2026-10-04 18:50:00

Model Overview

The BMW iX1 is a compact all-electric SUV under the BMW Group, developed on the third-generation BMW X1 (U11) platform and locally built by BMW Brilliance. As an integral member of BMW's "i" all-electric lineup, the iX1 debuted in China in 2023, offering a long-wheelbase version deeply tailored specifically for the Chinese market. On 21 January 2026, the 2026 BMW iX1 was officially launched. The updated range comprises 4 variants, with official retail prices spanning between RM228,000 and RM268,000. Compared to the 2025 model, the 2026 model sees a significant price drop for its entry variant, offering a notably stronger value proposition. Positioned as a premium compact all-electric SUV, its key rivals include segment contenders such as the Audi Q4 e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQA.

Design Language

The 2026 BMW iX1 retains the signature design DNA of the BMW X family. The front fascia features the iconic large, closed kidney grille accented with diamond-patterned or chrome triangular inserts, edged with refined chrome garnishes to deliver a premium yet distinctly electrified aesthetic. The front bumper adopts a three-tier air intake arrangement, flanked by L-shaped air curtains that complement the central silver skid plate. The headlamp assemblies feature newly styled twin L-shaped LED Angel Eyes headlights incorporating integrated daytime running lights (DRLs) and dynamic sequential turn indicators.

The side profile showcases clean, flowing lines equipped with semi-flush door handles to improve aerodynamic efficiency. At the rear, it features sculpted 3D L-shaped LED tail lamp clusters, complemented by a silver skid plate on the rear bumper. The SUV measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height, riding on a 2,802 mm wheelbase. This 2,802 mm wheelbase stands out among compact SUVs, having been extended specifically for the Chinese market. For 2026, fresh paint options such as Brooklyn Grey, Portimao Blue, and Fire Red have been added. The vehicle continues to offer two exterior styling themes: the X Design Package and the M Sport Shadowline Package. The M Sport Shadowline Package adds Individual high-gloss black aluminium roof rails, gloss black side mirror caps, and darkened headlamp trim.

Inside, the cabin features a black base theme highlighted by Coral Red contrast stitching and decorative trim panels, with three interior colour options available. The dashboard is fitted with a curved dual-screen display combining a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Gear selection is operated via a minimalist toggle-style electronic gear selector.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 BMW iX1 is available with two powertrain options:

  • eDrive25L: Powered by a front-mounted single electrically excited synchronous motor producing a maximum output of 150 kW (204 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. The century sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is completed in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h.

  • xDrive30L: Driven by dual front and rear electrically excited synchronous motors, generating a combined system output of 230 kW (313 PS) and 494 Nm of torque. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes just 5.7 seconds, with top speed rated at 180 km/h.

Across the board, power is supplied by a 66.5 kWh ternary lithium battery pack (utilising cells supplied by EVE Power). On the CLTC cycle, the single-motor eDrive25L delivers a driving range of up to 510 km, while the dual-motor AWD xDrive30L delivers 450 km due to higher energy consumption. For DC fast charging, a 10% to 80% state of charge takes approximately 32 minutes. A battery pre-conditioning system is fitted as standard across the range.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

The BMW iX1 rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The front suspension incorporates lightweight aluminium components, shedding roughly three kilograms over its predecessor. The steering geometry has been recalibrated, with the caster angle increased by around 15% over the previous X1 to enhance steering feedback and high-speed directional stability. Both the front and rear axles are equipped with anti-roll bars, a rarity among entry-level luxury offerings in this segment. The chassis tuning retains BMW’s hallmark driving dynamics, effectively smoothing out minor road imperfections while keeping body roll well-checked through aggressive cornering. The xDrive30L variant features an all-wheel-drive system capable of redistributing torque within 0.1 seconds. Motoring reviewers note that despite entering the electric era, the iX1 continues to deliver BMW’s signature sharp steering precision and planted, solid chassis feel.

Cabin and Features

In terms of in-car technology, the 2026 BMW iX1 runs on the BMW iDrive 9 operating system. The headline upgrade for the 2026 model year is the addition of standard 5G network connectivity across all variants, significantly boosting data transfer speeds and in-car connected responsiveness over the previous 4G setup. The system also supports wireless Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

In terms of standard equipment, the 2026 range includes: front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, a front-facing monocular sensing camera, 12 ultrasonic sensors, cruise control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Auto Parking Assist, Reversing Assistant, a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start, remote engine start, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and adaptive LED headlights with auto high-beam. Compared to the 2025 model year, the 2026 lineup gains multiple advanced driver-assist features as standard equipment.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

On the safety front, the BMW iX1 comes standard with front dual airbags, front side airbags, as well as front and rear curtain airbags. It also features a tyre pressure monitoring system, seatbelt reminders, and a driver fatigue alert system. Active safety features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard fitment.

For driver assistance, the 2026 BMW iX1 comes equipped with a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system, encompassing functions like Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Reversing Assistant, and Lane Centring Assist. The hardware suite relies on a single front-facing camera and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Engaging the system is straightforward via a dedicated steering wheel button on the left spoke.

Market Performance and Reception

The BMW iX1 has experienced relatively subdued market performance in China. Total sales for the entire year of 2025 stood at 14,088 units, translating to an average monthly volume of under 1,200 units. In July 2025, monthly sales dipped to just 882 units, marking a 51.83% year-on-year drop. In Q1 2026, combined insurance registrations for BMW's trio of EVs—the i3, i5, and iX1—totalled under 5,000 units. With sales falling short of expectations, BMW has scheduled to end local production of the iX1 in China by July 2026. In showrooms, heavily discounted on-the-road prices for the iX1 have retreated to the RM180,000 bracket.

Motoring press consensus notes that the iX1 maintains BMW's engaging driving dynamics and composed ride quality, while the extended 2,802 mm wheelbase yields generous rear passenger legroom. The 2026 update adopts an aggressive "lower price, higher spec" approach—slashing the base price to RM228,000 while making 5G connectivity and comprehensive ADAS standard—substantially boosting its value quotient. Nevertheless, within China's cut-throat EV landscape, the iX1’s brand pricing power and digital tech experience still lag behind domestic smart EV contenders, ultimately dampening its sales momentum. Serving as an important foray for BMW's electrification in the compact crossover realm, the iX1 nonetheless leaves its own distinct mark on the premium compact EV segment through its blend of "stretched cabin roominess and authentic BMW driving DNA".
