BYD Tang L

2026-10-03 18:00:02

Model Overview

The Tang L is an epoch-making flagship SUV officially launched under the BYD Dynasty line-up on 9 April 2025. Serving as the next-generation successor to the current Tang family, the Tang L represents far more than a routine update, delivering a comprehensive leap forward via its five-metre-class footprint and the cutting-edge Super e-Platform. The model is offered in two powertrain streams—the plug-in hybrid (Tang L DM) and the all-electric (Tang L EV)—spanning six variants with official retail prices ranging from RM229,800 to RM289,800. Factoring in subsidies, the Tang L DM is priced between RM214,800 and RM270,800, while the Tang L EV goes for RM224,800 to RM274,800. Positioned as an E-segment mid-to-large SUV, it centres around a seven-seater configuration, targeting family buyers seeking expansive cabin space, blistering performance, and advanced technology.

Design Language

The Tang L is BYD's first model to adopt split headlights, marking the next evolution of the brand's signature "Loong Face" design philosophy. The sealed front fascia features sharp daytime running lights tracing the bonnet's leading edge, joined by a full-width chrome trim with "Tang" badging to accentuate horizontal visual width. Along the flanks, stretched profile lines pair with a segmented waistline and flush pop-out door handles; at the rear sits a full-width light bar dubbed "Bamboo Rhythm", drawing design inspiration from traditional Chinese bamboo weaving. In terms of dimensions, it measures 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,760 mm tall, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. Approach and departure angles stand at 20° and 21° respectively, ensuring ample clearance for light off-roading.

The interior takes cues from traditional Chinese hipped roofs (Wu Dian Ding), integrating architectural palace contours into the dashboard layout. Embellishments such as 3D bamboo-and-wood trims alongside dual-layer interactive ambient lighting create a cabin ambience steeped in cultural heritage and luxury. The SUV features a steering column-mounted gear stalk, with a 15.6-inch adaptive rotating central touchscreen and an AR-HUD head-up display fitted as standard across the range.

Powertrain and Performance

The Tang L is available in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, boasting staggering performance figures.

The all-electric version (Tang L EV) comes standard with the Super e-Platform, built on the world's first production passenger-car full-domain 1,000V high-voltage architecture alongside flash-charge batteries and an ultra-high-revving 30,000-rpm electric motor. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version gets a single motor outputting 500 kW, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant features a dual-motor setup (230 kW front + 580 kW rear) delivering a combined system output of 810 kW (approx. 1,102 hp). It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in as quick as 3.6 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 287 km/h. All EV models pack a 100.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, offering a CLTC range of 670 km for the RWD variant and 600 km for the AWD variant. DC charging tops out at an immense 1,000 kW, capable of recuperating 370 km of range in just 5 minutes, delivering a true "megawatt flash charging" experience on par with conventional refuelling.

The plug-in hybrid version (Tang L DM) is equipped with BYD's 5th-generation DM technology (incorporating both DM-i Super Hybrid and DM-p King Hybrid setups). It pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (115 kW) with electric drive motors, with the performance-oriented DM-p version adopting twin 200 kW motors front and rear. The 0-100 km/h benchmark is dispatched in 4.3 seconds, while fuel consumption in hybrid/depleted-battery mode drops to a low 4.9 L/100 km. Pure electric range reaches up to 215 km, enabling a total cruising range of 1,430 km.

Chassis and Handling

The Tang L features an intelligent chassis as standard across the line-up, utilising a sophisticated aluminium-alloy suspension configuration with front double wishbones and rear five-link independent suspension. The entire range comes standard with the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System and the DiSus preview function, which scans road conditions via forward-facing cameras to adjust damper rates proactively in real time. This significantly elevates ride suppleness over undulations, delivering ride refinement matching established luxury marques. Drivetrain layouts include RWD and electric AWD for the EV, and front-wheel drive (FWD) and electric AWD for the DM hybrid.

Cabin and Equipment

All Tang L variants come equipped with the high-tier DiLink 150 intelligent cockpit system, powered by a 4nm automotive-grade chip with full native Android app compatibility and DeepSeek R1 large language model integration. The cabin supports full-vehicle voice control, 5G connectivity, and all-scenario digital key features. Comfort-wise, the standard seven-seat layout (2+3+2) features seat heating, ventilation, and massage functions across both front seats and second-row outer seats. Other premium amenities include on-board heating and cooling storage compartments (in both the front centre console and rear row), a 21-speaker bespoke audio system, an active fragrance diffuser, and wraparound ambient lighting. A six-seater configuration is also available as an option.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS)

Intelligent driving stands as a headline feature on the Tang L. All variants come equipped with the God's Eye B Advanced Intelligent Driving LiDAR Edition (DiPilot 300), powered by an NVIDIA Orin-X chip (254 TOPS computing power) and 29 high-precision sensors. Feature capabilities encompass Highway NOA and Urban NOA, alongside an OTA-upgradable "Parking Space to Parking Space" navigation assist function—allowing the car to autonomously exit a parking bay, navigate boom gates, and locate and park itself into an open bay upon reaching the destination. Additionally, buyers can option a roof-mounted LiDAR pod and an integrated drone bay. On the passive safety front, the Tang L is engineered to meet five-star global safety standards.

Market Performance and Reception

Despite commanding widespread industry attention at launch thanks to its headline-grabbing specifications, the Tang L's commercial performance has experienced a notable cooldown. Between April and December 2025, monthly retail deliveries tapered from 5,229 units to 3,338 units, dropping further into early 2026 with 601, 493, and 945 units recorded across January, February, and March respectively. In May 2026, sales stood at 616 units. Over the past twelve-month cycle, cumulative sales reached 20,655 units for the Tang L DM and 14,767 units for the Tang L EV.

Industry analysts note that while the Tang L showcases BYD's latest technological tour de force, it has yet to replicate the runaway market success previously enjoyed by the Han and Tang nameplates in the premium segment. From user and media verdicts, the vehicle has garnered widespread acclaim for its megawatt flash charging, four-figure horsepower output, DiSus-C active suspension, and DiLink 150 cockpit ecosystem; road tests consistently highlight its exceptional absorption of road imperfections, rivalling the ride comfort of luxury contenders. Conversely, reviewers have pointed out minor ergonomic oversights, such as the omission of retaining clips in the third-row cup holders. Overall, anchored by the technical triad of "Super e-Platform + 5th-gen DM + God's Eye ADAS + DiSus-C chassis", the Tang L effectively underlines BYD's flagship engineering prowess in the RM220,000—RM290,000 mid-to-large SUV arena through blistering power, ultra-fast charging, and a lavish seven-seater footprint, even as its sales trajectory mirrors the broader challenges Chinese carmakers face when ascending upmarket.
