BYD Yuan Pro

2026-09-21 00:20:00

Vehicle Overview

The BYD Yuan Pro is a B-segment all-electric SUV under BYD's Dynasty series "Yuan" family, officially introduced in 2021 as the successor to the Yuan EV. On 31 May 2023, the facelifted Yuan Pro went on sale across three variants, priced from RM95,800 to RM113,800. The updated model saw its CLTC-rated electric range upgraded to two options of 320 km and 401 km, making it BYD's only all-electric SUV priced below RM100,000. Dimension-wise, the Yuan Pro measures 4,375 mm long, 1,785 mm wide, and 1,680 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,535 mm. In October 2025, the Yuan Pro Honour Edition debuted, driving the entry price down further to RM74,800. Notably, the Yuan Pro was officially superseded by the Yuan UP in March 2024, leading to the phase-out of Yuan Pro models. In export markets, however, BYD launched the Yuan Pro DM-i plug-in hybrid in Mexico in April 2026 with an NEDC combined range of 1,045 km, extending the nameplate's lifecycle with an all-new powertrain.

Design Language

The Yuan Pro adopts BYD's Dragon Face 3.0 design language. Up front, it features a closed-off grille flanked by a full-width chrome garnish and sharp star-diamond floating LED headlamps, lending it the visual aura of a "mini BYD Han". The side profile incorporates a dual-character waistline, complemented by 16-inch alloy wheels and two-tone wing mirrors. Around the back, it retains the family's iconic tailgate-mounted "backpack" spare tyre, paired with a chunky black lower bumper guard and split tail lamps for a rugged, sporty aesthetic. Exterior colour choices include Energetic Pink, Vitality White, and Energy Grey. Inside, the cabin sports a vibrant wraparound cockpit layout with a new "Fresh Blue" two-tone interior theme, delivering a youthful and lively ambiance.

Powertrain and Performance

Following the 2023 facelift, the Yuan Pro is powered across the range by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 70 kW (approx. 95 PS) and 180 Nm of peak torque. While detuned from the 2021 model's 100 kW output, the output adjustment has negligible effect on daily commuting given its urban-focused A0-segment brief. In terms of battery pack, the entire range utilises BYD's proprietary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, available in 38.9 kWh and 50.1 kWh capacities for CLTC electric ranges of 320 km and 401 km, respectively. The official rated energy consumption is as low as 12.4 kWh per 100 km. DC fast charging is standard across the board; the 401 km variant supports 60 kW DC charging, taking around 30 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80% state of charge. Furthermore, the Yuan Pro comes standard with Vehicle-to-Load (VTOL) capability, providing a 220V power supply for outdoor camping and external appliance use.

Chassis and Handling

The Yuan Pro employs a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout, riding on MacPherson struts at the front and a rear torsion beam setup—a standard suspension configuration for compact electric SUVs. With a minimum turning radius of 5.25 m, it offers agile manoeuvrability in tight city confines. Braking hardware comprises front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). Driver-selectable modes include Eco, Sport, and Snow. All variants come standard with BYD's third-generation intelligent battery thermal management system to guarantee operating stability across extreme ambient temperatures. Overall, the chassis is tuned for ride comfort, well-suited to daily urban commuting.

Cabin and Equipment

The Yuan Pro comes standard with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch rotatable floating central touchscreen that switches smoothly between landscape and portrait orientations. Infotainment is driven by the upgraded DiLink 4.0 intelligent connectivity system, featuring a refreshed HMI interface, an extensive third-party app ecosystem, and over-the-air (OTA) software update support. On the smart connectivity front, smartphone NFC digital key, Bluetooth key, and mobile app remote vehicle control are standard, alongside keyless entry and push-start ignition. Creature comforts include automatic climate control, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, a rear wiper, an in-car karaoke system, and roof rails. Higher variants gain synthetic leather upholstery alongside multi-way electric adjustment for the driver's seat. The audio setup supports comprehensive multimedia interaction and voice control.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the Yuan Pro uses a high-strength safety cage structure reinforced with high-tensile steel in crucial areas. The range-topping 401KM Premium variant is equipped with 6 airbags (dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags), with a driving video recorder fitted as standard. Active safety kit includes fundamental electronic aids such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Traction Control System (TCS). For driver assistance, the Yuan Pro provides a reverse camera (upgraded to a 360-degree surround-view monitor on high-spec trims), parking sensors, and cruise control. The flagship trim also benefits from an operable panoramic glass roof, enhancing cabin airiness and outward visibility. In addition, multi-circuit high-voltage power shut-off protection is fitted to enhance safety redundancy across the EV drive system.

Market Performance and Reception

The Yuan Pro's market presence witnessed an initial steady climb before tapering off into a gradual decline. Full-year sales in 2023 stood at 11,394 units, averaging under 1,000 units per month—a sharp contrast to the Yuan PLUS's annual tally of over 410,000 units. Deliveries dropped further to 4,235 units in 2024. Moving into 2025, monthly sales slipped to single digits, recording just 2 units for the entire year as the model effectively entered run-out clearance. This decline was largely driven by stiff segment rivalry and BYD's internal line-up reshuffle—most notably following the launch of the Yuan UP in March 2024, which swiftly replaced the Yuan Pro.

Nonetheless, the Yuan Pro has found renewed momentum abroad. In April 2026, BYD introduced the Yuan Pro DM-i plug-in hybrid in Mexico, combining the DM-i Super Hybrid system with an NEDC combined range of 1,045 km. By balancing smooth electric driving with long-haul endurance, this variant brings a compelling option to Latin America and highlights BYD's commitment to the global appeal of this compact SUV. From the Yuan EV to the Yuan Pro and onwards to the Yuan UP, the Yuan family has progressed across three iterations; though the Yuan Pro achieved modest domestic sales as a transitional offering, it remains an important historical milestone in BYD's push into the sub-RM100,000 EV segment.
