The BYD Seagull is an all-electric city car under BYD's Ocean Series, positioned as an urban runabout and a second household car. Underpinned by BYD's e-Platform 3.0, the EV made its global premiere at the Auto Shanghai in April 2023 and officially hit the market in May of the same year. By June 2025, just 27 months post-launch, cumulative sales of the Seagull breached the 1,000,000-unit milestone, making it the quickest A00-segment EV globally to achieve this feat. Official retail prices have steadily become more accessible, with the 2025 Vitality Edition once entering the RM50,000 bracket via a limited-time promotional price of RM56,800; the four variants for the 2026 model year are priced from RM69,900 to RM85,900, with the 405km Flying Edition and 305km Freedom Edition offering an optional LiDAR suite, priced at RM97,900 and RM90,900 respectively, delivering upgraded kit at competitive pricing.

Design Language

The Seagull adopts BYD's "Ocean Aesthetics" design philosophy, featuring a sharp, chic, and dynamic silhouette that exudes a distinct sense of sportiness and tech appeal. The front fascia features a blanked-off grille paired with angular LED headlamp clusters, where U-shaped daytime running lights outline the Seagull's signature "healing smile", working alongside parallel-line DRLs and cornering indicators to create a distinctive lighting signature. Along the flanks, a floating roof design blends with a rising beltline to evoke the swooping posture of a seagull in flight, riding on 16-inch Ice Crystal Dynamic alloy wheels. It filters out minor road imperfections competently on straight stretches while offering respectable lateral stability around bends. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, delivering progressive pedal feel with minimal front-end dive under hard braking. A tight turning radius of just 4.95 metres, combined with electric power steering (EPS), ensures effortless manoeuvrability and parkability through narrow urban streets and multi-storey car parks. The Vitality Edition rides on 165/65 R15 tyres, while the Freedom Edition upwards upgrades to wider 175/55 R16 rubber for improved road grip.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the Seagull features a standard dual-screen layout with a digital instrument cluster and a floating infotainment touchscreen. Standard variants get a 7-inch instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch rotatable floating display running the DiLink intelligent infotainment system; high-spec 2026 models step up to an 8.8-inch digital cluster and a 12.8-inch DiLink floating touchscreen powered by the upgraded DiLink 150 cockpit architecture. The central screen supports voice control ("Hi BYD") for managing navigation, media playback, and air-conditioning settings. For driving aids, the EV incorporates BYD's "God's Eye" intelligent driving system (DiPilot). Total sales in 2025 alone hit 529,500 units, cementing its reign at the top of the A00-segment EV sales charts. Backed by accessible entry pricing, solid safety standards, and segment-first smart features, the Seagull has consistently reset value benchmarks for small electric runabouts, retaining the annual A00-segment sales crown in both 2023 and 2024 while clinching monthly best-seller honours 21 times. Customer reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with praise singled out for its throttle response, generous equipment levels, clever packaging, and rock-bottom running costs; minor brickbats are primarily directed at the compact default boot space, average cabin sound insulation at speed, and minimal dealer discounts. On the global stage, the hatchback has made inroads into Europe, Southeast Asia, and other key export markets badged as the "Seagull" or "Seagull Surf", with indicative starting prices around RM163,000, further expanding BYD's international footprint.
