2026-10-02 20:30:00

Model Overview

The Denza N8 is a plug-in hybrid D-segment SUV launched by BYD's premium marque, Denza. As the second offering in the brand’s revamped N-series, the N8 serves as the direct successor to the previous Denza X. The model officially went on sale on 5 August 2023, offering two variants: the 4WD Super Hybrid Flagship 6-Seater (RM326,800) and the 4WD Super Hybrid Flagship 7-Seater (RM319,800). Marketed as an "Intelligent Luxury All-Scenario SUV", it is engineered for both urban family commutes and light off-roading, with key rivals including segment contenders like the Li Auto L8, NIO ES6, and Wey Lanshan.

Design Language

The Denza N8 incorporates the brand's latest design philosophy—the π-MOTION aesthetic. Up front, it features a sleek, low-profile fascia with striking fang-styled headlamps; the clean LED daytime running lights are complemented by an all-LED headlight setup, linked by a black gloss trim strip across the nose. The split grille design sweeps outward from the centre to integrate seamlessly with the side air intakes, delivering a distinctly sporty stance. Along the sides, the SUV sports smooth, curvaceous body lines with muscular wheel arches that lend it a bold, athletic presence. The D-pillar integrates expansive glass framed by boomerang-styled chrome garnishes. At the rear, a full-width twin-wing LED taillight bar echoes the front-end styling. Dimensions-wise, the vehicle measures 4,949 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,725 mm in height, with a 2,830 mm wheelbase. Five exterior colour options are offered: Midnight Green, Dawn Grey, Elegance Blue, Nightfall Black, and Bright Sun White. Inside, the dashboard layout features a horizontal design inspired by the mathematical symbol π. The cabin boasts a 12.3-inch floating 3D digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch W-HUD head-up display, and a 15.6-inch 2.5K ultra-clear floating touchscreen infotainment head unit. Premium touches include extensive soft-touch upholstery, a suede headliner, and Nappa leather upholstery, elevated by crystal interior accents for a truly luxurious ambiance.

Powertrain & Performance

The Denza N8 is powered by the DM-p super hybrid powertrain, pairing an EHS hybrid drive system with a 1.5T Xiaoyun turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.5T mill generates 102 kW (around 139 PS) and 231 Nm of torque, boasting a thermal efficiency of 40.12%; the dual front and rear electric motors produce a combined output of 360 kW (around 490 PS). This delivers a total system output of 360 kW, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds. Power is channelled through an electronic continuously variable transmission (E-CVT).

In terms of electric range, the N8 packs a 45.8 kWh hybrid-dedicated Blade Battery. It achieves an NEDC-rated pure electric range of 216 km and an impressive total cruising range of 1,030 km. Fuel consumption in charge-depleting mode is rated at just 6.45 L/100 km. For rapid charging, it supports 90 kW DC fast charging, replenishing the battery up to 80% in 20 minutes. Kerb weight stands at 2,450 kg.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the Denza N8's chassis builds upon the Mercedes-Benz-derived tuning of the Denza X with further refinements. It features MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link independent setup at the rear. DiSus-C intelligent damping body control comes standard across the entire range. The system alters the damping force by regulating the internal hydraulic fluid volume via electronic solenoid valves, automatically adapting to road conditions to strike an ideal balance between ride comfort and dynamic handling. Real-world testing reveals that with DiSus-C, maximum pitch angle under 0.3g braking is reduced by 34%, high-speed emergency braking pitch at 100 km/h is curbed by 28.3%, and squat under full-throttle acceleration is mitigated by 39.4%. It also comes equipped with Comfort Control Technology (CCT), ensuring composed vehicle posture during take-off, acceleration, and braking. Power is distributed via an electronic all-wheel-drive system, complemented by a standard rear-axle differential lock. Stopping power is handled by front 6-piston Brembo callipers. Three selectable drive modes are available: Sport, Normal, and Eco.

Cabin & Equipment

The smart cockpit is driven by the Denza Link 5G connected ecosystem. The setup supports three-screen synergy between the digital meter panel, W-HUD, and the central display. The 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen delivers pin-sharp visual clarity. Its intelligent voice assistant supports four-zone independent recognition, controlling over 1,000 onboard functions with a lightning-fast wake-up response time of just 0.4 seconds.

For seating comfort, the N8 is offered in 6-seater (2+2+2) and 7-seater (2+3+2) configurations. The 6-seater variant features individual second-row captain chairs with electric adjustments, seat ventilation, heating, and 10-point massage functions. It is also the first SUV in its class to feature dual fold-down tray tables in the middle row, accommodating both family trips and mobile office needs. Premium audio is delivered by a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system. Other creature comforts include a panoramic glass sunroof with an electric blind, dual 50W Qi wireless smartphone chargers, and NFC digital smart key access. Cabin refinement is equally impressive, with NVH levels suppressed to 62 dB at 100 km/h. Boot capacity ranges from 235 to 1,655 litres.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the Denza N8 is equipped with the Denza Pilot Level 2+ advanced driver assistance suite. The vehicle is fitted with 24 sensing hardwares, comprising 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 high-precision millimetre-wave radars, 4 surround-view ADAS cameras, and 1 high-perception ADAS camera. Key active safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Speed Limit Information (ISLI), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Rear Collision Warning (RCW). Highway Assist (HWA) provides continuous lateral and longitudinal guidance between 60 and 130 km/h, complete with turn-signal-activated auto lane changing. The automated park assist system supports perpendicular, parallel, and angled parking manoeuvres. In January 2024, the Denza N8 received an over-the-air (OTA) update that refined the user interface logic for the ILCA and ICC switches while sharpening AEB emergency braking performance. Passive safety is bolstered by front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.

Market Performance & Verdict

Following its debut, the Denza N8 struggled to gain market traction, falling well short of sales targets. In 2024, full-year deliveries stood at just 469 units, with monthly sales between March and May scraping only 70, 33, and 34 units respectively. Industry observers noted that the N8 had effectively fallen off the sales radar by 2024. Factors behind the lacklustre reception include an awkward market positioning as it was widely perceived as a "rebadged" BYD Tang DM-p; mixed reactions to its exterior styling alongside in-car tech that lagged behind key competitors; and internal cannibalisation from sister models like the D9 and N7. In October 2025, Denza unveiled the N8L Flash Charging Edition (RM350,000-RM400,000) as the updated spiritual successor to the N8. On the ownership front, buyers praise its generous cabin space, well-sorted chassis, and potent hybrid performance; however, criticisms arose over early discontinuation just six months after purchase and delayed OTA software rollouts. In summary, while the Denza N8 presented solid engineering merits—headlined by its rapid 4.3-second DM-p hybrid powertrain, DiSus-C active suspension, 45.8 kWh Blade Battery (216 km EV range), and Level 2+ ADAS—it was ultimately held back by brand strategy, overlapping product positioning, and fierce market competition, leaving its commercial run well below initial expectations.
