The Fengon 500 is a compact SUV under DFSK that was officially launched on 29 October 2020. Built around a "user-defined" vehicle development philosophy, it brought the price threshold for compact SUVs down to the RM50,000 mark for the first time. The model precisely catered to young first-time car buyers looking for a value-for-money family vehicle, quickly becoming the brand’s dark horse in the budget SUV segment. In August 2021, the 2022 Fengon 500 was introduced with a higher-output 1.5T variant, bringing the line-up to offer both 1.5L and 1.5T powertrains with prices ranging from RM61,800 to RM85,800.

Design Language

The exterior of the 2022 Fengon 500 moves away from the conservative look of the original model, adopting a bolder black matrix front grille paired with smoked split tail lights for a sportier, more distinctive appearance that appeals to younger buyers. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,385 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,645 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,655 mm. Inside, the cabin showcases a stylish dual-tone sporty theme complemented by four round turbine-style air-con vents, creating a strong athletic vibe. The 1.5T Smart Enjoyment variant upgrades the floating infotainment touchscreen from 7 inches to 8.8 inches, an option that is also made available on selected variants.

Powertrain & Performance

The Fengon 500 is offered with two powertrain choices: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit. The 1.5L variant pushes out 116 PS and 147.5 Nm of torque, mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT gearbox, focusing on fuel economy with a combined fuel consumption rated as low as 6.4 L/100 km. Meanwhile, the 1.5T variant produces a healthier 150 PS and 220 Nm of torque paired with a CVT gearbox, offering punchier performance and previously bagging the "China Heart" Top Ten Engines award in 2022.

Built on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform, the Fengon 500 utilises MacPherson strut independent suspension up front and a torsion beam non-independent setup at the rear, along with electric power steering (EPS). The suspension setup is tuned with a sportier bias, striking a balance between daily ride comfort and responsive handling.

Cabin & Equipment

Higher-spec variants of the Fengon 500 are fitted with an 8.8-inch HD touchscreen head unit that supports 4G connected services, online voice command, and over-the-air (OTA) updates to ensure the in-car system remains up to date. Additionally, the 2022 model is equipped with a large panoramic sunroof, allowing ample natural light into the cabin and creating an airy, spacious ambiance for occupants.

When it comes to safety kit, the Fengon 500 offers a solid list of equipment. It has helped DFSK build a solid reputation for delivering value-for-money, spacious five-seater SUVs, while offering budget-conscious young families a dependable and practical daily runabout.
