proportions with frameless doors, flush pop-out door handles, and tasteful chrome window surrounds, giving it a low-slung, planted profile. The rear sports an hourglass-styled full-width taillight bar housing eight groups of dot-matrix lighting elements, paired with an illuminated emblem and an active deployable rear spoiler for an unmistakable night-time light signature.
In terms of dimensions, the EV variant measures 5,220 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, and 1,500 mm tall, whereas the PHEV version measures 5,235 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,518 mm in height, with both riding on an expansive 3,125 mm wheelbase. Regulatory figures for the 2026 model stand at 5,195 mm / 1,990 mm / 1,490 mm while retaining the same wheelbase. For context, its overall exterior dimensions comfortably surpass the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz E-Class (5,092 mm).
Inside, the cabin features a classic symmetrical T-layout dominated by a triple-screen digital dashboard: a 13.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and a 13.2-inch front passenger entertainment screen, with high-spec variants adding a 50-inch AR-HUD and a digital streaming rear-view mirror as standard. Running on the DiLink intelligent OS powered by a 4nm BYD 9000 chipset, it supports four-zone voice activation, facial recognition, and voiceprint authentication. Factory appointments also include premium leather upholstery, a 20-speaker Devialet sound system, four-zone automatic climate control, an on-board fragrance system, and a smart in-car refrigerator.
The Denza Z9 is available in both plug-in hybrid and pure electric configurations, with all variants featuring a tri-motor setup:
Plug-in Hybrid (DM): Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (152 kW/207 PS) paired with a tri-motor system (one front, two rear) delivering a combined output of 640 kW (870 PS) and 1,035 N·m of torque. Paired with a 38.5 kWh Blade battery, it offers an electric-only range of 161 km (WLTC) and a total combined cruising range of 1,101 km (CLTC). It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds, with a low-battery fuel consumption of 5.6 L/100 km.
Pure Electric (EV): The tri-motor system generates a total output of 710 kW (966 PS) and 1,150 N·m of torque, delivering a CLTC range of 630 km with an energy consumption figure of 15.8 kWh per 100 km.
2026 Model Updates: A new single-motor RWD variant with a maximum power of 370 kW and a top speed of 240 km/h will join the range. The PHEV version's battery pack is upgraded to 63.82 kWh, extending its CLTC pure electric range beyond 400 km and pushing the combined driving range past 1,000 km.
The entire model range comes standard with the e3 platform, representing the world's first vehicle architecture capable of delivering independent tri-motor drive along with rear-wheel steering simultaneously. With dual-motor independent rear steering enabling up to ±20° of turning angle, the minimum turning radius is reduced to just 4.62 metres—tighter than most A0-segment compact city cars. Built on this architecture, the Denza Z9 offers several innovative chassis functions:
Intelligent Crab Walk: Moves the car diagonally and parallel with the wheels angled at 15°
Compass Turn: Performs in-place tank-like turns in tight spaces without excessive tyre scrub
e3 Parking: Once the front of the vehicle enters a bay, the rear wheels pivot automatically to complete parallel parking effortlessly
Blowout Stability Control: Modulates torque vectoring and steering input during a tyre blowout at speeds up to 140 km/h to keep the vehicle stable and prevent fishtailing
Underneath, the chassis employs a front double-wishbone and rear five-link independent suspension setup, utilising extensive aluminium components to reduce unsprung weight. Lower-spec variants feature DiSus-C (electronic adaptive dampers), while mid-to-high trims come with DiSus-A (dual-chamber air springs with electromagnetic damping), allowing dynamic real-time adjustment of ride height, stiffness, and damping to eliminate body pitch and roll.
Rear-seat executive luxury is a central highlight of the Z9. It boasts 10-way electrically adjustable rear seats with massage, heating, and extendable ottoman functions. The rear centre armrest incorporates a 7-inch control screen alongside pop-out dual cup holders. Dual 12.8-inch rear entertainment displays are mounted behind the front seats, while selected variants also feature a 7-inch auxiliary touchscreen on the B-pillar. Other notable luxuries include dual front and rear heating/cooling fridges, fold-out rear tray tables, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, and power sunshades for both rear side windows.
For advanced driver assistance, the car is equipped with the DiPilot 300 ADAS suite. The sensor array features 26 perception sensors, including a trifocal front-facing camera and dual LiDAR units (moved to the roof on the 2026 model), enabling Highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), Urban NOA, and automated valet parking.
Following its market launch, the Denza Z9's sales figures fell short of initial expectations. In January 2025, total series sales recorded 1,585 units—comprising 1,039 units of the Z9 GT PHEV, 466 units of the Z9 PHEV saloon, and only 80 units of the EV variant. In February 2025, monthly sales dipped further to just over 600 units. Automotive analysts attribute this muted reception to several factors:
Premium Pricing: A starting price of RM334,800 places it directly against established German luxury marques (BBA), where consumer brand recognition for Denza is still in its infancy.
Brand Positioning Challenges: Denza has heavily depended on the D9 MPV for volume, which mainly targets corporate and fleet buyers, leaving its brand appeal among private executive car buyers yet to be fully cemented.
Over-Specified Amenities: Novelties such as dual in-car refrigerators raise bill-of-materials costs without being primary purchase criteria, pushing base retail prices upwards.
Intense Market Competition: The Huawei-backed Stelato S9 has exerted strong competitive pressure, drawing away potential customers in the RM300,000+ premium new energy saloon category.
To address these sales challenges, Denza has rolled out targeted countermeasures: offering existing owners a complimentary upgrade to a three-spoke sports steering wheel (worth RM5,780) starting in June 2025, introducing an entry-level single-motor RWD variant for 2026, and expanding battery capacity to bolster range competitiveness.
On the whole, the Denza Z9 exhibits benchmark standards for domestic luxury saloons across chassis refinement, technical innovation, and equipment levels. Proprietary features unlocked by the e3 platform—such as Crab Walk and Compass Turn—provide genuine market differentiation. Nevertheless, closing the gap between its brand prestige and retail pricing will require time, making the market reception of the updated and repositioned 2026 model one to watch closely. Prospective buyers are advised to consider the 2026 PHEV variant (with pure EV range upgraded to 400+ km) or the newly introduced, high-value single-motor pure electric RWD variant.
