Model Overview

The BAIC BJEV EU5 is a C-segment fully electric sedan introduced by BAIC Motor's electric division, BAIC BJEV, at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. Positioned as a "New Paradigm for Artificial Intelligence Sedans", it served as the pioneer production model under BAIC BJEV's "Darwin System", spearheading the brand's strategic transition from volume-driven growth to quality-focused development. On 15 August 2018, the EU5 was officially launched in North China, offering four variants across two range specifications—R500 and R550—with official retail prices from RM220,650 to RM252,650 and subsidised nationwide prices between RM129,900 and RM161,900. In July 2020, following the consolidation of BAIC BJEV into the BEIJING brand, the updated model adopted the new "BEIJING" emblem and was renamed BEIJING-EU5. The lineup subsequently expanded to include derivatives such as the EU5 PLUS, an e-hailing edition, and the EU5 Hongtu Edition launched in 2025, forming a comprehensive portfolio catering to both private retail buyers and commercial fleet operators.
Design Language
Visually, the EU5 adopts BAIC's signature family design ethos. Up front, it sports the closed-off grille typical of EVs, highlighted by silver chrome accents, a staggered mesh-like texture, and dot-matrix faux side intakes that lend a tech-forward, refined look. Its most striking visual cue is the pair of prominent standalone C-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) flanked on either side, which deliver high distinctiveness alongside "twin-trident" outline light bars for a commanding road presence. Distinct wave-like bonnet creases flow towards both front wings, adding substantial visual muscle. In profile, a rising shoulder line connects the bumper to the front wing, pairing with a sweeping fastback roofline to create a dynamic, four-door coupe-like stance. At the rear, an inverted boot lid design is topped with an integrated ducktail spoiler, flanked by C-shaped trim elements that mirror the front DRL signature. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,650 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,510 mm tall (height raised to 1,520 mm from the 2020 model year onward), with a 2,670 mm wheelbase, making it notably broad for a compact sedan. Inside, the cabin blends soft-touch trimmings and faux wood finishes to deliver an upscale ambience, anchored by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9.0-inch floating central touchscreen.
Powertrain and Performance
Powering the EU5 is an in-house developed third-generation permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a BorgWarner single-speed reducer, generating 160 kW (218 PS) and 300 Nm of torque—figures that lead its class among compact EVs. The official 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.8 seconds, with 0–50 km/h taking just 3.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 km/h. At the core of the powertrain is the EMD 3.0 intelligent electronic control system, which monitors telemetry across 260 onboard components to handle smart data analysis, intelligent power distribution, and dynamic drive calibration. Compared to its first-generation predecessor, EMD 3.0 is 46.5% more compact, 40% lighter, and achieves an energy efficiency rating of 98.5%. Energy is supplied by CATL ternary lithium-ion battery packs: 53.6 kWh with a 151 Wh/kg energy density on the R500, upgraded to 60.2 kWh with over 160.8 Wh/kg on the R550 and R600. Rated driving ranges stand at an NEDC-rated 416 km (520 km at constant cruising speed) for the R500, 460 km (570 km constant-speed) for the R550, and up to 501 km for the later R600. DC fast charging takes 30 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80% SoC, while AC standard charging takes between 8.5 and 10 hours depending on the trim.
Chassis and Handling
Chassis hardware varies across the lineup. The R500 utilises a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup calibrated primarily for ride comfort, effectively damping out minor road chatter. The R550 steps up to fully independent suspension with a front MacPherson and rear multi-link setup, enhancing high-speed stability and cornering composure without sacrificing ride quality. With the battery pack mounted flat beneath the floorpan, the lowered centre of gravity ensures planted road manners. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that is light at parking speeds and weights up progressively as velocity climbs. Stopping power comes from front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The regenerative braking system features three selectable levels; the most aggressive B3 mode offers pronounced deceleration, enabling single-pedal driving to maximise range. Two drive modes are available—Sport and ECO—with Sport sharpening throttle response while largely dialling back regenerative drag.
Cabin and Equipment
The EU5's digital cockpit is anchored by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9.0-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, featuring seamless dual-screen integration and a "three-finger gesture" transfer function that lets drivers swipe navigation, media, and telephony info straight onto the cluster to keep eyes on the road. Running the i-Link 2.0 telematics platform, it integrates a Baidu DuerOS-powered conversational voice assistant capable of processing natural speech and multi-step voice prompts (such as "find a Sichuan restaurant averaging RM200 per pax" or "switch on the air-cond and turn off the radio") with prompt response times. Connected features include voice-guided navigation with charging network route planning, in-car Wi-Fi, digital concierge, Send2Car destination sharing, and in-car digital payments. The vehicle software supports Over-The-Air (OTA) updates via a dedicated gateway. Standard comfort appointments across the range include keyless entry with push-start button, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, and a PM2.5 air purifier, while range-topping variants gain heated, ventilated, and six-way power-adjustable front seats.
Safety and Driver Assistance
In terms of safety, the EU5's body shell incorporates high-strength and hot-stamped steel, securing a four-star crash-test rating for robust baseline protection. Passive safety kit includes front and front-side airbags across the range, with range-toppers adding full-length curtain airbags. Active safety systems across all variants encompass Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Hill-Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Auto Brake Hold. For Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the higher-spec R550 features a 10-function ADAS suite, including Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (with Stop & Go capability), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian detection), Blind Spot Detection (BSD covering a 3 m × 3 m rear zone), and a 360-degree surround-view camera. The adaptive cruise control automatically manages pacing and distance control within the lane, significantly reducing driver fatigue on long-distance highway hauls.
Market Performance and Reception
The EU5 has long been a core sales pillar within BAIC BJEV's portfolio. Following its debut, the saloon gained decent traction among private buyers thanks to its 400+ km range, the EMD 3.0 control unit, and an accessible entry price from RM129,900 post-subsidy. However, its true volume breakthrough came in the commercial fleet sector. In March 2019, BAIC BJEV delivered 10,000 units of the EU5 to Jingju New Energy for e-hailing operations. Bolstered by low running costs and reliable real-world range, the EU5 quickly became a dominant fixture on China's e-hailing landscape, capturing significant market share in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Nonetheless, as competitive rivals like the BYD Qin EV and GAC AION S introduced comprehensive range and tech upgrades, alongside the tapering of national EV subsidies, the EU5 saw its private retail market share squeezed. Subsequent rollouts such as the EU5 PLUS and Hongtu Edition (offering 401 km CLTC range and priced between RM151,900 and RM153,900) sustained the model line, though market buzz waned compared to its peak years. From an owner's perspective, the EU5 is widely commended for its dependable real-world range accuracy, the robustness of its EMD 3.0 electrical architecture, and low operational costs. Within the commercial e-hailing sector in particular, its proven durability and generous warranty terms (8-year/150,000-km battery warranty and 3-year/120,000-km vehicle warranty) earned high marks from fleet operators. All told, as the debut model of BAIC's "Darwin System", the BAIC BJEV EU5 was among the earliest in 2018 to bring AI-driven features to the mainstream family EV segment. Built on the three pillars of EMD 3.0 management, Baidu DuerOS voice tech, and ADAS capabilities, it cemented BAIC BJEV's initial footprint in the intelligent EV space while establishing enduring fleet-scale recognition across the wider mobility market.
