The BMW M2 is a high-performance sports coupe crafted by BMW Group’s M division (BMW M GmbH) based on the 2 Series Coupe, serving as the entry-level offering in the M Power stable. The second-generation M2 (chassis code G87) made its global debut in October 2022 as a headline model celebrating the 50th anniversary of the BMW M brand. Upholding BMW M’s pure rear-wheel-drive driving dynamics, the M2 has been hailed as the "ultimate guardian of pure driving pleasure". The M2 currently offered in the domestic market is the 2025 Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) facelift, powered by an upgraded S58 powerplant. In February 2025, the facelifted M2 went on sale in the Taiwanese market, with both automatic and manual variants priced at RM3,750,000; over in Mainland China, the 2025 M2 CS was launched at the August 2025 Chengdu Motor Show, with prices starting from RM808,000 and limited to 200 units. Furthermore, BMW rolled out its first-ever all-wheel-drive iteration, the M2 xDrive, in June 2026.

Design Language
The second-generation M2 sports a distinct design language compared to the standard 2 Series. Up front, it features frameless, rectangular, right-angled trapezoidal kidney grilles with horizontal louvres, flanked by sleek headlamp clusters housing hook-shaped LED daytime running lights. The front bumper boasts bold, three-section squared-off air intakes, which, paired with the widened stance, accentuate its aggressive, track-ready aesthetic. Along the flanks, it retains the classic compact proportions of the 2 Series, complemented by flush-fitting door handles for a sleeker look. Flared wheel arches, large alloy wheels, and red brake callipers underline its muscular presence. At the rear, quad exhaust tailpipes and a prominent diffuser complete the setup. In terms of dimensions, the car measures 4,580–4,587 mm in length, 1,887 mm in width, and 1,395–1,403 mm in height, with a 2,747–2,749 mm wheelbase. A carbon-fibre roof is available as an option, shaving off around 6 kg. Inside, the M2 adopts BMW's latest cockpit design, featuring the BMW Curved Display that combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The M-specific flat-bottom steering wheel comes with a red 12 o'clock centre marker and red M buttons. The M Sport seats offer superb lateral support. Vernasca leather upholstery comes standard, with Merino leather available as an option.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the bonnet, the BMW M2 houses the acclaimed S58 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbocharged petrol engine, derived from the M3/M4 and given a bespoke tune. Following the 2025 LCI update, maximum output was bumped from 460 hp to 480 hp, with peak torque rated at 600 Nm. The 2025 M2 CS variant takes performance a step further, pushing out 530 hp (390 kW). Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox and an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. As standard, power is routed to the rear wheels (RWD); however, the M2 xDrive introduced in June 2026 marks the first time an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system has been fitted to the M2. In terms of acceleration, the RWD automatic completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 3.8–4.0 seconds; the manual variant takes around 4.5 seconds; and the AWD M2 xDrive cuts this sprint time down to 3.7 seconds (3.4 seconds with a 1-foot rollout). Top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h, which can be raised to 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Chassis and Handling
The M2 rides on a front double-joint spring strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, utilising extensive aluminium components in the control arms to reduce unsprung mass. Its chassis shares core hardware with the M3/M4, effectively making it a scaled-down M3 beneath the skin. Standard dynamic hardware includes Adaptive M suspension (with electronically controlled dampers), Variable Sport Steering, and an Active M Differential on the rear axle. The M Traction Control system offers multi-stage adjustment, allowing drivers to fine-tune rear-wheel slip via the M Setup menu. A 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and wide track widths deliver the brand’s quintessential M handling characteristics. Stopping power is provided by six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear.
Cabin and Equipment
Inside, the M2 runs on the BMW Operating System 8.5. The infotainment suite supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, alongside a standard Head-Up Display (HUD) and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. For seating, the front M Sport seats feature multi-way electric adjustment. The rear accommodates a 2+2 layout, best suited for children or short jaunts given the compact space. Boot space is rated at 390 litres. Convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and Comfort Access keyless entry.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the M2 comes standard with driver/front passenger airbags, front side airbags, and curtain airbags. Active safety is handled by a Level 2 driving assistance suite, incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Front and Rear Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Driver Attention Alert. The car also features a 360-degree surround-view camera and automated Parking Assistant.
Market Performance and Reception
The BMW M2 stands as one of the most coveted high-performance sports coupes worldwide. In 2024, the G87 M2 emerged as the best-selling M Power model, recording a year-on-year sales jump of 64%. In 2025, the M2 Coupe continued its reign as the M division's top-selling high-performance M Power vehicle. In the first quarter of 2026, the M2 ranked second among all M models in South Korea with 112 units delivered. The M2's stellar appeal lies in its potent S58 engine, agile rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and the unadulterated driving thrill delivered by its relatively compact footprint. Serving as the entry point into the BMW M Power family, the M2's dual persona—a track-ready weapon on weekends and a practical daily driver during the week—continues to solidify its benchmark status in the high-performance sports coupe segment.
